Sudden Engine Stoppage investigation 582UL Rotax

08/23/24.. I'm considering the Rotax 582 for my Challenger ll CWS. I'm trying to learn how to take good care of a 582. Your U-tube presentation was a big help since I have heard the problem you discussed is most important to stay aware of. I have flown rotax 447 and 503 twenty years with very little problems since I'm always doing maintenance a head of schedule. I look forward to your other vides. Thanks.

Inverted engine filling instructions : First remove the stem that is inside the engines RV oil bottle & discard it. The bubbles will go to the top anyway & by doing this, there is no incorrect way to route the oil lines. Also I have seen these engines pump the oil in different directions. I don't know how thats possible but I saw it. Fill an old gear oil bottle that has a nipple with 30W motor oil. If your using a small amount of RV oil then fill it with your Premix oil. They don't come from Rotax with Premix oil in them. Remove the oil line from the bottle that runs down between the cylinders. Insert the oil bottle nipple into the line. Squeeze without stopping until the oil enters the bottle from the other oil line. . Top off the RV oil bottle. Remove the 6mm bolt on the side of the engine just above the water pump cover to get the air out. Reinstall the bolt. Rotax Rick

The whole point of this video is to highlight a engine maintenance error that had occurred. The 582 Rotax Line Maintenance Manual omitted the correct rotary filling procedure for inverted engine installations. Although this video is viewable by the public, it was primarily produced for Transport Canada, The Transportation Safety Board and Rotax for potential reimbursement due to the error in their publication. Hi Neil, your very welcome. I published a video titled “Rotax 582 oil change with spark plugs down” a couple of years ago on this same channel. It deals with the proper procedure to purge the air while refilling the rotary oil gear case. Then by request I published another on how to drain the rotary oil on an inverted engine.

Hi John. Fantastic informative videos you make. May I ask a question. I have a 582 blue top, Once the engine has been ran and stopped I’m getting oil dripping from the air filter and once the air filter is removed I can see it’s mainly from the rear carb. The aircraft is a tail dragger so the engine is not level when not flying. It does not have an auto lube bottle as I pre mix the fuel. The rear carb slider is slightly more open than the front one when the throttle is at idle. I’m going to set these up like in your other video. Could this be the cause or shall I be looking elsewhere for the problem. Many thanks. Damion from the UK.

Perhaps the mechanical pencil carb sync will cure the issue. I’ll make a video on a diy carb sync stick soon.

I wonder if people sieze these things cause they don't know how to jet them or they run them too lean. Better to loose some power and run them rich. I ran a 583 on my sled in the mountains out west for years no prob by paying attention to my jetting.

We have EGt gauges. I doubt a sled engine has them. By monitoring egts we know if the engine is running lean or rich

The engine would need to be completely dismantled and each component inspected. Only then am I able to determine what components are reusable or must be replaced to prepare the engine for another potential 300 hours of flight.

Hello thankyou for an uninformative video ,,I have a 582 blue top with 600hrs on it,,does the crank shaft have a max Hr limit on it please if you know the answer?

Thank you for your kind comment. I recommend you you obey government aviation regulations where you operate the aircraft. I am not aware of a published maximum hour limit past 300 hours, however I've serviced 582 engines with up to 600 hours on them. Rotax recommends crankshaft replacement every 300 hour and also every 5 years the engine the engine be dismantled, inspected and resealed on aircraft engines. I would recommend a complete engine inspection now with replacement of any necessary components. Properly completed this 582 engine should then be expected to run for the next 300 hours..

This engine it’s a pain very costly high maintenance.. a few h in the air litle fun ?? You put it in the shop and open the valet again and again …not to mention the sound it’s terrible loud 2 cycle it sucks. Before 300 h. Must rebuild again. Just not good motor

It was the installers fault. The owner installed the engine in an orientation not certified by Rotax. If you don't know what you are doing don't do anything!

@@chippyjohn1this is untrue, yhe manuals give instructions and specifications for both plugs-up and plugs-down orientation. The “full” manual and installation manual give instructions for filling the system in both orientations. However the “light “ maintenance manual, the one actually shipped with the engine, omitted the extra step required for inverted installations.
