Situated on New Zealand's north island, Rotorua is popular for its geothermal activity and has many naturally occurring hot pools in the region.
There is a magnitude of things to do in Rotorua, most of them you have to pay for, I would like to point out 2 locations where you can view some geothermal activity absolutely free!
First up is kuirau park, right in the heart of Rotorua, this is New Zealand’s only geothermal public park, here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a crater lake, mud pools, hot springs, bbq's and children's playground, you will also find free thermal foot baths here, just remember it is foot baths and not recommended for bathing.
Then there is Sulfur Point, just behind the Government Gardens and Rotorua museum out on Queens drive, we found this spot particularly smelly due to the sulfur vents in the area, there is a path that follows the lake shore and goes right through an active geothermal area.
