On the one, admitting one's own limitations and staying humble in one ability and want for continuing improvement in one craft is good. But on the other hand, going full "self-deprecation" closer to self-loathing isn't healthy for one's health and creative out put. Also putting yourself down to elevate another's work is a disservice to yourself, you gotta be nice to ya self, ya hear?
@bored_person3 жыл бұрын
He may excel in certain areas, but he's not wrong when he says his skills are limited. He's simply able to compensate for them using clever techniques, rather than revealing them by attempting things he's not good at.

You know, as a person who's already aware of this sort of animation technique, I could actually tell it was 3d rotoscoped, BUT- It looks amazing, has a really neat effect, you still did all the work yourself, I loved it! If I remember, they did the sort of ... opposite of this in the Evangelion Rebuild films, with the Evas. where they did super sketchy animation first, then draped 3d animation over that. That second animation, woah----- Nostalgia meltdown in my brain. It shows that you can do the 3d rotoscoping, and it's still got that soul that makes your animations lively, since you can add those dynamic lights and shadows to things, the 80s glowyness, the cel-shaded look, etc. I've always been immensely impressed with your animation work, waaay back to the Pharaoh Otaking/Maki arcade game mockup, and it's cool to see a bit into your process and everything!
@DollarTaco10 жыл бұрын

I actually had this idea in my head years ago, and was like... "Wait, what if someone were to draw lines over 3d animation as a cheat sheet to create good looking animation, then it might just bring back the old disney movies traditional style animation to look like a bunch of people worked on it" Apparently my wish came true and found this, it's possible. I'm so using this technique to create one of my disney/fleischer studios/don bluth inspired animation. Old traditional animation has inspired me such as the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, etc. It was so beautiful and this technique might bring that style back, one problem is, is that you have to make the 3d animation move like a cartoon would, like all bouncy, exaggerated neck stretches/fourth wall breaks, etc.
@TheSovjetCat9 жыл бұрын
I think this rotoscoping might have been in pipelines for the last couple years, but can you imagine animtors used to achieve this effect BY HAND decades ago? I really like this technique, makes me look in hindsight "Huh, yeah I figured that almost looked 3D, this makes sense". This stuff is starting to show ingames too. There's been some interesting rendering from Japanese fighting games lately.
@ThatEccentricguy9 жыл бұрын
TheSovjetCat I also think a similar technique was used by Disney for Paperman and Feast. They used some form of motion tracking and rotoscope to combine 3D with hand drawn animation.
@mematron9 жыл бұрын
TheSovjetCat Disney used rotoscoping in Snow White. It's been around longer than any of us has been be alive. It was invented in 1915 by Max Fleischer.
@Razgriz_019 жыл бұрын
TheSovjetCat The problem with rotoscoping is the movements look weird.not saying that its a bad thing, but it gives a weird uncanny look to it.
@mematron9 жыл бұрын
that1dude0092 In Snow White Disney animators had to remove a few frames from from Snow White and the Prince because the animation was better than the Dwarves. I think for this project it looks fine because it's consistent enough for the style. When all else fails make it all the same way. That way mistakes are harder to detect.
@FireSpark10 жыл бұрын
I love the "and here's my more ambitious attempt that failed" line, prompting to wrack my brain trying to figure out _what the hell he was talking about_. I would watch an entire series with that level of animating without batting an eye. Assuming there was some decent action and story to go along with it. Keep on striving dude, but don't knock yourself too hard. This is awesome work.

Dimitri Bitu I think in both examples, Beauty and the Beast and Futurama, it was pure CGI without any rotoscoping at all. The 3D elements in Futurama were rendered using that cel shading technique in order to get the cartoon look.

You know, the shading (and overall coloring) is, ironically, the only area that I'm not completely sold on. I know you love shading, so do I, in fact, but yours is extremely contrasty, to the point that even in the 80s (=the most shading-happy era that I know of) they usually didn't exaggerate the contrast between the different shading tones as much as you do. I know some promotional art did this, so, in a way, this kind of looks like animated promotional art and it's gorgeous to look at, but somehow really weird at the same time. Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing. Anyway, it still looks completely fucking awesome and WHAT DO YOU MEAN "FAILED", I'd totally watch a series with that kind of detail as that more ambitious second attempt... so I wish you the best of luck. This is great.
