A quick update for you! The repair lasted for 7 seven years, I have now replaced a fair bit of timber with new, looks good and will hopefully last even longer!

I replace too many sash and sills that have been "repaired" by using fillers and /or epoxy for this to be a true fix. Folks if you want it done right replace the rotted wood completely if not you have only prolonged the inevitable.. 26 years doing this work.

I'm amazed by the "Only full replacement is good" comments. Nothing is permanent. I use filler to fix frames and they hold for few years if done correctly. Its important to see if the cause of the initial problem is fixed. Be it deteriorated paint or leaking roof or flashing. Event if you have to redo repair every three years its still cheaper than replacing windows every 10. Great video.

Good job. I have used this very same method and the same products. What I can say is that a better, easier and longer lasting repair can be achieved using the flexible epoxy products made by Repair Care International. RCI method cuts back to sound timber, applies a two-part liquid that soaks into the good timber and creates a perfect bond with the filler. The RCI filler does not sag and you can use scraps of perspex as formers to create perfectly flat surfaces. Both methods work but RCI will last the longest.

I've been using plastic filler on rotting window frames for forty years. Where the window doesn't get direct sunlight, a good repair can last for several decades as long as the paintwork's kept in good condition. Where the window gets sun , the continual expansion and contraction will usually cause a crack to open between filler and wood after a few years ( the sun will also cause the paint film to fail for the same reason ) So maintenance under these conditions will need to be more often and I invested in proper manufacturer. Dako Windows.

About six years ago, I had dry-rot on a 4x6 beam of my patio cover that's exposed to the rain & water running off of the cover. There is a metal drip-edge. I cleaned it out, but didn't treat it. I used bondo as a filler, sanded & painted. No cracks or weakening so far. Still solid. I check it periodically & paint it every couple of years. It helps to live in a fairly dry climate like So. Calif. Currently (Nov.'12) doing the same thing to repair termite damage on the rafter tails.

I have a similar situation where I need to build a "form" before placing the filler. I had thought about using vegetable oil to keep the filler from attaching to the form, but was concerned the oil might react with the filler. Apparently, you did not have a problem.

Do you need to clean some of the rotten wood before applying the first product?
@fungames243 жыл бұрын
You should. The rot isn't rot. It's fungi that eat the wood. If you don't reduce their population, they might finish eating the rest of the wood.

Doesn’t the secret to a long-lasting repair include solving the water problem? Somewhere above the post there is a place where water enters. Seal that and the rotted wood repair should last a very long time.

@Iazzaboyce8 жыл бұрын
Gordon p` Car body filler is cheaper and it works just as well. These repairs have to be done a bit at a time. It's vital to remove all decayed wood back to sound timber with a wood chisel. Then apply wood preserver. Shape new wood and fit with screws to build up original profiles. Apply wood preserver. Apply wood primer. Fill with two part wood filler sand and fill again. Apply wood primer. Now ready for paint finish. Done properly you will never know and it will last for years.

As I said before, not going to find a carpenter to do that, they would remove the entire window and replace whatever needs to be replaced and leave you with a whopping large bill...just saying
@whitacrebespoke7 жыл бұрын
Carolyn Gibbs yes you will, I make lots of windows and doors but I also do lots of restoration on listed properties where you are not allowed to remove the original unless they are beyond repair. This filler type repair is usually unacceptable in my line of work. Letting new timber in really is the only acceptable method as this filler and cement that I often find used too traps moisture and can cause a total failure.

After all this time effort and money it will crack and fall out next year. I replace patched windows nearly everyday. The different type of materials heat and cool at different rates which causes cracking even it is patched with timber as its density is different to the original timber.

Can you please either recommend a method, video or even upload your own video on how you would fix this as I have this exact problem on the bay window of my cottage!
@fungames243 жыл бұрын
@@mattshepherd772 His name is refit windows. Ask him for a quote. Even better, try filler yourself then you will know if it's any good. It might work better than window sellers claim. I have patches of various ages. I have not noticed any failures in them. They will fail if the wood the filler is bonded to gets wet. Water is quite insidious and will get in from the smallest openings.

It would have worked without cracking if you had cut a narrow channel /i\ from high point of outer frame to window to allow for expansion.

well tried but amateur repair with wrong product - the wood will expand and shrink and the two part woodfill will eventually go hard, brittle and crack. prob get two years max. Never use wood hardener on rot, always cut/drill out all rot (like a dentist would with your teeth!) and then either splice in wood correctly of use flexible resin system such as RepairCare. don't do what this fella has done!
