A word to the wise to American viewers; notice how the train starts out on existing conventional rail -- using the exact same electrical system that Metra Electric uses in the Chicago area (which was originally installed by engineers from the Netherlands) in the city and inner suburbs, then on reaching the outer suburbs transitioning to dedicated high speed track operating at a higher voltage. The locomotives can run on either system, both the 1500V DC commuter rail current or 3000V as it is on the terminal trackage on the Antwerp end, and the 25000 volts AC of the dedicated high speed line in between. This is how you incrementally upgrade to faster rail. (1500v DC can go to about 100mph and that's it; if it's upgraded to 3000 as has happened in Belgium, then maybe 125, and beyond that you need the higher voltage AC)
@TheAminoamigo5 жыл бұрын
But of course there are those who will say "but high-speed rail is so expensive to build!" quietly glossing over the fact that the american highway system is the most expensive infrastructure project of all time at ~0.5 trillion dollars

A word to the wise European viewers. Notice the lack of multi mile-long freight trains. That's because in Europe the train system is targeted towards passengers, not freight. As such they transport freight much less efficiently. Which is good because the USA is far more spread out then much of Europe. Why spend a day(s) on a train when a flight is a fraction of the time?
@cg9865 жыл бұрын
@@TheOwenMajor Separate track for that. Betuwelijn. And on regular tracks most cargo usually goes at night.
@TheOwenMajor5 жыл бұрын
@@cg986 I was being partially satirical. My point being that I hate stuck up Euro rail fans who think the USA has a poor rail system. You can look at the data, Western Europe simply transports freight less efficiently. You are far more dependent on your road system then the USA is to move goods.

I would suggest using the widest lens angle possible, things tend to look slow when zoomed in. It's also better in fighting camera shake. Also use manual focus it's all at infinity anyway. And a wide aperture lens tend to 'remove' the crud on the windshield. And a fixed manual exposure would be nice too but in that case you would need to crank up the exposure in tunnels which might be problematic if the lens is wide open to begin with.

@@iZipTiedMyPenisToABrick well the size is certainly a factor, more like a minor factor that positively influences major factors like legal issues concerning properties, bureaucrazy, planning, environmental issues and so on. Did you know that construction companies in Germany make tons of money just for placing signs? One major factor and one example since 15 years in Germany that construction times have doubled. Another example are directives forcing planners to choose the cheapest offer, not considering quality and experience. The dutch just make so many things so much better.

+High Speed Rail America Club The reason there is no high-speed in the US is because there is little market for it. The airliner killed off long-distance trains, and the car killed off short-distance and the interurbans. When planes die, you might see some HSR again.
@AmericanRailClub8 жыл бұрын
Part of that is true, but there's a deeper story to it. The market at the moment is switching the other way towards trains. If you watch our documentary, The American Train, you can see a historian's and business leader's take on the subject.

gsarjos That is the kind of train travel I can get behind, high-speed in clusters of centres, like the Texas Triangle and whatever the others are called, and moderate at best speed between the centres, certainly not as slow as now, where a train is lucky to get over 60mph, but 80, 90, and 100 isn't unachievable outside of the troublesome mountain passes.

Those poles next to the track, carrying the powerlines, are usually around 70 meters apart. The time it takes to from one pole to the next is definitively faster than 1 second. Everyone can see that. And 70 meters/second already translates to 252 km/h, so the train is driving faster than that. I timed the time it took to pass 10 poles (700 meters) and that was only ~8 seconds. That would mean the train would actually ride at a speed of 87 meters/second which is 313 km/h. Although I might've made some timing errors, still; the speed will still be around the stated 300 km/h. But absolutely above 252 km/h.
