I had four rough collies in my life, from birth to my mid-20s. I really loved those dogs. The first, Sandy, threw a fit when I was first brought home from the hospital and put in a crib, so my father scooped me up and laid me on the floor. Sandy sniffed on and licked me a bit - and then laid down beside me with her front feet crossed contentedly as if to say “I like your new puppy.”

The much older dog- near the end of it’s life would diligently help train the new puppy. Every old dog seemed happy to peacefully pass when the new dog was mature enough to help my grandfather, alone. Every dog was named ‘Bama. My grandfather’s last dog passed when he was 92 years old. I’ve always had Rough Coated Collies. I’ve been using the same breeder. I’ve also rescued many. The only disagreement was when to start professional grooming. The breeder said 18 months, I chose 12 weeks. Since my dog would need to be very clean and pest free; the sooner my dog learned that weekly pro grooming was a must. He has learned this and he is now very comfortable with this routine. I brush my Collie daily, I also brush their teeth daily. My RCC’s were a natural choice when I needed a medical service dog. The breed is socially acceptable due to “Lassie’s” phenomenal PR. Because my RCC’s are highly trained, he barks only when alerting. I couldn’t ask for my most trusted companion, care giver and incredible friendship from Pilot, my current service dog and to all the late RCC Service Dogs.

My current collie comes from my sister-in-law's aunt who bred and showed roughs. She also owned a grooming salon where my SIL learned to groom. She no longer breeds/shows or grooms due to her health issues, but her dogs were always very carefully bred, and the litters had every test you can give collie pups 🙂 They started bathing at 3 months, I believe, gradually adding in other steps every other day. Since many of the pups were going to be shown, they needed to learn that whole rigmarole ASAP. My Sorcha is a pro a grooming, granted she's getting groomed by the people that first started grooming her to begin with 😄 I don't show her, she's a family dog, but everywhere we go with her people marvel at how pretty she is.

The males are larger. And Pal and his descendants were very big for Collies, larger than the "breed standard". My rough collie went to the groomer yesterday for the first time and apparently my training was effective! I practiced the blow dryer, bath, nail clipping and paw shaving and the groomer told me he was the goodest boy. She was impressed that he stayed so calm during the whole thing and I am so happy I practiced these things from a young age. He was a scaredy cat to go into the tub but he kinda relaxed after a while. So proud of him

I am proud of you!!! I love owners who condition their animals to get them used to different things they might encounter. It makes it so much easier on the groomer, the vet, you and especially the animal. They feel so much more comfortable with new experiences, because they have had some exposure to what is happening at home. Bravo. I wish more owners would do this.

My uncle had several different kinds of dogs when I was a kids. One was a rough coat collie named Laddy. He was a natural with me and my sisters. Unfortunately a lady from the church came to visit when me and my 3 sisters were playing outside with Laddy. He went into protection mode and bit the lady several times. The city said my uncle had to put him down even though the lady opened the gate and entered the property whilst Laddy was barking at her. My uncle didn't have a "beware of dog" sign posted. When my uncle got a rottweiler he made sure to put up a beware of dog sign. It took a long time after losing Laddy for us to watch Lassie without crying.

Thank you!! Three weeks ago I rescued a Rough-coated Collie/Border Collie mix from my local shelter. 10+ y.o. Deaf, nearly blind, severely arthritic. EXTREMELY gentle sweet girl. She is my 4th RCC along with the 4 BCs I have rescued over the years. She was a stray when found, but her severe flinching when you go to pet her makes me think she was mistreated and dumped in the country. She will have a great home here with me, my Red Merle BC and my rescue cat. The shelter vet shaved her badly matted fur, but it looks like she was shaved by his three year old child! Fortunately, fur grows back. Both dogs get professionally groomed in 2 more weeks. Thanks GWtD for featuring this regal breed today!!!

And speaking about Victoria, you might find this interesting. She left her coronation banquet early to go to give a bath to her dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if I remember correctly.

My mom actually got a rough collie from a rescue! He had been bought by a family who didnt know about the problems with irresponsible breeding, and they gave him up to the rescue when he contracted parvo and they found out he had mange. I'll always admire my mom for being able to give him his mange treatments, he did NOT like them and it was heart wrenching, but she managed to get his coat even more beautiful than before!!

My families had rough collies since maybe 2002, and you're so right about their health issues--both of our collies have had some pretty major issues. Our first dog had chronic digestive issues and needed prescription food, and our second dog has pretty bad collie eye anomaly and was at risk of going blind for a few years (she's alright now, luckily, but actually can't use her peripherals).

This dog reminds me so much of our Sheltie, Duffy. We had to put him down 1 year ago in Jan. I still miss him so much. He was such a beautiful and good natured dog. He was a big Sheltie, and was frequently mistaken for a Collie. He was funny too, he made us laugh a lot. Best dog ever.

@@TheWabbit I don't think "miniature collie" is a recognised breed, so in most cases it's just people unknowingly calling shelties miniature collie.
