Super review Thrifty! This one goes on my wishlist because it’s Rough Ryder and I like it’s appearance. Looks is my overriding factor. I rarely do any utility cutting with my knife collection members. If I need to cut something, I’ll pull a knife out of the kitchen drawer.

Understood Robert. It works fine as a collector's piece. Thanks for the feedback.

I think that style of shield is a Crest shield. I only have one reserve knife and the tube is magnetic and likely steel. I like the sunken blade it almost is flush with the bolsters and is something I like, having five pins in the covers is a lot of pins, the best thing is, it is thinner than many reserve model are. The covers could pass for ebony if you didn’t know what it is. The name Panthera means large cat like a lion, leopard or Jaguar that roars. The shape is like some Spanish and Italian designs. Maybe the design works like a Leopard’s claw. I think it would cut line, rope and things like that well somewhat like a pruning blade. I like this reserve model better than a lot of the older ones.

Yes, sort of an enlogated shield. It's not their worst design by any means, but I wouldn't say it's their best. Thanks Gizmo

I get your point TK. I have loved sowbellys my hole knife life . Like you said it's only for certain uses. I like to draw cut back towards my thumb carving wood so I love this angle! But with this knife you couldn't turn Corners easily. Because it is too tall a blade! But I love the shape I'll grab another knife to turn corners. I was flipping a coin between that one and another knife and the other knife won, but I will come back to this one. I love love it. But we have been spoiled by the wood I'd love to see that in that Oak handle! Thank you for the video TK!

Mr Kaniffy. I am late to comment. This Rough Ryder Premium model demonstrates that Rough Ryder can design its own unique knife models and also construct them flawlessly. For a 50 dollar knife the quality is amazing. I am an old guy so I don't care for the down swept non orthodox design of the blade. I love the materials and the quality of the knife though. I would like RR to design and produce a Rough Ryder Reserve premium quality Canoe design pattern using the same materials.

You might be interested in looking at Rosecraft knives then which have a similar appeal. also check out the RRR Kayak.

Looks lovely! Great Far Eastern Cutlery. The handle reminds me of an exaggerated version of the Queen Warncliffe. Obviously, not the blade! I was just slicing up some chicken breast with my Medford On Belay (not the perfect tool for the job, but it was in my pocket), but this knife blade angle would have been great. When this finally gets to the uk, I might well pick one up… assuming it comes at a reasonable price here!
@ThriftyKaniffy2 жыл бұрын
Seems it would work for some specific tasks, but the blade geometry concerns me as a more all-round user.
@JoseGonzalez-yx6vm2 жыл бұрын
nice curves on that knife, side material looks very good, I have seen older knives on eBay with that same angle design blade, it maybe is based on some old knife design where they wanted the blade to be that way, thanks for showing it!

It's rather different. It's not my favorite, but there's going to be others that really appreciate it. Thanks Jose.

I’d love to see this shape with a flipper assist and liner lock! It would be a great EDC/secondary purpose self-defense slasher in areas where only small knives are legal! Great review as always!
@ThriftyKaniffy Жыл бұрын
A modern take on it would be interesting. Thanks, Leash.
@LeashMechanic Жыл бұрын
They’ve already proven quite able to do that imho with the RR2236, one of my very favorite Rough Ryders. The flipper action on mine is amazing, totally on par with and even faster than say, my CRKT Carson flipper! Liner lockup is perfect. Blade centering also perfect. It also has a beautiful spey blade with half stops with a solid pull and excellent walk n talk. But what I like most about it is the sense of nostalgia it evokes! The blue bone scales are gorgeous and to hold it is like holding something right out of the Prohibition era! The blade is only single sided but it totally has the attitude and a look reminiscent of a “mob” stiletto from those times and to hear it flick open and lock up…man it’s just sweet! So I know RR has the engineering ability and skill to make a Panthera that way. I like the Panthera for different aesthetic reasons but if RR ever does that I’ll buy it in a heartbeat!

@johnelder42732 жыл бұрын
The best use of the knife, with that angle, would seem to be a defensive tool for slashing cuts, like a Kukri, in a place (like the UK) where you can't carry locking blades suitable for stabbing. Other than that it does not seem well designed for many tasks except box cutting or marking/scouring flat materials. It's kind of attractive though.
@ThriftyKaniffy2 жыл бұрын
I'll not try that to find out, but you're on to to something there. Thanks John.

Nice knife. (I could live without the swedge) You're spot on about the overall geometry of the knife . It would seem to limit the usefulness of the knife. Maybe this one is more for keeping then carrying. Great Video . Peace . Be Free .

Problem with a down pointing blade like that is for piercing, you have to be extra careful to not have it close in your fingers...

Very true. That's a technique that always needs to be performed with caution when using a slip joint.

Yeah, the blades not a good match, is it. Mediteranean knives of this type will have a deep trailing point so there's lots of belly to work with. They work quite well then. Something like the Corsican Rondinara comes to mind, although that is a souped up version of a Corsican herdsman's knife from back in the day. And of course you'd have to include the Navaja in this family. It's an attaractive knife though. Just not sure of it's purpose.

It just didn't work for me. Awkward to handle and use. Thanks Ian, for the comment.

Nice to see another single blade knife but oh that angle puts me right off, also to much swedge for my liking and nail nick to far back, do like the blade shape though and attractive when closed, could have been engineered better in my opinion.

Yes, another RRR that has design issues. It's no longer a surprise, really. I've come to expect it. It's when they don't that's the surprise now.
