Great review Tobias...I had not paid much attention to these untill this review, I can see several uses for them in the kitchen and work shop. Just picked up all three on CKW for about $30.00. As an observation, you and BW would make a great design team...you listening Smoky?

This was the most modern take that I've ever seen on a mushroom knife, and it's very cool! Wicked little hawkbill on that one. Cheers, buddy!

We had a wet early summer this year and it was the first year in many that we had a bumper crop of mushrooms so I got to use the wooden one again. I think it was 2016 the last time. The alum covers on these new ones are pretty cool and may last longer and I like the multi-purpose features and modifications but for me I'm a wood, bone and steel steel, and kinda knife guy. Thanks for a good look at an interesting new knife.

I’ve had my eye on that aluminum Mushroom Hunter 2 knife. Good to see it up close. I know lots of guys in the modern folding knife community don’t care for aluminum handles. But I think they’re great… light, durable, comfortable, and the anodized ones look great. I’d love to see it in purple too! Tobias (or anyone that reads this comment)… what’s the best way to know what the newest RR releases are, and also know what is planned for upcoming releases? Or even determine what the release dates are on current RR knives? The Rough Ryder website isn’t up to date and there’s no way to sort on SMKW by release date. Any help is appreciated. Good stuff as always, Tobias! 👊🏻

I think many people chase the latest rage in steels and handle materials. What’s more, these steels are hyped continuously by the manufacturers and retailers. Often the hype has more to do with what is available for use and not necessarily what is better. The best example of this was the micarta craze. Both G10 and FRN were upgrades of Micarta but you wouldn’t know that from the way it was hyped.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias You’re absolutely right. Many modern knives have much more steel than anybody will ever need or that 440 or D2 couldn’t do.

I did not even know that a Mushroom knife existed. I just always used a Hawksbill, I can see where this would come in very handy all in one combo. Thanks for sharing, Live Long Prosper and Collect Your Own Way!

I once got to enjoy a dinner of wild brook trout and sautéed chanterel mushrooms, followed by a desert of fresh wild blueberries and cream. I gathered all items.

Thanks for sharing about these rather interesting knives you showed here for mushroom harvesting. Wild edible mushrooms grow all over the woodland areas I go hunting/fishing/camping/hiking in, but I've never taken the time to learn about them or try to harvest any. I used to mushroom picking with my grandparents when I was a child, though. As well as foraging for blueberries and wild strawberries, raspberries and thimble berries too as a child. 😊 Unfortunately, I never really bothered to learn while picking mushrooms with my grandparents which are actually safe to eat and which aren't; if you get it wrong, well, you can be dead wrong. 😬Some wild mushrooms are very toxic and even poisonous and they look very similar to the untrained eye as the ones that are safe to eat. So it's a very good idea to bring along a wild edibles foraging guide as well as know your local laws for mushroom harvesting. Some jurisdictions have strict mushroom harvesting laws and seasons and limit, etc. Anyway, I'm rambling again so I must digress. 🤣Excellent video, take care and Cheers!

You're so right! Know your laws and know your mushrooms. It does seem that foraging for mushrooms is very much on the rise here in a America. I wouldn't mind doing it but I would definitely need to learn a lot first! And the one person who I know that might be able to help me learn moved about 300 miles from where I live! LOL

I got one years ago from some unknown maker that actually is a handy little tool for cutting and processing mushrooms. If you’re into foraging and the like, they’re a pretty good tool.

Hey Tobias, Great video 👍🏻 Interestingly I’ve just been looking to buy a mushroom knife for my son. He’s taken an interest in foraging for mushrooms over the last couple of years (inspired by me 😀) and I thought I would get him a purpose built knife for the task. Definitely better to cut the stork, in my humble opinion 😀 I’ve been considering a Arthur Wright peach pruner, due to the blade shape and quality of the knife. However, it doesn’t have the brush. I tend to use a Opinel myself, (which I’ve also been considering for him) Great to see some other options and I feel better informed in making a choice 👍🏻 Thanks for the very timely video and appreciate you taking the time to share this buddy 😎👍🏻

I like the deluxe one better because you can put the brush away. Nice point on using the jimping to clean stuff. Very interesting, thanks Tobias!

I’ve got the standard wood version, but this one is pretty cool. I’m tempted. I like it when SMKW makes the unusual! (Except for the new Queen cockfighting knife, which I know is historical, but is still revolting.) I like your idea of modding this one for the garden, too. The best garden knife I’ve found is the Marbles Reaper in black and orange G10. That long, lean shape, like the old peach pruner, makes it better for reaching in and cutting than the standard, squatty hawkbill, IMO. RR could offer a simplified version of this one as a garden knife.More colors would be fun!

This is by far the best of the Rough Ryder Mushroom knife and will also make an excellent modern traditional Hawkbill with very little modification.

Hey Tobias 👊 That is a nice M-Knife, overall 👌 Well, I guess I'm gonna have to pick one up myself now 😉 🍄 I think I have room for one more... 😁 Though, I would prefer a natural wooden handle, as with the French Opinel or Italian Maserin 808 with badger bristles, but this RR is great value! Thanks for sharing buddy, Atb Gus 👍

The 808 is truly top of the line and the price shows it! But the way the brush swivels is truly cool. The Opinel is also a good one.

These are almost required in Italy, as you have to cut the mushroom, not rip It away, then you have to clean It prior than bagging It. It should be atleast 2 centimeters Wide and you can't carry mushrooms in a bag that has a closed Bottom like a shopping bag. You have to use something like a rattan basket. Also, the only other knife i know they put a mushroom Blade in It Is a traditional italian hunting knife, the mugellano (large slip joint with a single spear Blade and sometimes stuck shotgun Shells remover). I think It would fit as a second blade to a folding hunting pattern like the Case one.

Also, a quick Google search showed me every kind of mushroom knife: fixed, multitools, frostwood, finnish style, laguiole, with a tiny shovel etc... i am definitely behind the curve, maybe because i think of this pattern as a single purpose tool and not something a person would like as a collectable.
