A thread restorer is a tool used to fix threads on nuts or bolts that have become damaged.
Hi, im a Pensioner . Apart from my work i like DIY stuff, lifehacks, how to make, experiments, well everything that can be made by hand in a home enviorment. This channel " Rough Hands and Unusual Ideas " about new and old ideas that you might have known . This channel is a HACK COLLECTION. It’s an entartainment oriented channel, so do not try to repeat at home everything you see, as it might be dangerous. So take care of your health.

Guys who downvoted.... It's a thread RESTORER. Used to poilish up or correct imperfections on an existing internal or external thread. It is not intended to replace a Tap or Die which are used to create the thread, just to clean up an existing one! I've been an engineer twenty years now, and this is one of those useful tips that the older guys used to pass onto us as apprentices. Thumbs up from me!

Very cool and inexpensive hack to renew damaged threads. To those of you who are thinking of this as a tap, it is not. It is a tried and true way of repairing damaged threads. Great video.

Great video. I have noticed a lot of comments about it being too soft and not hardened. HE plainly stated it's to restore the thread. A hardened male or female tap would cut distorted or bent threads off, but a softer assembly such as the one he made would reorient the threads into their intended pitch. The addendum of the thread is what would need reoriented. As for the heat not all bolts harden in tensile to a simple heat and quench. Granted, the bolts in this video are not stainless hence the rust they may or may not harden in that fashion since they may be of the wrong carbon content. What this man has done is demonstrate on old machinist technique, and he should be applauded for trying to keep these techniques alive. There are very few people that know how to do this. Cheers.

Certainly the metal will be soft; but remember you aren't cutting a thread, you are merely re-establishing what is probably a slightly damaged or rusted thread.

Very good except when the thread is damaged on a nut or bolt of a higher hardness rating. Then it will re-tap your tool with its damaged thread profile - hence manufactured a tap and die set is high carbon steel

Not a bad idea. Now you need to harden them, carburize with sugar perhaps. If I don't have the proper tap to clean a bolt hole I just cut the "flutes" with a small zip cut.

First time I have come across this idea. Well Done! Don't know if I will get around to making one but I use a lot of 1/2"-13 nuts and bolts that always have a tight spot or too. I either just go with it because sometime the time to clamp and properly turn a die might seem like a chore. I do some off site assembly and this would be quick way to chase a bad nut or screw if extra weren't around. If it is effective. That is why I am curious to drill three holes and find out!

When you drill into the nuts and bolt, you should have sprinkled a little water to protect the drill tip from overheating. When you run the homemade "threader bolt" through the bad nut you shlould spray a little oil to avoid damaging the good threads; similarly with the threader nuts on a bad bolt. Good job.

Молодец! If a large diameter bolt is used a wooden bolt and nut can be cut, which is much more interesting as die ant taps for those are quite expensive. For general size small dia metal bolts and nuts one can relatively easily find cheap taps and dies.
@D-375A-1
@D-375A-1 6 жыл бұрын
You can manufacture a thread restorer in 30 seconds, just by using a grade 8, low-alloy steel, high-tensile bolt, and a 100mm angle grinder, with a thin disc fitted! I've been doing this for over 50 years! In addition, by heating the end of the bolt when cutting slots with the angle grinder, and then letting it air-cool, it hardens the grade 8 bolt appreciably.

While this really is a great idea for when your stuck in the position when u need it right away and can't buy the actual die, this is almost always going to be WAY too soft to last more then 1 or 2 uses, or sometimes to even work properly. I'd just hate to put all that work into making something like this just to have it fail to quickly! For that reason it is 100% worth hardening by heating the part up & very quickly quenching the hot part in oil. Obviously actual dies are extremely hardened because they're made for actually cutting new threads, not just correcting bad threads. But even as a thread restorer it really needs to be hardened. To those that don't have an oxy-acetylene torch if it's small enough a propane torch will heat it up enough for hardening if your very quick to quench it in oil when it's at it's max temp, but the larger your die the harder it is to get hot enough for this. So anything you can do to help hold the heat is only gonna help get it up to temp. I persoàZ fire proof/resistant, or if nothing else sometimes even surrounding as much of the part as you can with steel or aluminum (except where your heating with propane torch) can also make a big difference in getting parts up to a higher temp then you could ever get with just heating alone. Anyone actually considering making a forge or even a kiln should keep reading: definitely watch some of the vids here on KZbin as they're extremely simple to make & anyone can do it for very cheap! There are also tons of great forge ideas online, just search for making a gas forge. You can also make coal forges which are cheaper to run but are definitely not nearly as convenient as a gas forge, plus coal versions take more time to use for obvious reasons. Even making the smaller coffee can style forges/kilns are a very useful tool to have. Ive made 3 different sizes over the years for different purposes: the large coffee can size, 1 using a steel 5 gallon bucket for the basic frame, & 1 that I made using a large gas cylinder for the frame & made 2 burners for it so it gets hot enough for melting steel. They are all cheap to make even using all the black pipe fittings that 90% suggest here & online. There are also several different insulations u can use whether brick, wool style, or cement types. While it isn't the cheaper method the refractory cement is what I used for my better 2 that I've made & they last for many years this way...

so basically you've made a tap and die out of mild steel that will wear out after cleaning a few threads in the same material. You can buy a set of taps and dies made of tool steel for a few pounds and they will stay sharp after cleaning up lots of threads. Seems a bit complicated for little reward.

I like to use WD-40 and a drill driver. Zip it in til' it stops, zip it out and repeat. Everytime it goes deeper and further polishes the threads. The WD-40 makes it easier and help remove crud. Certainly a great way to roll your own.....good idea!
