It's such a shame that Powered Up didn't do very well. While that game is a remake in the grander scheme, they added so much new stuff to it (playable robot masters included!). I would have loved to see what could have been if it did well enough for a follow-up (same goes for Maverick Hunter X).

I mean, I like the idea of having a few playable boss characters, but expecting them to make campaigns for all eight bosses in remakes styled like megaman powered up of every single game along with future games _and_ having all 8 characters _plus_ megaman (along with maybe protoman and bass) work well and be fun with the exact same levels but different play styles seems a bit much, wouldn’t you agree? A simple 1-3 unlock-able boss characters like shovel knight: treasure trove would be good enough in my opinion.

Bass and Proto Man is all I would love to have in Mega Man 11 and future main-line classic Mega Man games... Except I hope they change their moves for playable forms to more resemble their boss forms from some of the games, especially for Proto Man. He is supposed to dash instead of sliding and he is even supposed to run faster and jump higher than Mega Man.

Float Burst makes the game playable for many who don't like his control scheme tho. Especially for those who probably would have dropped the game otherwise. By contrast I loved the other 3 campaigns, but Plague was a bit too frustrating.

Fr though, the DLC for Shovel Knight practically adds 3 more full-length games plus a fighting minigame. It's absolutely ridiculous how much content is there, but even more surprising is how high quality each of the DLC modes prove to be once you play them.

@@garrettfish8471 plague knight sucks for the first 5 hours, but when I 100% it I really started liking his movement option the most compared to every other character, but I just don't like the green coins, they are the worst part of the 100 % route, yeah king has the cards, but those can be easily cheesed through using the mystery card lvl 3 where you have a high chance of getting something new so it wasn't so bad.

Funny, plague of shadows is easily my favourite campaign exactly due to plague knights controls. I understand why people don't like them, but I love flinging myself around the screen and soaring across the sky through the power of explosions. I find that one you get a feel for it, it becomes very intuitive and fun. I actually don't like the float burst just because it interrupts some of the momentum and speed that makes plague knight so fun.

My sister and I played the Trove together. I sucked so badly at Plague controls but she breezed through much easier. I think Plague Knight is a love it or hate it kinda game. I love the funny dialogue and the charm, but can't handle the controls much in platforming or for combat. Specter is both our favorite tho.

Same. I actually wasn't as in love with Specter Knight's campaign as a lot of other people. Not that I disliked it at all, but I guess the basic gameplay just felt like more like a slightly speedier version of what Shovel Knight had going on compared to the different pace of gameplay that Plague Knight encouraged. I do kind of wish he could have gotten a campaign with different levels like Specter and King Knight did, though then they probably would have taken even longer to finish everything.

I think King of Cards might even be better than the default Shovel Knight game tbh. King of Cards was my 2nd favorite of the 4 (Specter of Torment is my #1). Plague Knight campaign is def the hardest for me based on his movement, but I think King Knight was significantly easier to master given his variety of tools available.

I think the variety is great. If the mechanics were the same as the other games, it would just be old hat. King of Cards and Plague of Shadows are still familiar but unlike anything else and definitely not a retread. If you want what you are used to, go play a Mega Man for the 1 millionth time (actually, that sounds like a good idea!)

The plauge knight campaign was designed with the help of speedruners. You aren't supposed to: jump> double jump> burst. You're supposed to: jump> burst> double jump> burst jump again. And when you get more skilled, he becomes truly fun

King of Cards was my favorite campaign! The comedy is hilarious, the levels are just long enough to flesh out their mechanics, the bosses were fun, and I thought Joustus was a really fun side mode! Here, here my good friend. I am sad Johnny didn't like King of Cards as much. To me I rank it to be as equal as Spectre of Torment in terms of gameplay and story. But I have a feeling it was due to Johnny burning himself out playing too much of Shovel Knight at once. Dont get me wrong, there are some issues I agree with him but it just feels like he rushed playing the last part if he didn't fully grasp the controls. Heck I loved King Knight's controls by the third part the card game was a blast to do. I just hope his next review with Dragon Quest 5 will ge him taking his time so that he can fully enjoy the game and have a great experience.

Plague Knight's control scheme just has a higher skill level than the other modes. If you master the different skills, he's the most mobile character in the game, but you have to work at it and practice. I'd say Plague Knight has the best control scheme, the others kind of just let the game play itself.

A best control scheme to me is one that appeals to both casual and skilled play, you know how like in Mario you can either walk to be careful or run with momentum when you have the skill. Obviously Plague Knight is appealing more to the latter.

I love the speed you can achieve with plague knight's campaign. I understand how the control scheme might seem awkward at first, but I think it's extremely fun once you get a good understanding of it. Like another commenter said, I actively avoid using the float burst because it cuts the amount of speed you can get, and makes some advanced techniques more difficult. I also think, like the phase locket in the original game and the self healing in spector knight's campaign, the float burst is kind of a crutch to make the game easier. Nothing wrong with that, but I think I enjoyed the games more when I avoided these specific upgrades. Anyways, great video. I'm glad you were able to come back to Shovel Knight and review everything the game had to offer.

I get that people are frustrated because he doesn't have conventional controls, but King Knight supposedly does and I found myself dying a lot more often in his campaign outside of my control compared to Plague Knight.

Shovel of Hope was actually my least favorite of the 4, I found it to be the most basic and uninteresting in both gameplay and story. It is a solid game but it didn't really grab me, I didn't really care much for Shovel Knight as a character, much preferring the other knights. And the gameplay, again was solid, but wasn't the most interesting. I had a rather good first impression of Plague of Shadows because the gameplay was weird and different and just more fun I found. Plus I really like Plague Knight as a character and the story of it was much more interesting. And I could literally just say the same thing about Specter and King Knight, I found all 3 of them to be far better in all aspects. King Knight, I don't know man I feel like you aren't giving enough credit to him, I mean I knew how it would end, but it still was rather impactful. I will agree that Specter Knight is the best of them though.

Funny story about King Knight, actually. Midway through the campaign, I stopped, and restarted with the code with all upgrades. I then managed to get all the way to the final level without jumping once. It’s totally possible, and it’s way more fun than the rest of the game. Also my main save file locked up and wouldn’t let the last Joustus dude in the snow house show up, so I will forever be locked out of 100% :) Anyway, King of Cards is easily my favorite expansion, and I love it so much. Good luck with the Dragon Quest marathon, Johnny! You’ll probably need it.

Man I actually really liked King Knights control scheme. I think the only problem I have with it is that there could be a visual sign to to show if he could dash or not, kinda like Celeste. I did get used to it after the first level and now it’s basically muscle memory at this point, but still, It’d be helpful for people just starting out. While specter of torment is my favorite (Though combining health into your skills in new game+ can bite me), plague of shadows was actually a close second for me. I LOVED keeping the momentum going and finding fun and unique ways to get around some obstacles. I actually put down the float burst when it just killed the speed. Shovel of hope follows for being the start of it all, and the genderswap mode being a very welcome change of pace. King of cards is alright, but not for me. Showdown I completely forgot about.

King of Cards is actually one of my favorites of the DLC campaigns. I really liked the smaller levels and King Knight's playstyle gave me real Wario Land vibes. Also Joustus is fun and getting the undefeated trophy is not nearly as hard as you think it would be. as long as you found all the secret cards in the hubs and didn't tackle the houses as soon as they were available. I managed a perfect Joustus run on New Game+.

I, in no manner, mean to undermine Johnny's honest experience with King of Cards, but I do wonder if maybe the fact that he played the campaigns back to back, and this one was last, impacted his enjoyment of it because he was exhausted by when he reached this one. The reason I say this is because, this is probably the first time I've heard anyone say King of Cards was the least fun of the campaigns (and also because this one was my favorite one lol). The ending may be off-putting to some, but I just LOVED it so much, especially the post-credits scene. It's such a hilarious ending, fitting for an asshole such as King Knight. Anyways, I'm glad Johnny finally got this amazing "series" the Round 2 it deserved!

King of Cards is my second favorite campaign besides the original. Love the mechanics, Joustus was neat, and the hidden boss was a treat. Only major problem I had was reusing the boss fights and some nitpick about the continuity. This entire package is great and well worth the price.

6:09 I just want to remind everyone that Cory Barlog (the director of God of War II and Dad of War) confirmed that Kratos' cameo in Shovel Knight is canon to the rest of the God of War series. So Johnny has already knocked off one game for his future God of War Marathon.

King of Cards is a fun campaign for me. Plague Knight's my favorite, Specter's good on its own, and Shovel Knight's good and solid.

I would not have like the other campaigns nearly as much as I did if they were just shovel knight but with slight changes. The fact that they are all so different, not just from shovel knight but from other side scrollers in general, is why I love these games so much. Plague knight’s utility was incredibly satisfying to master, specter knight was super easy to have a lot of fun with, and king knight, while I agree is the weakest for both story and gameplay, had some unique challenges that came from the limited control scheme.

Plauge of shadows is my favorite of the campaigns, I first played it on 3DS first and think it's the absolute best way to play it with the ability to change your options quickly on the fly really enhanced the experience, after, but playing it on a controller when j got the switch version I found it to be not as good.

plague knight is hard to get used to but once you do he's by far the most fun to control, speedruns of his campaign are really fun to watch too, you can just zoom through any stage if you know what you're doing

Honestly, Plague Knight is the most fun one for me. Yeah it's unwieldly at first, but damn, once you grasp it all, even his basic tools become incredibly fun to zip through stages with.

I bought Shovel Knight Treasure Trove when the Switch had just come out (y'kno, I needed something to play aside from Zelda). It only had Shovel of Hope and Specter of Torment at the time and HUGE porps to Yacht Club Games for including Plague Knight and King Knight campaigns for FREE when they came out. That's some consumer friendly practices right there.
