REM's winner GEM, skin color when ripe helps a lot of folks know when it's ready. Looking forward to the taste test.

You definitely have a point on the GEM, I am really looking forward to trying it out. It might become my favorite avocado yet. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching REM!

From what I am reading it sounds like Gem protects its fruit by keeping it under the canopy and this helps inland. I also noticed that Gwen can get huge after 25 years. Not sure if Gem does but I imagine it can too.
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard Жыл бұрын
That's interesting about how big the Gwen gets, I heard even the Little Cado can get big as well. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching BAA!

GEM is a seedling of Gwen. Do your have a video on the Holiday Avocado? Unstaked it grows to about 5-6 feet with a weeping habit.

Greg A shows in his vid the Gwen gets can get big but perhaps its a slow grower like a Gem, commercial growers often plant Gems 6 to 9 feet apart.

Looks like they are both winners🏆. I like the color or the Gem and the fact that it doesn't necessarily need a pollinator. I'll stay tuned for your evaluation on the Gem flavor.

I definitely agree with you there, they are both 10/10 in my book. I like the GEM as well. Thank you for your comment my friend and thank you for watching! Hope you have a great rest of the week!

I can only plant one tree in ground which should i get, i want best production without polinator, size of tree doesnt matter. Good taste.
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard6 ай бұрын
If size doesn't matter, you cannot go wrong with a Hass. Other choices are Reed, Gem, Pinkerton and Lamb Hass. Good luck in choosing, they are all great avocado trees. But you can never go wrong with.a Hass if size of the tree doesn't matter.

My one GEM fruit that I left on is still green. My GEM tree seems to be more vigerous, Gwen whimper in growth. I think it will take a number of seasons to assess tolerance to heat/cold that will determine "the best", as micro climate will effect our view....
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard2 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank: I don't know why my GEMs are growing so slow. I gave a GEM to my Dad and his is growing about 5 times as fast as my GEMs. I think you are right it will take many seasons to determine which one is best. Thanks for sharing and thank you for watching!

Hi johnny, Gwen and gem are So similar its too difficult to compare gem is almost a clone of gwen, just with a different name they both are 10/10 I'd settle for either one in a pot. Is that your Gwen that you dug up after planting in ground? It looks very healthy I don't see any issues with it. Which is better in a pot reed vs Gwen vs gem? In your opinion?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I totally agree with you that both the Gem and Gwen are 10/10. Yes, this is the Gwen I dug up from the ground. That is a really tough choice on the Gwen, Gem and Reed since I have all 3 in containers and they are all doing well. I really like my Reed, it is a really good looking tree and grows very well. Thank you for your comment and questions!
@kanagunbr2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. What is the size of the container you recommend for Gwen or Reed?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard2 жыл бұрын
For a Reed or Gwen, I would recommend a bigger container like a 24" box or a half wine barrel or bigger container. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!

Hi, I bought to Gem avocado trees and on one of them the stems are turning black, I cut it off and it keeps moving down the stem. How do I stop this? Any suggestions?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard2 жыл бұрын
I had that same problem with my Reed. I think you need to cut it down more to a point it doesn't get black. Wondering what is the root cause of your tree turning black. Did you recently transplant it or is the GEM maybe getting wet feet due to the soil or too much watering? Good luck with your GEM!

Gwen does not need a B variety to produce in quantity. 16 oz. Gwen is a rarity, maybe just a little larger than Hass. And produces heavy every year. I have tasted Gwen & Gem, in there prime time not much difference. I have a Gwen in ground 20' tall and wide that is 36 years old.

Hi Chris: I bought mine at Subtropical Nursery in Fallbrook, California, but they sell GEMs at a lot of local nurseries in Southern California now. Garden View Nursery in Irwindale, CA and Louie's Nursery in Riverside both sell them now. I bought mine in 2020 but they are at a lot more places now. Thanks for your question and thank you for watching!
