I’ve actually gotten into a rhythm doing them by hand, I roll cigarette paper around something small and round and get a tapered cone, then I twist off the bottom and add my powder charge. Then I drop a ball into the paper and push it down until it’s tight and then flip it around and push the powder charge down against the ball, then just twist off both ends and trim the excess.

I found that using the stick as a guide when cutting the paper that by cutting it into thirds you get a near prefect fit and only have to trim the top. Additionally, my flask has a long neck which allows it to automatically measure 25 units of powder, thus letting me skip the step of having to use the measure which is built in. Otherwise this kit works as advertised and has almost no learning curve to it, allowing me to knock out 24 rounds easily and with only two mess ups, both happening when I was wrapping the paper around the rod at the start. Score yourself a plastic .45 caliber bullet case to store the finished cartridges in - you can get a really nice one at Academy sports that holds 50 rounds for just $3 with a lid that snaps on tightly and doesn't allow them to rattle around and potentially get damaged.

Even faster, if you have an 1858, is preloading a couple of spare cylinders. With practice you can do a tactical reload in about 5 seconds. Just remember that the Uberti and Pietta cylinders are not cross compatible. Whichever maker, use that maker's cylinders. Also, I usually don't use paper cartridges but when I do, I like to poke a flash hole in the end. On rare occasion the cap will not burn through the paper. If you poke a hole, a bit of powder naturally spills out while loading, and ignition is pretty certain.

without a patch or filling with lube, is just dipping the bullet/balls enough to reliably keep chain fires from occurring?
@GunsOfTheWest

Chain fires are actually prevented by using the correct-sized ball. That’s part of what I meant when I talked in the video about using the right ball for your gun. The lube has more to do with keeping the bore fouling from hardening, so the shots stay accurate. Thanks for watching!

Irony: You can make a (very dangerously sensitive) substitute for mercury fulminate by using silver instead of mercury. Silver fulminate is so pressure-sensitive that it can be set off by its own weight if you make a sizable pile of it.

Pretty much exactly how I do it with your kit both for the .44 and .36 both... Another great video Dustin, I have learned an awful lot from you and a couple of others on youtube... Keep up the Great work!!! Question? What would be the best nipples for RWS 1075 caps, they tend to be just a tad loose on my stock Pietta nipples... I was able to find them in 1000 lots but am running low on Rem and CCI, which I can't seem to find...

Dustin is it okay to use cigarette papers and just lick them with one of your cartridge formers and then glue on the bottom and glue the round ball in

I would think so, but I’m not 100% sure how strong that adhesive is, so I just use the glue stick.

What kind of paper do you use? potassium infused or ....? Do you think A.P.P. (aka Clean Shot) powder substitute would work well in paper? A.P.P. states use no lube. Should I or shouldn't I? I'm loaded with questions, I know. I'm really looking forward to rolling a few hundred rnds for the desert here in Legislationville California. This looks like a fantastic product and I am dying to try it. Shooting an Uberti New Army .44, 8" .457 RB w/#10 caps. TY, James

Hey Dustin. I don't think we've met but I believe I was at a Cowboy Action Shoot at the Wasatch Action Shooting Range when you attended once and overheard you and another cowboy speaking about your channel. I think that is how I learned about this channel. Anyway, a question. You lubed the ball, or at least half of it. But when you ram the paper cartridge into the cylinder, it shaves a ring off the outside edges of the ball. So, it seems to me the part of the ball that engages the lands is not actually lubed any more. If I understand right, the purpose of the lube is to help keep the fowling soft. Have you noticed any difference when cleaning after shooting lubed conical bullets vs after shooting lubed round balls?

I’ve actually never attended those matches, but I’m happy to hear they like the channel! I haven’t noticed a difference in the effects of the lube between conicals and round balls. When the ball is fired, there’s a tremendous amount of heat and velocity, so it seems like a good amount of lube still gets into the rifling.
