Roundtable: Diesel Discussion (Expo 2024 - Episode 24)

For episode 24, Expo hosts Joe Castello and Lake Speed Jr are joined by Cass Choate, Chuck Lynch, Chris Straub, and Matt Hussey for a great deep dive discussion on diesel.
The guys talk about the major differences between diesel and gas engines (“torque tears up everything”), and how they manage problems unique to diesel like maintaining load over a longer duration.
The conversation also dives into building engines for the application, and the big differences between the products of companies like Cummins, that just build engines, and those like Ford that build engines for specific vehicles.
We also learn where they think the weak links in each diesel platform are, the relationship between fuel tumble and the combustion bowl (“it’s like peeling an onion”), how to improve throttle response, and boosting horsepower by increasing rail pressure.
Finally, we get a couple of interesting diesel tidbits including which diesel engine Matt thinks has the best head on planet Earth, and the connection between Anheuser-Busch, the beer company, and Cummins.
