Ukraine is using 3D printers and civilians to make hundreds of small drones every day. They spot tie RPG rounds underneath these small drones. They use a lightweight spotter drone to go out and find targets then the armed drone comes in and hits it. They are taking out trucks, tanks, armored vehicles, air defense, and soldiers. This is HUGE force multiplier and it's very cheap. Why can't the Russians retake Kursk? Because Russia is horrible at mobile operations. They are good at sitting in a trench behind huge minefields with artillery behind them. Also, Russia cannot accurately detect the enemy. Their fighting doctrine is to hit an area with massive artillery strikes then go in with tanks and they don't want to move their artillery from the Donbass, Donetsk, and Crimean areas. If Russia sent fighters to attack an area near Kursk they would just area bomb and run home while western fighters would accurately identify a target and place bombs within feet of that target. China already has stealth fighters. A war with China will be more of a space war than people realize.

They CAN retarget shaheds in flight! They use cheap modems to connect to local cell networks to provide guidance updates. Yes, this method makes them vulnerable to jamming, but considering they are launching 60+ DAILY, some of those do get to target.

One of the advantages of a drone in a hot war is that they are being produced in high quantity and the testing and R&D get spread over that larger number of units. Additionally, the more complicated expensive cruise missles have long and varied supply chains, which are difficult to scale to get them to a cheaper weapon. Lastly, unless there is an extential threat, private companies and countries don't want to invest in factories which can produce more weapons than the country can afford and have to use as they are produced.

I appreciated the arguing during procurement about how not all were electric (ignoring the obviously stupid anti-ev stuff). Like, I have an EV and even I understand that having an older ICE engine out in a rural area is good for the next few decades until we build out our infrastructure.

About 40 years ago I was shown a defense readiness assessment that placed soviet aircraft at 96% available vs 70% NATO. They achieved this by insanely expensive scheduled maintenance. Example was Mig-21 at 600 hours “replace wiring”. Inspect nose wheel undercarriage with 10x magnifier, if crack found, replace. Basically no regard to economics at all. The origins were that they copied WW2 German practice except that was based on 100 hours survival. Today we wonder what Russian Air Force practice is, and what availability is. They have needed to re-source a lot of parts and consumables and process a lot of engineering changes. Interchangeability has probably worsened.

For small arms drones I think people are imagining the wrong drone! Google 3” ducted FPV drone. Add an ultra light single use .22 caliber 3.5” barrel with something like the special load ultralight version of FNH 5.7 (the ultra light not to reduce weight but because it has the highest energy at short range w/ short barrel) or if they perform well in short barrels you could .17HMR but I don’t know how those perform out of short barrels. Anyways it’s going to come down to software and most importantly the will to deploy such a drone! Because it’s going to be the software doing the shooting. There is no body armor out there that’s going to stop a FNH 5.7 to the face from point blank! Eventually these will be used. They can be made smaller and more effective than micro explosive drones. It’s possible to even do multiple shots. Load them up with 4 barrels. Maybe you need a 3.5-4” drone at this point but it’s doable. Also don’t worry about recoil. The drone might go tumbling through the air but flight computer will solve the tumble nearly immediately. So depending on the size of the drone it might get shoved back a foot while flipping but it will recover. Get a big fiber optic coupled human flown hexcopter drone with half a dozen of these to drop them all above trench they go in and they all get neck and face shots and maybe then use that magical software that can cook off a lithium ion and turn it into an explosive… just kidding. It wouldn’t take much to trigger something that burns out the flight computer so they aren’t easily reused. Anyways this stuff really just going to come down to who has the will to use without suffering political blowback. That’s going to be a bigger problem than writing software to get a drone with something like .17HMR or FNH5.7 to get a face shot from 1 foot away!

For drone v cruise missile cost I would also add the economics, Drone parts are produced in huge numbers due to civilian market driving down price but missiles have significantly smaller production rates and defense contractor salaries and much higher that a Chinese factory worker. For drones and small arms, the recoil can disrupt the stability of the platform making quick follow up shots difficult.

I've heard that the flight computer is very failure prone, and flight hours are incredibly low because the first few production aircraft are constantly having to be rebuilt. I think it was an ISW analysis of russian air power a few months ago.

Kamikaze drones are frequently being used in place of artillery because there isn't enough artillery ammo. The one advantage of shooting from drones is that the lower a drone flies the more likely the drone is to lose communications with the controller, and the majority of kamikaze attacks fail because of this - up to 90% fail we only see video of the successes. Staying high and shooting at infantry reduces the chance of losing the drone and allows the drone to stay up where signal is good. As to the difference between drones and missiles, the rocket equation is instructive. The lower the performance of the engine the less severe, but the basic physics still applies to something like a Shahid. Anything added has a cascading impact on the complexity of everything else. This is also an advantage of drones over manned aircraft. I've read thst 25% of the F-16 is the cockpit or the cascading added capability required as a consequence of the cockpit.

Big disagree on the drones with small arms. An artillery system is a big expensive thing. Sure if the drone is just spotting then you can engage again and again using the same drone view, but a single 155mm SPG is the price equivalent of a THOUSAND drones. Heck, every single time you fire that cannon, you're effectively "spending" a drone. Cheap drones with AKs that have been pried out of dead Russian hands probably isn't the answer, but imagine that drone with a stabilized precision rifle and a thermal sight, picking off infantry before they have any hope of hearing the drone. Scary.

There are drones with guns. But they do not fly. There have been small tracked vehicles with mounted machine guns for a long time. They lack the mobility of flying drones of course. Because of the stability of the tracked vehicle, the gun is deadly accurate. The gun has to be operated (fired) by a human or it is a violation of the Geneva Convention. No autonomous kill bots allowed. And I am totally positive no one is working on those. Totally. Ah, 13:34 there's a more modern example.

Drones don't have guns because most drones are too small / light / lack the mass to handle the recoil given off even by even a 5.56 or 7.62 rifle if you were to stick one on. (Ukrainians have tried, the recoil is too high, it causes the drone to spin out of control after the first 1st or 2nd shot). A large drone like the US Reaper might be able to carry a gun, dunno. A Russian engineer recently tried to make a recoiless rifle for small drones. Russian military wasn't interested.

6:24 "The SU-34 is a bomb truck" Without explanation Ryan omits from the rest of the conversation. Stand off weapons like glide bombs and cruise missiles are exactly what Russia is using to attack at and near the front lines.

3:20 No I don’t care about new delivery trucks, Let me know when they have a pneumatic tube system working cause trucks with A/C are not newsworthy barely even memo worthy should’ve picked a different article, ground news is a neat idea but A/C trucks? Seriously?

6:40 "... those are out of production..." So? If they get destroyed they're gone forever. So what? Why wouldn't Russia still use them? They ain't no good just tying up resources on the ground.

It makes them a bit precious.

@@richardkudrna7503 Maybe precious for museums. What would Russia be saving them for, that's more important than the situation that Russia is currently in? Russia is struggling. If it has airworthy warplanes it should be using them. The argument that they're precious doesn't makes sense (except for museums).
