Hello everyone, this video is dedicated to my Patron Mike Barnett who has been doing some amazing things with my MIDIs. He's been supporting me since the beginning, so I want to thank him and all of you for your ever-growing support! This piece evokes the feelings of being in a dream, like floating amongst clouds in ultimate tranquility, I hope it brightens your day.

This piece is considered by many to be Satie's most prominent work. But while, as you can see, a lot of people in the comments reminisce about old times, express emotions of sadness or happiness, feel calm and tranquil from the simplistic beauty of Gymnopédie, he never intended it to be interpreted in any of these ways. Satie produced this piece as "Furniture music", sort of like musical white noise in the background of other activities. For example, as ambiance for a fancy restaurant. He never knew that it would become so impactful in the world of music, as he died in 1925 and his legacy started to rise in the 1960s. It's amazing how even in a minimalist throwaway piece, he was able to, accidentally or not, capture such a wide range of experiences and moods, still listened to by millions around the world in modern times.

@@jldragongamesI don't think it is as unlikely as it seems. Camille Saint-Saens wrote "Carnival of the Animals" and locked it in a drawer, never to be performed. He was embarrassed by it. This (Satie's song) is favorite classical piece, and I often hear it in the most unlikely places. As an example, there was a Benny Hill Sketch where he is a clown who falls asleep and, while this piece plays, has a dream about dancing with a beautiful woman who walks off of a billboard.

Simple can be relative to a lot of pianists~ So something could be very simple, but the way pianists play it can be considered difficult :) Satie may make it look simple, but there has to be a certain mood I'm sure he wanted portrayed.

This was the song that always put me to sleep when I was a baby. This song is one of my earliest memories. Playing it in front of my family today felt a little surreal, like the past was repeating itself. It was one of the very few times i've seen my dad cry. I wish I could thank Erik Satie a thousand times for this beautiful piece that inspired my love for piano.

@@Allry24 Sometimes it's so, but sometimes things really change. Sometimes you meet very good people, that become friends of a life but one day they go far away in an other city, in an other country and you will not meet them again. In my case, i fall in love for the first time (and i will not fall in love for an another) 8 years ago, i was, and i am deeply in love for her, but i never say it to she. She was a very nice person for me, we spoke a lot of times about life, music, a lot of things, sometimes our eyes look so intense to each other, one time she write on a little paper, something, she was going to give it to me but suddenly she chose to put in a basket it, perhaps she was embaressed. I will never know what she wanted to tell me, but i think that for sometime she fall in love for me. Now years are passed and i never met she again, but i remember that beatiful days and my heart everytime fills of warm nostalgy, remember her green eyes, her smile, her words, every moment that i passed with her. @@NobleOne-cm7lr As with most art, it lives through interpretation. With that being said, some people just absolutely murder art, especially in the medium of music. Though the actual beats and rests may read one thing, there is also an important part to playing an instrument which includes style and personally the way rousseau interprets this piece is the exact way I believe it should be played. You can find the sheet music online for free as it's copyright laws are all expired by now. Hope this helps!

I dunno if the composer, Erik Satie, would have considered it a masterpiece. He composed it for relaxing reasons. You know, Music that could be played in the background while pepole are talking or reading, something like that. No kidding, that was really his intention. But nevertheless, for me it is a masterpiece. :-)

This makes me tear up, that's how nostalgic it is. When I was around 7, I had a little owl toy that would play music until morning, with his face glowing yellow. At morning his face would glow green and say "hoo-hoo! it's ok to wake up!" This was one of those songs that would play. It was always hard for me to sleep, having ADHD. I would hear this one play a lot while I was bored. This song in particular however, would be the one that would ever put me to sleep. I finally found it. I am so happy.

I really love it too but for lack of better words it was ruined by her death. I can't listen to it and not think of that person and it really hurts. So it kinda sits there. And sometimes when I wanna feel that extra bit closer, I'll have it play in my room and just run over the memories through my mind. You were taken far too soon, Samantha. everyone interprets things differently. some people might see it as sad because of similar pieces they experience it with. nostalgia is also usually associated with past memories and maybe people can’t attribute this to anything that reminds them of a past experience. so there’s no wrong or right way to describe it, although some words fit better than others. i don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying it’s sad, depressing, nostalgic, or melancholic. personally, i would agree that it does feel melancholic.
@spookydapanda

Maybe melancholy but I wouldn’t say nostalgic. I feel absolutely no nostalgia while listening. I see it as simple yet beautiful. Mainly because when I play it, I notice the patterns and realize how simple it is but it doesn’t feel that way.

I never realized this song was used in popular media that people confuse for being the original like Minecraft or Haruhi. I've always known this song as a child because of choir, my teacher loved to play random songs before the bell rang. Gymnopedie and Clair de Lune are my favorite. I've always romanticized piano ever since I was 14 it always made my heart swell. It's so beautiful! A horrible experience almost ruined Gymnopedie for me, but I don't want to let that win, because I've always loved the song even before things happened. Listening to you play now, I try to forget the present memory that hurts me, and try to recall my younger days instead. ^^
@SJohann
@SJohann 4 жыл бұрын
While this piece has been used in games before, it actually isn't used in Minecraft. The main reason people think it's from Minecraft is because Gymnopedie No.1 and the Minecraft soundtrack are what's known as 'Furniture music' or music that's played in the background which you're not supposed to pay attention to. Plus, Gymnopedie No.1 and Minecraft's most well known song, 'Sweden', have a few similarities which could confuse listeners.

Ok but imagine this. A young Russian soldier, after having lost all his friends and family in the war, walks alone in the snow. His bones are colder than the empty roads outside and he looks at all the bright windows and hears the sound of sweet lullabies coming from them and yearns for a place or a person he also could call home, where he could curl up in warmth and cry. Yes, i have a depression. There, i said it! I think i'm not worth, i'm struggling with my work and i try to be perfect and try to avoid all mistakes at work. When i make one, it makes me sick. But this song, it helps. I'm walking on a beach, hear the waves coming in, hear the seagulls, and i'm in peace....

There is no sadness in depression. People who are diagnosed with depression often don't feel anything. No sadness, no happiness, no desire and so on. @@taeyongssidehoe7014 I am really sorry to hear that. I apologise for trying to be a smartass.. Sometimes I am triggered when people associate sadness with depression, but that's my problem that I need to take care of. I am suffering from seasonal affective disorder and very soon I should become a psychotherapist, so I have interviewed many people with depression in general. But since I am still learning psychology, I tend to make many mistakes. One of them is forgetting how people experience the same things in a different way. Once again, I apologise for being an ass. I truly hope that you are managing your depression effectively. I only become depressed during the winter, when I usually exercise daily, eat healthy, taking vitamins and visiting psychotherapist, but all of that helps just a little. Depends on the day. Anyway I just hate that feeling of emptiness,but at least I get better usually in March, so that's a good thing. Is there anything that helps you with depression, at least occasionally? Sorry if I'm asking too much, you don't need to answer this

This recollects me of a moment when I was a child about 4 years old, I would always hear this being played by somebody near our apartment where there is a public piano standing right there, Everytime I'd look at the balcony or at the screen door to listen I'd almost fall asleep or even fall asleep in the dirty rugs by the door, I still remember my maid taking me out of the dirty rags to my bed room where I cannot hear the tune anymore, Years me and my family moved away through that place, Suddenly whilst I was browsing on KZbin I heard this song and felt a sudden familarity hearing it upon, I remembered that man always playing the piano, That moment I remembered that man was a beggar unnoticed by many in our neighbourhood, Knowing this I tried to find the song's name and maybe try to learn it too, After 3 years have passed I finally found the song in a KZbin's description, *I found it about 3 months earlier*I was really happy to find this beautiful song once again, I'm considering on learning it by my parents piano if I could ever do so, This made me so nostalgic.
