The owner’s manual says you need to replace your transmission fluid and filter every 120,000 miles. Something you can do yourself? You bet! You just need to be ready for a little bit of a mess but it’s pretty simple to do and should only take you about an hour.
This work was done on my 2014 Chrysler 200 with the 2.4L DOHC (Dual VVT) motor. It has the 4-speed 40TES automatic transmission. This video should work for anyone that has that same transmission, though access to it might be different.
Parts (Amazon Affiliate Links):
• Automatic Transmission Filter Kit amzn.to/3BYYA0w
• ATF+4 Fluid (4 quarts): amzn.to/3J2g0MA
Tools (some links are Amazon Affiliate Links):
• 10mm socket, ratchet
• Mallet
• Torque wrench (to torque bolts to 105 in-lbs) amzn.to/3sn4NQE
• Funnel (to pour in your fluid) amzn.to/3OxushP

This video is great. I seen my transmission on my 2010 was leaking at the gasket and thought i had to get grey loctite gasket maker sealer like back in the days with the cork gaskets. My filter definitely came with the gasket.

Hello, I have a question. I have a 2012 Chrysler 200 V6 with 102k miles and the transmission has never flushed at all. I wanted to replace the filter and have it flushed but I read that a flush on a transmission that’s never been flushed for a long time will cause damage. Is that true?
@CarbonsDIYGarage
@CarbonsDIYGarage Жыл бұрын
I understand the question but I don't know that I have a great answer for you. When I hear "flush" I think along the lines for using equipment for forcibly drain all the fluid from the system (pushing it out with other fluid, drawing it all out via vacuum, etc.), vs. draining it where you just open a valve or cover and let whatever come out come out thanks to gravity. I've never done a flush and I don't know if doing it causes any damage if it's been 100,000+ miles. Maybe others can comment on that, there are other answers online, or call a local transmission shop. As for draining and refilling, I've done it on this Chrysler at 149,000 miles and done it on at least 2 other vehicles at over 100,000 miles. It's never causes a problem to just drain the loose fluid and refill with new fluid. Not all that helpful of an answer, I know, but that's all I know. Thanks for watching and good luck.

You know when you edit the part of hitting it with hammer, is that a long process?
@CarbonsDIYGarage
@CarbonsDIYGarage Жыл бұрын
Sorry it's taken 3 weeks to get back to you. This info might help someone else. I went back and looked at the raw footage. Over the course of about 5 minutes I spent about 90 seconds smacking it with the hammer, so really not very long at all. I paused every 10-20 seconds to adjust where I hit it, but it really wasn't that difficult to get loose (though 90 seconds seems like a long time when you're doing it). After it came loose, I used a screwdriver to pry it away a little more, also trying to make sure it all ended up (mostly) in the catch pan. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching, Irving. All the parts info is in the video description but this car uses ATF+4 in the transmission. At 10:57 in the video I talk about filling it back up. The capacity is 4 quarts but be sure you don’t overfill it.

Transmission fluid line? I’ve never done that kind of work so I’m afraid I can’t really help but maybe others will comment with ideas. Have you read the code(s) with a code reader? You could also disconnect the negative battery connection for 30 seconds to clear the code and then see if it comes back. Good luck!

@Carbon's DIY Garage thanks yea just took it to autozone. It's popping up as large evap leak. I fix one thing and now an evap leak. Only have 69000 on it. Checked gas cap it looks fine. Car runs great. Just worried when I have to do emissions it won't pass with that code on

@@lastnightsfuckups5834 At least it’s not the transmission! I don’t know much about evap but maybe you bumped a hose loose when you did the transmission work. Maybe check all the hoses?

So does it come from the factory with rTV? I thought it would come stock with a gasket
@CarbonsDIYGarage
@CarbonsDIYGarage 10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what comes from the factory. I'm not the original owner of this car and the RTV shown in this video, just based on how it was applied, was not done at the factory. So it's possible that from the factory there was a gasket; I just don't know for sure. Thanks for watching.
@deathscreton
@deathscreton 6 ай бұрын
It comes stock with RTV. Manual claims maintenance is not required. There's no listed schedule maintenance, and it claims the fluid is Val for the lifetime of the vehicle.

I believe about 10 foot pounds is normal to prevent damage to the gasket.
@CarbonsDIYGarage
@CarbonsDIYGarage Жыл бұрын
10 ft-lbs would be 120 in-lbs, pretty close to the 105 in-lbs I used (8.75 ft-lbs), so 10 seems also reasonable. I’ve since sold this vehicle but for the ~2.5 months between when I made this video and when I sold it, there weren’t any leaks so I think these torque values worked just fine. Thanks for watching, Dave.

@@CarbonsDIYGarage I wasn’t trying to question your technique or torque values. You said in the video that you had heard different things from different people. I was just throwing what a couple of mechanics told me in there. Plus, being a DIY person, I have purchased Haynes manuals in the past for various cars that I owned. The general consensus on valve covers, transmission pans and oil pans seems to be between 8 and 10 foot pounds, so you’re right in that range. Anyway I noticed towards the end of the video that you were working on a car older than mine. I’m trying to find a video on how to service my 2015. It’s supposedly lifetime fluid, but every reputable mechanic on KZbin says that’s BS.

@@DiligentDave1966 I didn't take your comment as anything other than valuable input. I was just trying to say that your comment jives what my experience has been as well, which is a good thing. I don't know how helpful this is, but for my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.6L Pentastar and "lifetime" tranny fluid, I changed the fluid and filter at 90,000 miles. Had to make my own dipstick since it's "dealer service only" but I also call BS on "forever fluid." kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJqaXmmna79pY9k

@@CarbonsDIYGarage Scotty Kilmer has like a billion views and he said it’s BS too. The problem with him is he’s an opinionated jerk who hates on certain vehicles. He also doesn’t really show how to do anything like this, just says you have to take it to a mechanic. He claims to be a great mechanic, so I don’t know why he doesn’t just show us how to do it.

@@fsanchez6160 Assuming you have the same 2.4L engine that I had with the 40TES 4-speed transmission, it's just 4 to 4.5 quarts. I actually overfilled it a little when I put in 4 quarts so I'd start with max 3.5 quarts and check the levels as you slowly add more over time. Definitely don't want to overfill it. The LX model has the 40TES 4-speed. The Touring and Limited models had the 62TE 6-speed transmission. I don't know what the fluid capacity is for that transmission; sorry.

Get a Toyota with a drain plug and you won’t have this issue
@starkibury

You should have drained the fluids first before dropping the pan 😅😅
@CarbonsDIYGarage
@CarbonsDIYGarage 11 ай бұрын
That would be awesome! Unfortunately, in this case, the transmission pan doesn't have a drain plug so you're only option is to remove the pan with fluid in it. Well, or you could pump it out through the dipstick/fill tube, but you'd still end up with residual fluid in the pan. And it's way more fun to play "see if I can avoid getting it all over the garage," right? 😉 Thanks for watching.
