Sam knows his onions on these engines. I hope you buy him a few beers.....

The serp front covers have the remote thermostat in the bottom hose which acts as a T piece (it has the bypass hose, water pump inlet & bottom hose connection). I've got that style front end but have put tge thermostat back in the top hose & run a full flow heater valve as my bypass path which works well. On the topicof oil pumps al of the later stuff uses a crank mounted georotor pump rather than the older skew gear driven gear style pump. The skew gear drive isn't up to driving a pump which generates high oil pressures, certainly not for long periids at higher rpm. All the bits do interchange but you need all of the parts that match & that includes the sump on the later style front covers.

You are lucky you can still work on your cars on the street, some people aren't so lucky!

Hi Sheldon. The V belt type crankshaft pulley is made up of separate belt rings. They bolt together with long thin boilts, and spacers. You build it up to get the correct spacing for all the ancillaries fitted to different models. The later Thor, cross bolted crankcase engines don't use as many head bolts. The heads are interchangeable, but the outer row of bolts, near the exhaust have been deleted, and the bolts and torque settings are different.

I think the more "SD1" the better for this build ?

I'm confused about the 90 degrees tightening procedure. My factory workshop manual says nothing about this. Head bolts 1-10 are 70lbf.ft, & head bolts 11-14 are 45 lbf.ft. Are you using a special gasket type that changes the original parameters?

I will ask Sam as I honestly don't have enough knowledge to answer!

The later 3.9 and larger capacity engines are known as the "Thor engine", or cross bolted block engine. They can be identified by the row of bolt heads running front to rear down the flat sides on both sides of the crankcase. They clamp the sides of the block into the main crankshaft bearing caps, for a stronger crankcase. Later engine blocks didn't have the holes drilled for the 3rd row of head bolts, those nearest the exhaust manifolds. The heads are still interchangeable, but the head have different bolts/torque down proceedure.

@@brianwhittington5086 Thanks for that Brian, I was assuming it was a "bog standard" 3.5 lump.

@marklittler784 It's a good job you don't have a Rolls Royce then Mark. They have left hand thread wheel nuts on one side, and right hand thread on the other. 🤪🤣

Honestly not a criticism but after all the time spent on mechanics Sheldon you really should know how to perform such a simply task as refitting a head? Great vid however so very well done Sir.

Guess what, Tubular exhaust manifolds don't seem to fit on straight six Triumphs, either, not even the good ones!

This is your videos you should be able to do the mechanics you seems better doing videos then not doing the mechanics
