I'm glad you checked the 3 button Genesis pad. I originally thought it wasn't working properly, but after your review I went and took out another one I had in storage and it worked 100%! (I'll have to open up the original pad I tested with and see if there's anything I can fix on it) Given the choice, I'll always take the 3 button pad over the 6 button ones (too small and fiddly). It may not be significant, but I was able to get my SNES Game Genie working - with the exception of Super Mario All Stars, which gave a black screen just as you described. EDIT: I have to revise my assessment of 3 button compatibility after all. I first noticed that in Ms Pac-Man, I was having trouble getting it to recognize the pressing of the Start button. Then I put in the Genesis 6 Pak cart, and it wouldn't recognize any inputs at all! Games like Strider and Raiden Trad all worked normally with the pad, however. Very strange. EDIT 2: In retrospect, the fact I was getting different results at different times should have been an obvious clue. I broke out my can of electrical contact cleaner today, and sprayed it into the 9-pin socket of my 3 button controller - lo and behold, it is now working properly with every game on the SRT+. The lesson here is that even in storage, oxidation can take place on metal surfaces, and you can't take for granted that a 25-30 year old bit of equipment is going to be working as if it were in pristine condition. I'm definitely in for one of those new Sega licensed Genesis controllers Retrobit will be putting out this year!

4:33 sounds like typical reverse duty cycles that so many NES clones suffer from. Cant mistake that coin and power up sound. The Retro Duo and RES have over amplified sound. The original Retro Trio (the one with the Genesis controller ports) actually does not have any issues (avoid the one with the SNES ports). Its one of the few. The only one I would recommend.

As always, I appreciate your thorough and balanced review! I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but another game that really should be tested on all these clone consoles is Battletoads on the NES. Apparently many clones simply freeze up in the middle of Level 2, making the game unplayable unless you take a warp past it. That's a popular game, so it could be a dealbreaker for some people. But I don't think any of the big KZbin reviewers bother to try that one out.

I have the new black/blue version called the "Galaxy Edition". It seems to be the same black/blue console that was released in Europe, but with the video output changed from PAL to NTSC. The audio is strange in that the composite av-out has stereo sound, but the HDMI-out still only has mono sound. My old white/red version has mono sound on both the composite av-out and HDMI-out. I can't find any mention of this version anywhere, not even on Retro-bit's website. I just randomly saw some on ebay a few weeks ago.

They work great with a CRT TV and an NES Zapper or Konami Justifier (Genesis, at least that Ive personally tried)! Just don't bother with Decap Attack on Genesis (unless you have an original Model 1 or 2 Sega), or the Hudson Soft Super Multitap 2... I've had no luck with either. Otherwise, fantastic console!

Update 11/25/18: My Retron 5 finally died (my 2nd one to do so) so I gave this another shot. It's working great out of the box (I was just unlucky I guess.) Saves on desk space. If you were to cut out the Genesis slot from the equation, (I have a Mega Retron HD and cause the HD-2 don't have one) and we're just to compare the SNES and NES, which would you recommend. The super retro Trio Plus or the Gamerz Tek Super HD-2? They are both pretty close in price and I can't find a video comparing the two. The SNES looks great on both from what I can see but which NES is better? Also which has the better HDMI output. I really wanna do some game captures with whichever I get. Sorry for the long question. Thanks ahead of time.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, good question. They're very similar, but there are 2 questions you need to answer: 1) Do you want native 4:3 video or is 16:9 ok? 2) Do you plan on playing any PAL Games? +The Gamer Plus Slated because of the sound? Not quite understanding what you mean by Slated. But I don't care who's nameplate is on this, I covered the sound issue and my disappointment quite well. Also the video quality on the SNES side was off in spots too. The Genesis side, to me a non-Genesis fanatic, I thought looked the best out of all-three systems. For a casual enthusiast who just wants to play Genesis, NES and SNES games this is a fine system, but it is not without its faults which I think I do a decent job of pointing out even though I don't dwell on them. I will say out of the 2 multi systems I have tried to this point, this one and the Classiq2, this is a MUCH better system than the Classiq2 and a better value.

I don't agree with your flash cart, ever drive stance...it's not emulation like a modded wii or nes classic. It's only emulating the rom and it acts just like the real one for the most part. This allows me to protect my collection so not to worry about save states or cart degration when using hardware as intended for playing or on a clone system. It is an important tool for causal and core retro gamers alike.
@RoXolid6 жыл бұрын
+Zer01 I don't need yet another way to play the same game, know what I mean. Flash Carts aren't exactly cheap and, when you have 49 ways to play a game, at least to me, I don't need a 50th with little to no difference in performance
@thebugg3336 жыл бұрын
RoXolid Productions , that's understandable but for me..when I play original hardware I like to keep my collection with little use so it can last longer. A clone system and an everdrive offers this. The ever drive and multicart not only help reserve your collection but allows you to play expensive, un released and patched games. I have many ways of playing also, but there are times you want to play hard to get or unreleased on original or cloned hardware. It's nice to have options, every gamer is different.

You should definitely not buy this console if you look around everybody saying it melts the regular Nintendo entertainment system cartridges and I got it tried to play tech Mobile and one of my player tried to run forward he would turn around and run backwards sporadically all the time cuz the controllers are terrible I mean these controllers are the cheapest pieces of garbage I've ever seen if you really want one that's a good one the supertron HD from hyperkin that's the best one to get if you're not just going to go out and rebuy and SNES which is probably the best thing to do

No stereo sound.

+SaturnHST It didn't appear so in my edits, it looked like mono split to both left and right sides.

Not really surprised. The only Genesis clones that can do stereo are old Taiwan clones from the '90s. On a real Genesis you can definitely hear stereo separation at the start of level 1 in SoR2. Does the SNES side at least have stereo? Most other SNES clones seem to do stereo. Also Everdrives are not emulation since it plays the games on actual hardware.

+SaturnHST I wasn't seeing separate left and right audio differences when editing, I'd lean more towards mixed mono as well on SNES.

I really wasn't back in the day, I owned a Genesis for a few months but I was primarily a Nintendo playerperiod in recent years however I've actually bought every single Sega Home console, from the Master System up through the Dreamcast.

So you're basically saying emulation is better unless you're rich and wanna risk the games acting up
@RoXolid5 жыл бұрын
Quite the opposite. I prefer hardware solutions over emulation every time.
