Solutions others have come up with are : X51 oil pan, deeper sump and an "accusump" system. I believe Hoovey from Hoovey's Garage ran the bearings in his 996 when he tracked it and from memory he said that the non-dry sump design of the 996/986 led to oil starvation through corners. Perhaps that's the reason Porsche kept the dry sump design for the GT3 and Turbo models and if so maybe a dry sump modification or GT3 motor is the (not cheap) fix ? If that's true, then all non-Metzger (?) engined Porsches should have similar problems if tracked (I don't know whether they do ).

Virtually all other engines die of oil starvation in Porsche swaps, the forces in the back are much more severe than in the front. You need a well engineered dry sump to make it work on track, even the standard factory engines don’t last long in track use applications.
@HomeBuiltByJeff7 ай бұрын
Actually that is not true. I have driven and witnessed countless 911's (the ones with the engines in the back) and Boxsters (the ones with the engines in the middle) do endless laps on tracks all over the world completely stock. The very very rare ones to ever have oil starvation issues are usually on super sticky tyres on tracks with extremely long high g corners.
@tomkatdj7 ай бұрын
@@HomeBuiltByJeff nice to have your reply Jeff, but I feel you might be wrong there. So many of the blown engines I’ve seen have suffered starvation, let’s see what yours looks like inside before jumping to conclusions……..my money is on a spun bearing at the far end of the engine, away from the oil pump. A bit of advice from an experienced track junkie: Dedicated track car. If track days are something you're gonna do, that's what Roxster needs to be. You have the truck and trailer to haul and the reasons for why you shouldn't use your street car as a track car are abundant and obvious. The best part is, Roxster is a perfect candidate for this. It's already been roached-out by its previous owner and it will cost you a lot of money to make it a respectable road car again. Your channel has never built a track car before, so that's something interesting and watchable for Home Built. Pull the trigger. Do it. I'll watch your track day adventures.

I’m questioning the IMS failure because at least going by the headlights being amber and a 2.5L engine you most likely have a dual race IMS bearing. With the rattling you heard and it getting louder it is most likely a timing chain failure, the results are basically the same but it would be amiss to blame the IMS bearing. The reasons Porsche didn’t revert back to the double race bearing having suffered so spectacularly with the single race bearing were quit clear: 1) The double race bearing placed a lot of torque on the timing chains, leading to stretching and breaking, causing what would later be seen as IMS bearing failure (after all the single race bearing failures came to light) but was in fact timing chain failure, the same result but different failure. 2) The single race bearing reduced torque to the timing chains but increased torque on the bearing, Porsche could swap IMS bearings with a clutch change, just an hour more work but replacing timing chains is a whole lot more labour intensive, slower and inconvenient, involving engine removal and strip down. My conclusion is a timing chain failure due to the symptoms described and the reliability of the 2.5L dual race bearing, given the facts I have stated above I don’t believe you have suffered an IMS bearing failure although if/when you pull everything apart it will look almost identical to an IMS bearing failure.

You're not boiling the fluid. If the fluid boils the the pedal will drop to the floor and you die. It would be the pads cooking if you lose brake force. Regular street DOT4 is fine for most brakes except full race spec. Penrite 600 isn't too expensive. Swap out the fluid, get Ferodo DS2500 pads and remove the booster and ABS. You'll need a manual booster and bias bar to take rear pressure out. That will be plenty.
