As with all great albums, some of the musical and lyrical tensions are resolved not entirely within the track itself, but also in the transition to the next track. So glad you are continuing your exploration of this beautiful work.

Yeah, this definitely feels like song that either is part of the ending, or the beginning of another track. This was at a time where deciding the order of songs on an album was taken pretty seriously.

Hi JP. Dave from Somewhere (Along The Way). Great reaction - I love your description of the tension building in this song. This is my favourite album of theirs, especially the second side (the wonderful Bogus Man, Grey Lagoons and the title track). Fantastic mix of brilliant songs, eccentricity, experimentation, and great musicianship. There's so much drama in the drums, guitar and woodwinds on this track - as you say, so atmospheric. I get your VdGG comparison, but Ferry wins me over more than Hammill does.

I LOVE this tune. First few listens were frightening. It's a slow burner/grower and is one of the deep cut highlights of the For Your Pleasure album.

Those backing vocals always make me think of Kate Bush, who I imagine was a big Roxy fan. This album, like their first, still amazes and sounds like the future. The first 2 Roxy Music albums and Bowie’s Hunky Dory are my top 3 albums of the early 70s. Great that you’re working in this theme right now. Enjoying every second, my virtual friend :)

I saw a list of Kate Bush’s 10 favourite LPs. For your pleasure was one of them. I’ve also read her say there was one point in her life where she couldn’t get enough of listening to Ferry’s voice.

Very satisfying breakdown of a very interesting track. The opening sax is ridiculously cool and unenexpected. It is a track I had not heard before and very much enjoyed. I didn't know Roxy Music had this type of music in their cache. Thanks.

@@lemming9984 I absolutely prefer the earlier work, but I love the stuff after Siren too. I just view them as two separate bands, which helps reconcile the change that took place after Siren for me.

Sax and oboe by Mackay make this eerie and hypnotic...Manzaneras guitar adds frightening intensity. Now in 2023 it still grips and gives a rush and goosebumps. Simon Artley Manchester

Funny you should say that about the matcha color because I'm painting a lampshade a gorgeous wasabi/avacado/matcha tone while listening to you react to Strictly Confidential. This was always one of my favorite songs because Bryan goes even further into his dramatic vocal style. The opening line cannot be listened to without smiling and almost giggling at the drama of it all:)) I've loved them since being a teenager in the late 70s, and still to this day they sound no less interesting and mesmerizing than they did back then.

Thank you for your comments, very accurate. Ferry was quite young when he wrote this song. I could be written by a man in my age 65 🙂 Its such a stong song with hunting lyrics. And Mckay and Manzanera is one of a kind.

I'm a lifelong Roxy music fan. Lately I have been obsessing over this song. That is what brought me here to find this wonderfully unexpected surprise. The way you do what your doing here is beyond enjoyable to me. You, my friend are highly intuitive, highly intelligent, highly insightful you have great taste ad a great ear for music and you are anything but stereotypical In any way. The first time I listened to "For Your Pleasure" (and to Roxy Music as well, of course I knew Bryan Ferry's eighties stuff, still...) back in 1992, it was on a tape which wasn't rewinded at the beginning of side 1, so when I pressed 'play' I heard "Strictly Confidential" and I thought to myself : was is that?? This is so weird! The vocals, the oboe, the dissonant guitar tones, etc. I hated it at first. But after a few listens and a bit of persistence, I gradually came to love the whole album and the band. And since then I became a big fan of Roxy Music, they're so special, so creative...

More early Roxy! Their first two albums are avant-garde rock at its best. Their next three albums are fantastic classics as well. Their evolution from album one to five is staggering. Viva is great as well. To me, after Siren, Roxy wasn’t Roxy anymore. There are plenty of great moments on the later, reunited Roxy albums, but the band just became Bryan’s backing band. The music is lush and romantic, but the spark of danger and mystery was gone.

The first Roxy albums should be listened to as a whole. To Get a sense of the variation from track to track. Still it makes a logical whole.

Bryan Ferry wrote from the future. Like he was already an old man. So his music still sounds like it’s from the future.

The mental state of the narrator is schizophrenic. A schizophrenic on the edge, struggling with serious thoughts of suicide. The narrator does get through the evening. But it’s a nightly struggle. And perhaps the narrator is writing to himself, rather than an identified recipient. The schizophrenic mental state was one Ferry seemed to inhabit and write about from time to time. One of the clues the narrator makes it through the evening is the line “until the cloak of evening shadow/ Changes to mantle of the dawn” It’s to do with the comparison and weight impact of the words cloak / mantle. Mantle is more authoritative. Mantle is both a garment of clothing (a cloak) and an important role or responsibility that passes from one person to another (the son has now assumed his fathers mantle). So Ferry/ the narrator is implying that mantle of the dawn is a more important line than cloak of evening shadow, by the use of this more important word. The narrator still has some desire to hold on til the morning. That Ferry could choose his words so carefully is not in doubt. Chris Thomas, the producer of many early Roxy records, who also worked on the white album and never mind the bollocks amongst many other said Ferry was the best English lyricist of the 70’s.

Chris Thomas also produced John Cale's "Paris 1919" (masterpiece), a few Procol Harum, Pretenders and INXS albums, Sex Pistols' "Nevermind the Bollocks", etc. What a brilliant producer

What a toe tapper. I had to relisten after the analysis especially lyric dive. Perfect pandemic blues song. We have had to wonder if, a lot about the possibility of a quick death from viral cause. It has both spurred me forward at a frantic pace and stopped me in my tracks to relax and enjoy what is left. Seems this tune is of a more self inflicting nature but it captures the need to explain or just say the real story, to those who might care enough to read it. Heavy trip today. Find a way to be kinder today, not everyone is what they seem and do something nice for yourself. Peace and tearful Music

I just wanted to write that this is, for me, the best Roxy Music song I've heard so far (I'm discovering). Then you say that this makes you think of VDGG. Makes sense as VDGG is one of my all-time favorites.

The Welsh 90s RM are SFA ok. Try Mountain People or the the whole of Guerilla for starters. Or just try their greatest hits 45rpm songbook collection for a glimpse of their eclectic attitude approach and atmospheres. Alternatively, try Slow Life or The first six songs from Hey Venus. This song reminded me of em a little bit, but they’re their own band. Happy Weekend jp. I refer of course to Super Furry Animals. ⚽️⁉️

It sounds odd to have a band described in terms of those that came after. For me, Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay were the musically interesting members of the line up, whilst Bryan Ferry's mannered delivery was ear-catching but paled with repetition. I enjoyed the first two or three albums before the tendency to 'sleek and lush' pushed me away.

Just between you and me, on the down-low. I'm envious of that green tea! But I ruminate, when I should alliterate. Such a sad, somber suicidal song. Should, seek psychiatric solace soon. But I can't cross the sound the Ferry's down. Oh well, I'll have to drive the long way around. The mental health clinic is on the other side of the water, Downtown. Peace .

Hi JP, L ve your video! You are missing a wildly different Roxy Music live (Viva)early in their career live. The phrasing of Bryan's lyrics, Paul Thompson's drums, synth sounds, and the memorable violin and oboe playing to ecstatic fans. Stand outs are If there is Something, Every Dreamboat a heartache, Out of the Blue, and the pairing of Chance Meeting and Both Ends Burning. It's sounds and feels like you are in the front row!
