I've been a fan of Roy's for years (since figuring out he was an unsung hero in the background of so many of those great Springsteen recordings). Out of the Box is a great CD in it's own right. (Also, re: the folks going in and out of the porta-potties in the background on this video. Nice touch!)

A great keyboardest-musician is a redundancy, because a keyboardist, more than any other instrumentalist, takes in and embraces the whole range of musical understanding and expression, he must be an orchestra unto himself. But again, that is only if he is a *great* keyboardist. And those are relatively few. A great guitarist or a great drummer or trumpeter must be great at their instrument, and be at least *very good* at music per se, to be a *great* guitarist, drummer, trumpeter… but a *great keyboardist* must be skilled enough at the instrument that that skill may actually become boring: the greatness is in the musicianship that embraces all the other instruments, and all the musical ideas, conveyed through the instrument that imitates all others. This is why Roy Bittan can be surrounded by such undeniable excellence as these other musicians bring, but he is the natural EPICENTER, and center of gravity, of the group they form. In fact, it’s exactly what you see in Paul Shaeffer (no comparisons or ranking please, it’s not the point): the expert keyboardist takes in the whole music, he becomes the natural nucleus. Always this way since Bach, Mozart, Beethoven when the composer would improvise on the figured bass at the keyboard, providing an inner core upon which all the other musicians are layered. The very same dynamic here. Mr. Bittan, you’re one of the greats!!!

should've got some behind the piano shots just like the springsteen videos...a classic roy bittan performance wouldn't be complete without it :)

Who are the other musicians? The drummer definitely seems to have a certain flair, but I admit I’m no connoisseur! They all seem like pros, but the drummer (besides Mr. Bittan of course) is the only one I feel confident saying is a virtuoso. (Editing this in later: the guy on the sunburst finish guitar seems pretty masterly as well!). But they all seem pretty top notch to me.
