as i watch this fight 25 years later I can't help but to notice that Toney did not use his jab enough. He should have been doubling and tripling his jab all night to get inside of Jones and push him back up to the ropes where Roy was vulnerable. Jones was masterful punching backwards. One of the few guys who could knock you out going backwards. If he's on the ropes you take that trait away.
@Kaikojo2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I'm much more familiar with RJJ than Toney, but RJJ nullified a lot of jabs with the leaping left. Normally the jab would be faster so you had to time the hook, but RJJ's flying hook was ridiculously fast AND he could time it, so it acted as a check hook. For southpaws, he'd switch to the straight with head movement to counter the jab. I could be wrong, but I fee like while other fighters' try to establish the jab early, RJJ's game plan is to dismantle the jab early.

If someone has slow motion maybe you can give me your opinion. Watch at the end of the 5th, it's 27:25 when Roy sits on his stool. I see something going on there in his corner but I'm not accusing anyone. Watch the older white guy on Roy's right. He's got a big towel, Roy gets water on his head then the white guy gives Roy the towel to wipe the water from his face. Keep focus on the white man there with the white smock, Roy's assistant. He says something low that I can't hear, Roy takes a quick look at the guy at 27:37. This man has something in his left hand, I can't tell what it is but there's something protruding from whatever the man's holding. It looks like a thick roll of gauze with a plastic spoon or something, that's a rough description but I don't know what it really is. The guy kind of holds it toward Roy like he wants Roy to see it or take it and he has Roy's attention. I only noticed this because Roy and this man are acted a bit awkwardly at this time. The man mumbles something again , then watch at 27:44 when Roy turns to look at the guy. They're not actiong casually IMO. They're looking at each other as if something is going on. Just then they cut to a replay of the last round, right when something was going to happen. Just as they cut to go to a replay, Roy's trainer says twice ' give him some water'.........but 5 seconds earlier he just gave Roy some water so why is he saying it again? I have a strong sense that the man wanted to give something to Roy, Roy wanted to get whatever it was, yet they were uncomfortable about transferring whatever it was to Roy, I think you get the idea. There's nothing definite that I've seen but I'm pretty sure something odd was happening. I'll watch again after the next round,.......?????

That Ref really destroyed the true nature of this fight. He was breaking them up in the first 2 seconds of any clench and he must have dementia or something to being taking the 10 second clap notice for the damn bell. He should never be allowed to ref another serious fight ever again. Tony's unbeaten record surely deserved a better chance at this fight than what he was given.

@MrMarco8553 жыл бұрын
The called knockdown in the 3rd round was bullshit. The left hook landed but Jones's forward momentum made him land on Toney, that's what forced Toney back, not the punch. Jones didn't land that hook with his glove, he hit Toney with his wrist and his glove was wide of Toney's face by a few inches. Toney wasn't going anywhere but he was in an awkward position when Jones landed on him with his body. It wasn't easy to see in real time but I replayed it several times in slow motion. Toney did an unbelivable job keeping his butt off of the mat aftrer the collision. He took 3 or 4 steps straight back in a sitting position and maintained himself until he hit the ropes. Through 3 rounds not much has happened, Jones has touched him up here and there but nothing to brag about. Same with Toney, he only landed a few so-so shots himself. I thought Jones won easy but it hasn't been like that yet.
