Born in ‘65, I grew up in the ‘70s. I think it’s fair to say that no other writer had a greater impact on me than Roy Thomas. He laid the literary foundation that other writers built on. He gave me a strong vocabulary even as a child. As a kid, I never really paid any attention to any name in the credits except Stan Lee’s. As an adult, I have gone back and asked myself “Who REALLY worked this magic?” And, when it comes to writing, the answer is very, VERY often “Roy Thomas.” I hope to someday shake his hand and thank him. Failing that, I hope he sees this comment and knows that there are tens of thousands of people just like me. Thank you, Roy, for filling my childhood with adventure and with characters I loved like my own family.

Roy Thomas is hands down my favorite comic book creator. He was the first writer who I followed from comic to comic (artists being easy to follow by look had the drawback of their name not needing to be known; thats came later). And his works never failed to entertain me; in fact he's still my favorite comic writer bar none. He also is why I got into history even straight through the college level. The Invaders got me interested in the facts of WW2, despite it being a topic everywhere back then in movies and TV, and years later All-Star Squadron got me to expand that to interest in homefront details. Great interview thanks for making and uploading this.

Anytime Marvel is mentioned everyone thinks - and deservedly so - Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and Jack Kirby. I believe Jim Shooter, Archie Goodwin, and Roy Thomas belong on this list, too.

My Mom was a teacher she brought comic book time into her classroom to help develop interest in reading ,she liked when I would ask her what the big words meant

I love Roy Thomas. Conan alone is enough for me to like him, but he worked alongside legends and has great stories about them and he strikes me as kind and honest.

Great interview. Roy is always interesting and a really nice guy. I had emailed him last year and he gave me some pointers into some research books I was looking for about Timely/Atlas/Marvel.

Roy is most polite man i met in my life... I met him in Paris accidentally in Comicon two years ago ... didn't know at that time his gonna be there ... the line of people waiting for signing was unbelievable ... so i come to him, and told bad joke : i thought you're died long time ago xD And he start to laughing loud... so we speak 10 - 15 minutes , then i saw people who is pissed waiting , and i remove myself to not get beaten by fans crowd in time xD its a good memory! :D

I remember reading in an issue of Comic Book Artist how Roy said the Goodmans took him to dinner to run their 70s' Atlas company but he refused and stayed loyal to Marvel. Lo and behold I read the Winter 1980 issue of The Comics Journal two days ago and saw Roy (who was leaving Marvel for DC so was venting on Marvel) say that he sought out Martin Goodman about possibly going to Atlas, and he also claimed Stan "never read" the comics. I wish more journalists would investigate these things instead of just the same ol narrative...

Will you be adding this interviews to the podcast? I notice that the Dixon, Groth and Fleener interviews still haven't made it to the podcast feed.

This is when being self-deprecating is detrimental. Anyone who has read those old comics knows that Roy Thomas took them to another level, and that his stories were far superior to the stories prior. Particularly his work with Neal Adams on the X-men. Those issues stand the test of time and can compete with all of the modern Marvel stories. To me, Roy Thomas is Marvel more so than even Stan Lee.

THOR--To this day no one has written that book with theme of mythology vocabulary like RT. You thought you was reading scriptures in King James.
