Royal 501 Original Dirt Devil Vacuum Review

Here's a review of the royal 501 Blue Devil handheld vacuum these really are a lot better than the modern Red Plastic in it are surprisingly quiet the run and have a very strong brush roll. One of those items that they really don't make like they used to. . .

Hi where can one find the disposable paper bags or retrofit a commonly available disposable bags

We have the 501 (blue) and the 103 (red). Both never had a filter installed and you just shook the fabric bag to empty. Did the 501 originally come with a paper filter bag? I just ordered some for our 501.

Any idea what size bags the blue Royal 501 takes, and if yes, where to buy? (I wasn't sure if Dirt Devil bags would fit.)

@@barbe.1556 The bags for the 501 that I ordered would not fit. They apparently mis-represented what models they would fit. I returned them. The correct bags do show up for sale from time to time on ebay, but the prices are ridiculous. I guess I'll stick with emptying the cloth bags as intended.

Awesome video review of the Royal Prince 501 Hand Vacuum! -- I've long been a fan of the Dirt Devil Hand Vacs & recently acquired two Royal Prince 501's and I've fallen in love with these vintage all-metal Royal hand vacuums. -- Like you said, *They Aren't Screaming Loud Like So Many Of The Newer Bagless-Style Vacuums!* I can't stand that crazy obnoxious high-pitched ear-splitting whine of Dyson's & others similar vacuums. - Not to mention: *They Simply Don't Build 'Em Like They Used To!* - These metal Royal hand vacuums (and the metal Royal uprights, too!) are built like *TANKS* compared to all of the modern-day vacuums that get mass-manufactured out of cheap, injection-molded plastics. Heck, production of these metal Royal hand vacs began somewhere around 1965 & production didn't end until 1996, around the time when TTI acquired the Royal and Dirt Devil brands... But the phenomenal thing is that the majority of these metal Royal Hand vacs really don't need much but a good cleaning & some lubrication on the two main motor bearings, and they're good to go (as long as the previous owners didn't completely neglect them). It's just a damn shame that replacement brush rolls & fans are so hard to come-by nowadays... At least some of the standard Dirt Devil brush rolls are still compatible with the Royal 501's, as long as you can find a brush roll w/ the eccentric (height-adjustable) ends - and have the rubber end-caps necessary for them to fit in the cast aluminum nozzle housing of the Royal 501. All in all, the Royal Prince 501 is truly an *Awesome* hand vacuum! Thanks for the awesome video! I truly enjoyed hearing from someone who loves their Royal 501's as much as I do! ~Justin in Chicago

The very first Royal Prince hand vacuum dates back to 1937, although that first one probably was only a straight-suction model.

I have the same thing! Mine was built in July 1982. I see yours, though, was built in August 1995.

Pretty decent hand vacuums. I had one just like yours. I believe the armature went bad in it. I may get another one some day. They take type H bags. They just simply line the inside of the shake-out cloth bag.

@TJ You could try it, but I don't know if the collar on the 'H' bag would work. I think it may be smaller than the Dirt Devil.

yup Royal = Dirt Devil I grew up and still work in a sewing machine and vacuum shop that my mom owns, Idk if I still have any of it left but damnit I wish I kept it but it was a Kirby vacuum with a Dremel attachment and a grinder attachment along with a few other attachments. Right now I use a riccar squire, riccar butler and the riccar supra quick. I like the squire and butler the most. Btw Catus do you collect vacuums? Would you like an amazing deal on a Kenmore sewing machine for basically the cost of shipping? I don't mind sending you sewing machines that are just sitting around that were left behind by customers that didn't wanna pay for the repair or have it repaired. I'll send you a couple new belts on the house. New kirbys are going for over $3000!!! but you can get them down to about $1000, Kirby hires anyone that will pound on doors, I have had customers tell me about them coming inside their house asking to use the restroom and steal stuff while the other guy was doing the demo.
