Overview of the Royal Australian Navy ships at Fleet Base East in May 2022 (ahead of the Indo Pacific 2022 international maritime exposition). The naval base, also known as HMAS Kuttabul, is located in downtown Sydney, close to the iconic Opera House.
=====================
Several ships were in base on 8 May 2022:
- HMAS Choules (L100), a Bay-class landing ship that served with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) from 2006 to 2011, before being procured by the RAN.
- HMAS Sydney (42) and HMAS Brisbane (41), two of the three Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers, fitted with the AEGIS combat system.
- HMAS Canberra (L02), one of the two LHDs in the RAN fleet. Canberra also serves as flagship.
- HMAS Arunta (151), an ANZAC-class frigate.

When I look back on my own Navy days in the 1950's, when the wharves at Garden Island were three deep with warships and this was Australia's main naval base, one wonders at the paucity of today's fleet.

Modern warships are much more expensive than they used to be. Also there are a lot more on deployment at once which is why there are so few at Garden Island currently.

Those 2 AWD's would easily destroy our entire 1950's fleet. I will agree that we should have atleast 3 more of them.

The navy is significantly larger now than in the 1950s. It is amongst the 15-20 most powerful navies in the world. Need to still scale up even further given threats in Asia, but let’s not pretend it was ever any better than now.

There’s 9 Hunter class Frigates being built, some Arunta class OPVs that will take some of the policing and pacific assist missions off the blue water ships.

@ToxicTentacles Tell me you get all your facts from ABC news, there is no threat to Australia, if China tried to attack Aus right now there would be no need for allied assistance, they’d not make it within 200kms of Australia you need a Bluewater navy not a normal navy to invade a nation, you need a HUGE Bluewater fleet to invade or attack Australia only america comes close to this capability. If we were at any serious risk to our country we’d have those 3 extra destroyers but we’d also buy American and uk ships as Interim ships, we are safe mate don’t worry. PS the us would always defend us not because they’re our ally it’s because Australia is an incredibly vital ally to America, whoever controls Australia controls the indo pacific and the pacific, and most of the Asian pacific, if we need those waters closed they’ll be closed.

Q. Should the Royal Navy base HMS Prince of Wales, its full escort and support vessels, RFA, there? It would make sense to work with a joint RAN/RN Fleet for the Pacific Region.

Not sure what you think he got wrong as he didn't say much but Hobarts are an F100 variant, F110s are just starting construction.

Not exactly the haul and propulsion system a copy. Australia version has better radar sonars system Aegis combat systems added and equipped with ESSM block 2 sea sparrow SM2 SM6 and tomahawk missile. They also equipped with 2x3 torpedo tubes and 8 new Norwegian long range anti ship missiles. It's basically an lightweight Alright Burk class destroyer using the F100 hull design. The F110 is Spain newest version and is just getting built now.

Ahh if only Australia had of bought a developed version of the Hobart or even joined the US and build the same model of the Fremm instead of that money pit known as the Hunter class. I'm sure both Navantia and Fincantieri would have agreed to licensing the designs for construction in Australia. They would have likely been in the water much quicker too. Australia needs hulls now and in the next few years not in 2031 when the first is tentatively scheduled to be delivered, which is probably ambitious.

@@johnyeomans7262 that's all fine and dandy, but the problem as you know is thing's are heating up in that part of the world and the RAN could use more capable ships now. Even a follow on order to the Hobart's of another three vessel's would be a very welcome boost, to numbers and the capability they would bring.
@aussienscale
@aussienscale 2 жыл бұрын
🤣 You do realise that both those options lost out to the BAE Hunter class bid don't you ? The Navantia F5000 was a repainted, watered down version of the Hobarts based on a hull design that dated back to the US OHP's, the engineering was old and outdated and the actual platform did not meet our requirements. Neither did the Fremm ! Funny thing about platform selection, it is based on our needs and requirements, not a perceived popularity contest or based on what other countries require, it is not that simple !
