Hey Jay we're on Icon right now 21-28 Sept sailing. You hit the nail on the head! Captain came on yesterday and told us there was a maintenance issue and we would be cruising at a slower speed. So yes they added an extra sea day and took St Thomas off the intenerary. We still made it to St Maarten this morning just fine and they scheduled us an extra 1.5 hours there (7 vs 5:30pm gangway uo) . I think they handled this issue absolutelybgreat. They quickly refunded us back a full day of our sailing along with any excursions we had in St Thomas. For the most part everyone seems to be really chill. No revolts lol. Personally I'm totally OK with an extra sea day. This boats absolutely incredible and the crew has gone beyond our expectations to make sure we're having a good trip! She's still very new and with something this large and complex there's going to be some things that come up unfortunately. We still have Co Co Cay in 2 more days. It is a major bummer for the passengers of the next cruise.

People love to bring Carnival into a conversation no matter what it is. This was a vid about Royal yet we have to b reminded of Carnival. Well Royal learned from Carnival mistake and bad press therefore they did better by taking their ship out of service. Lets just pray they can fix the issue in 1 week and not have an ongoing issue like Vista.

While the compensation appears good, it would be nice if the passengers were given the option to rebook the Icon in the same room category at the same rate they paid for the canceled cruise as prices have soared for many sailings.

That would be fair if they just refunded your money. But what you CAN do is combine the future cruise credit along with the refund and book another trip soon at the inflated rate. You would still have a couple hundred bucks left over as an inconvenience adjustment. I mean it would be best if there were no interruption, but in the big picture I think RC was more than fair. I am comforted in believing that if this issue was caused by a single person's negligence, he was certainly fired.

@@tduck828 When they cancelled Carnival Vista about a month ago, we received the same deal. We turned around and went from balconies on the Vista to Havana Cabana porches on the Mardi Gras. Bigger ship and better room which we were able to book because of the future cruise credit we received with our 100% refund. Hopefully with the increase in prices, people who have to rebook can use that future cruise credit to get the same cat room or even better. It's a punch in the stomach to be cancelled.

I think ships in the past were over engineered to cover any dreamed up contingency. Redundant systems, manual backups, etc. Now in the race to be the biggest, baddest ship on the sea they are rushing the design process and cutting back to what is required by the Coast Guard. On a behind the scenes tour years ago they had 3 generators that could each supply the ship with the needed power on its own. The rush is not the building of the ship, but the designing of the ship. Sun Princess suffered from it too.

They have not gone out their way. People bought Icon for $4000 and now they would have pay $7000. Carnival didnt totally cancel a few days before the sailing. It changed ports that happens all the time. Weather and propulsion on ALL cruise lines are the usual culprits including Royal. Didn't they just throw everyone off the ship in Canada or somewhere on Royal. When they did actually cancel they offered the exact same deal. So Royal copied Canival. The refund deal is online for Vista. Same exact deal This Royal halo, Carnival horns is always interesting

EXACTLY. When Carnival refund at least u can rebook with that refunded cruise price and get another cruise with FCC. Not with Royal, whereas those folks probably booked BEFORE Royal started skyrocketing their prices so its gonna take both the refund AND the FCC to rebook that cruise. People wont see that bc Royal 😇 Carnival 😈.

Hey J. My friend is currently on the Icon. He posted mechanical issues. They went to the 1st port. Cancelled the rest and slowly making their way hopefully to Cococay. He said they were adequately refunded. He lives in Tampa so no flight. And the next sailing as you say cancelled. Could you imagine dreaming and finally getting on the Icon for that to happen. And Utopia with temporarily interrupted A/C. Wow. They need to take these time. These new ships are costly and will continue to be costly if they have to be giving refunds and FCC cruises.

It sucks for the passengers of that cruise but I applaud Royal for offering a refund and a 100% voucher for next sailing. Carnival should learn from this and they won't have to deal with cruisers revolting. I wonder if the ones who had to fly in could use their credit card travel disruption or not. Please chime in and let me know in case this happens to us next year.

A power failure. It could be o ne of many new technologies used on the ship that failed. An example, I was on Quantom of the Seas maiden Carabian voyage, and the North Star broke down with us stuck in the air. It took time be we got down. New technology and new ways of using it sometimes fail.

Is it wrong as a fan of Royal's smaller (and cheaper... for now) ships to laugh at the mechanical issues of Bayley and Liberty's shiny new $2 billion floating manhood extender? Good on them for taking care of the affected customers, but maybe this is a wakeup call that bigger isn't necessarily better if a ship that isn't even nine months in service is needing to cancel sailings for mechanical issues. Speaking of nine months, it's been almost that long since the phrase "Project Discovery" was first uttered publicly in early January and we haven't heard one damn thing about it. New Icon class ships announced, new upcharge beach clubs announced, but not even a broad idea of the size and expected pax load since we heard the name.

They sold us all on a ICON of the Seas cruise to the Dominican Republic in June 2025 while we were onboard Wonders of the Seas in June 2024. In August 2024, we were told that ICON of the Seas cannot stop in the Dominican Republic as the port is not equipped for a ship of that size. Then why would they advertise this cruise? Royal is Scamming cruisers.

Royal announced they will be going to a 2nd destination in the DR called Cabo Rojo in 2025. I believe the port area is currently being built, but says Oasis of the seas will be porting there. So if Oasis can, I'm sure Icon can.

I was on the sailing on Utopia on the 16th. The power outage was really mildly inconvenient. The bigger problem was that they did not have enough cups for everyone who purchased a beverage package. I spent 4 days trying to get a cup, they said they were going to restock on day 3 and I still couldn’t get one. They did give me a full refund though.

I have been on all the major lines except for Disney so now I have 2 lines I will not go on CCL and Disney.

But if you didn't buy the package at first you can't get the drink package for that price. Screw a Royal Caribbean! A lot of people are leaving formal complaints with the desk! Make a video on them being selective on who they give the drink package 2 while we are stuck at sea. Shame on Royal Caribbean

As you mentioned, I see this as no different than when you buy a new car. There is a likelihood you will have a recall to fix something. I applaud RCCL for ponying up full refunds and FCC's. Feel bad for those missing their vacation. But it isn't a total loss. Heck, you may have time to get on something else and have a free cruise in your pocket to use later.

Excellent, well researched, vlog. In August my wife and I sailed from Southampton to Norway x 7 days. Overall it was a superb cruise holiday and we loved visiting Norway, but we were very disappointed with the food in the Windjammer buffet. Most dishes were lukewarm, over cooked and tasted very salty. The staff were doing a fantastic job but were struggling to cope with the maximum capacity of passengers. We got totally fed up with staff walking around the ship with clipboards trying to sell us meal packages in pay for restaurants. The ship was obviously not designed to cope with 7,000+ passengers 🫢🛳️⚓️

It had an engine room fire a couple months ago probably had something to do with that, both of those ships (icon and utopia) are LNG powered and it seems whoever designed those systems for royal they are having issues with it, other cruise lines use LNG and dont have issues like this

I dj on a small local river “cruise ship” (300 passengers). There are mechanical issues with it all the time. I can’t imagine how many issues they deal with - and how quickly they must resolve them with only a few hours between sailings. I’m amazed things like this don’t happen more often. Kudos to Royal for their generous reimbursement!

These Mega Ships are complex entities that have millions of individual parts. Getting everything working properly and together is a monumental engineering and logistics puzzle. So it's not surprising that there are problems. I would love to see the full life cycle cost of one of these behemoths. In the end it would be interesting to see if they actually turn a profit or are the proverbial white elephants.
