@scott gibbs. I bought my first car in 2015 which is an old 60's beetle. Easy to fix, no frills, and cheap. Way cheaper than my mom's Ford vehicles which are horrible gas guzzlers. It works, easy to fool around with and modify, no need to bring to the VW official shop (who wont bother with you anyway). No need for all the funny frills that go into a lot of the new cars that you won't be able to prolong at least cost. Nothing but simple mechanical beauty and simplicity. Its slow, reliable, makes funny noises, and vibrates in special ways. Hmmm sounds like an Enfield Classic.

Great review! I've had my Classic 500 for 18 months, and I love her! Good old fashioned motorcycling. She's an A road/ B road thumper, not some modern road rocket. but that's the appeal to me. As the reporter said, she attracts so much attention from people, I've lost count of the number of occasions she's been photographed (I live in England) by old boys who used to ride Enfields or any old British motorcycle. Such a conversation starter! One old fella used to ride Enfields as a despatch rider in WW2 (but admitted he preferred BSA's) :-) Altogether, this machine is a no nonsence old style riding experience with some 21st Century tweaks to help your experience. If you want some Japanese spaceship with no heart or soul, walk on!
@diteamiciedentrate8 жыл бұрын
I do love this bike and other RE too, Moto Guzzi is in my hearth, I pray to have Gilera back... yet to think that japanese bikes have no heart and no soul is pure ignorance. The biker put the soul in his bike, not the manifacturer, even less the country. Ride happy ;)

@@keeratsoch2485 not everyone can afford a Royal Enfield. I am an Indian and I have 2 royal Enfields. One is a Thunderbird and another 350 electra. Most people here buy bikes that give a lot of mileage. Here RE 500 classic costs 185,000 INR on road price. Most people buy bikes that cost a third of it. So your argument is very wrong when you are saying 1 million out of a billion is very low. Because majority of people are not well enough.
@jeffslade18928 жыл бұрын
Small but important correction - the Lee-Enfield rifle came out of the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield (a royal ordnance factory), not the Enfield Cycle Company (Royal Enfield) in Redditch 125 miles away. Although as an engineering firm the Enfield Cycle Co (1893, 1851 as Townsend making sewing needles and bicycles) did make what we would now call 'defence components' (hence the brand name), they are unrelated factories.

This is more of an iron horse with ride characteristics similar to riding one. So, while this bike may not have rocking performance numbers, it does have a thumping cylinder that will find takers who may find it easier than riding a horse. In other words, if you enjoy riding a horse you may well enjoy riding this classic.

@jeffslade18926 жыл бұрын
Nor is the 500 extra long stroke - it's 84x90, just under-square and just 1mm different to the 85x89 DB34 Gold Star, its one-time off-road competition, but the Bullet-J2 had more torque for slogging up hills. The 350cc Bullet is however the same stroke, making that one is definitely long-stroke.

good question, what the most expensive to make, disk or drum?...why they kept the drum at the back? for old fashioned looking i guess, or it's really the drum cheaper to make.
@brando6BL8 жыл бұрын
Depends, I guess, on whether we're talking about a hydraulically operated disc or a cable type and the costings thereof. Either way I reckon the rear disc may cost more than a rod-actuated drum brake. I'd be interested to know if the 'modern' Enfields are oil-tight. As the past owner of several "Royal Oilfields" during my youth in England - everything from a Crusader Sport 250 to a Constellation 700, via a 350 Bullet - I don't remember any of them that kept the oil on the inside for very long.. It'd be a good reason to stick with a rear drum brake given that disc brakes and oil don't go together well.
@Plentisaki8 жыл бұрын
I've had my Enfield for coming up to two years now, and it's never 'marked it's territory' by leaving oil on the tarmac. It is oil-tight and is a 'flies-on-the-teeth' pleasure to ride! :-) I do love the Royal Oilfields description you use for old Enfields though!! :-D
