Royal Enfield Meteor 350 - 1600 Mile Review and Final Ride

Hi Brahn, thanks for the comment and good question. Really the 3-4 points about this bike not being ideal for longer distances and touring are why I'm swapping it, I like to ride for 150+ miles in a day and the bike isn't really made for that (though it is perfect at what it was designed to do). I also injured my back a few months ago so I have gone for something designed for max comfort over longer distance with the ability to carry luggage as well. Hope that answers the question. Cheers.

@@MindfulMotorcyclist I must say I have managed over 100 on a day run without any discomfort. I was quite surprised. What I have discovered is that the riding position makes one sit upright, which as one gets older and one tends to stoop too much is a good thing. Personally my leg length, around 30/31 for trousers, fits the riding position quite well. As for luggage carrying. this bike was designed for the Indian home market. I reckon it can carry the family, and the kitchen sink. With the nice low gearing at the bottom end I reckon this bke could be ideal for towing a small trailer.

A good review, except for the touring comments. As any MZ Rider who toured on an MZ 125 or 250 will tell you the secret is to set off early and just carry on steadily. Decent racks are available for the Meteor, so a top box is easily fitted and if throw over pannier bags are not used then fitting something like Craven panniers will not be difficult. Ring position is upright. Great for the posture. As for the servicing intervals. By the looks of it DIY is straight forward. By all means cough up for the initial and 3000 and 6000 mile services. If anything is going to go really wrong it should have done by then. Mine manages 90mpg +. No problems with 150 mile day runs. Reckon I could double that with an earlier off. 50/55 mph good speed, and yes forget about overtaking all and sundry. By the way lower speeds are less tiring so you need to stop less often so average speed tends to be much the same as with bigger bikes. Ken Craven (of pannier fame) discovered that with his organised tours in the 1950s when the 250 scooters he reluctantly took on a tour after many requests tended to arrive at destinations before the 500s as they stopped less. I did 50 000 miles on my last bike over 22 years. Hope I manage the same on my Meteor. At least it will mean I reach 97!

150 miles at 60 mph = 2hrs 30min. 150 miles at 70 = 2 hrs 8min so 22 min difference, @60 you arrive less tired and stressed than at 70, better fuel consumption and so on . Is it really worth doing the extra 10 mph? Just my pennies worth 😀😀

Hi Alistair, thanks for the comment. Agreed, much better to do 60. On my last long trip I noted the fuel consumption difference between 85kph and 130kph (maximum speed in France). It was quite dramatic, I think ranging between 3.9l/100km and 6l/100km. Thanks.

Where things get really good is taking 3 hours @ 50mph. Because those are going to be completely different roads, almost certainly more enjoyable on any motorbike. Doubly so on something like the RE. KZbin is full of Indian adventurers flogging these things and showing us westerners we've lost site of what motorcycling can be.

Hi John, I remember your Brown Supernova! Delivered about a month after mine. I have to admit I really like to keep bikes out of the weather if possible. I try not to leave the house if it looks awful but I've been caught out a few times with showers or water on the road. I guess that's why mine looked OK on the underside. Regarding service intervals, it is 6000 miles for the UK - 3000 is for India and some other region - also confirmed by my local RE Dealer. Tripper - app has been updated removing many of the issues stated in this video. Great review, shame it will be the last on the Meteor.

I think that this is the best Meteor owners review I have found on youtube 👍👍👍 In the unlikely event RE decide to have a service agent in the north of Scotland (rather than 3 dealers 250 miles away 😭) I could definitely see myself buying one of these. I still cannot see why the Classic 350 models are all £250-£400 more than the equivalent Meteor variants. I also cannot figure out why RE does not give us the option of standard mid-mounted pegs on the Meteor or pannier racks for the near side. I would imagine the rack would just be a mirror image of the off side one.

Hi C Cooper, thanks a lot for the comment and for the good feedback. I'm not yet an experienced reviewer so this is great to hear. Ah that is a shame they don't have a service agent near you, especially as the service interval is relatively short at 300 miles, 3000 miles, 6000 miles etc. I ordered mine unseen and wasn't disappointed and I suppose you could do servicing at a local specialist using RE genuine parts and I don't think that would void your warranty, though this point is hotly debated amongst owners. I must admit I haven't looked into the Classic pricing in detail but in general RE pricing has increased (when I purchased my Meteor it was £3.9k OTR with no discounts it's now closer to £4.3k for the equivalent). The Classic is to me just a Meteor with a more retro style package and perhaps a different level of comfort (some say less comfortable). Perhaps they looked at the demand for the Meteor 350 being so high over the last 12 months and calculated that the Classic 350 would fly out of the showrooms at the price they set. Regarding the RE pannier rack on the right hand side that is apparently because in the bikes home market of India a sari guard is fitted as standard to protect a pillion I assume and so they didn't develop the rack and pannier box. That said, there are now aftermarket options which mirror the off side one as you say and also you can now buy complete pairs of racks/rails and fit whatever luggage you like. If you see my Top 5 accessories video you'll see the RE genuine pannier box up close and it's not that nice in my opinion, perhaps aftermarket is better. Not sure on mid mounted pegs I'm afraid! You only need to do the first service to keep your factory warranty its the dealers warranty that may be different but i had it in detail that the bikes were designed to be simple to service and you only have to have the first done at the dealer you still have a faulty parts warranty from the manufacturer even if you home service it as long as bad servicing hasn’t damaged it

I have similar mileage on mine. I cruise on the motorway at between 65 and 70 mph . I have the standard screen fitted and a screen extension which overcomes the problem described . I fitted a Givi top box and when needed I have soft luggage from Hitchcocks I travelled 250 miles mostly on the A! last Saturday without any problems . This is a good bike. If you want something faster buy the650

Hi Peter, thanks for the comment. Please don't get me wrong I absolutely love the Meteor and the owners groups are made up of some great people. I agree with you it is a 'good' bike I would even go further and say excellent bike. The luggage is an option and it's true that more and more aftermarket options are out there now for the Meteor, it has taken some time for them to get to the market. I'm glad you overcame the buffeting with a windscreen extension, I am going this route on my new bike. With respect to cruising at 70mph this is where I would respectfully disagree, as I don't think travelling at nearly the maximum speed of the bike could be classed as cruising. Of course it could be the fact that mine was a little down on power or something individual to mine so that's always a possibility. Thanks!

The 650 Meteor is due for release in 2023 using the Interceptor engine :).. that should fix the tour and overtaking issues.

Hi Terry, thanks for the comment, yes the air filter (is it intake as well?) mod seems to provide about 2 extra bhp which is a lot for a bike with 20bhp. It's been positively received on the Facebook group. Glad you've had a good experience with it.

Great video. I bought the Meteor for the mag wheels, although I do like the classic. I was thinking of removing the rear seat but looking at an Indian clip it looks like the cabal for the rear light runs through the mudguard. The classic on the other hand lets you run with a solo seat without a cabal showing.

Hi Terry, thanks for the comment! I like both the Meteor and the Classic but I guess they are a little too similar for me to go from one to the other. I have seen some owners remove the rear seat and replace it with a metal plate to secure luggage. That didn't look too bad! It does also give a cleaner look if you run with a rear pillion seat but without the backrest, which is easily removed. Surely the cable can also be re routed if required, people who have fitted the tail tidy to the Meteor do some fiddling with the cable so it must be possible 👍

If you are doing your own servicing on the Meteor 350, you can reset the Service Reminder very easily. 1. Turn on the bike 2. Using the i-Button located on the left handle bar, cycle through the options, until Trip B is displayed 3. Now hold the i-Button for 2-3 Seconds to rest the mileage to zero 4. Turn off the ignition 5. Wait for 20 Seconds 6. Holding the i-Button, turn on the ignition, while continuing to press the i-Button and wait for 7-8 seconds 7. The ‘Service Reminder’ should be cancelled 8. If this does not work, repeat the above

I covered 233 miles from a full tank ( on center stand ) to the reserve light . Low-fuel warning comes on when there is around 5-Litres of fuel left which should cover a further 100 miles . I got 102.44 miles / UK Gallon .Low fuel warning also comes on when going up hill when the tank is getting low . I just set the trip so I know I can easily cover 230 miles before thinking about refueling .Tripper connected exactly as recommended in the Owners manual but your phone requires a dedicated power supply as the app does use power fast .

Such an economical little motor. How fast were you travelling to achieve this mpg? People say there is a big difference between 60 and 70mph for example. Thanks

The riding gear I wear is: SUIT: Alpinestars Andes Tourer I BOOTS: RST tracktech evo III GLOVES: RST Thermotech heated gloves HELMET: ARAI RX-7V gold edition The helmet and the boots are really for sports/track and not ideal for cruising and touring. The Alpinestars suit and RST heated gloves are great however and I could recommend those. There might be newer versions of them out now but secondhand is also a viable option. Thanks.

Hello Followme! I'm using a Hero7 and a Rode SmartLav+ but make sure you buy the right one as I bought the one for mobile phones and then had to get an adapter. Annoying mistake. Also I don't using the interface I used a separate audio capture device. Please note this isnt for everyone as you don't have synced audio and video, this has to be done in edit. I agree with the other commentors. It was a nice review, but the section on the meteors touring capability simply isn't true. I've taken my Meteor on many tours. All I do is tell Google Maps to avoid motorways, and you're okay. However, a short 30-45 minute hop on a motorway is still really doable if you're happy sitting in the slow lane at 60-65 watching the world go bye. As for storage they're is many options. I purchased some fantastic retro saddlebags from my local motorcycle accessories store. They fit everything and anything you'll need for a weeks touring. As long as you're not taking the kitchen sink (as my wife does when we go on holiday), you're okay. In my op the Royal Enfield Meteor is the perfect all-rounder. I plan on doing the NC500 on mine.

Thanks for the comment. A couple of things to mention. I pre-ordered my Meteor in early 2021 before any test ride or bikes landed in the UK. The video was made in early 22 from memory. Accessories at this point were few and far between. My point on touring I still stand by, just my opinion and I know it's possible to tour on anything even 125cc. I don't think for a long tour its fun to be flat out all the time as I was on mine. The bike has evolved a lot since then and I agree many people are touring on them so each to their own I guess. I'm now riding a BSA Goldstar which for me is the spiritual successor to the M350 because its a single but with a bit more punch. Away thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoy your bike. I just went through fellow rider comments here and observe meteor is giving different mileage on different speeds I have been riding this at 80kmph and i have observed a 42.5-44kmpl does it really increase at 60kmph? what's being the avg at 100kmph for you?

Hi. I want to buy a motorcycle from RE based on comfort being paramount (by that I mean less back pain on long rides of an hour or more on country roads). Would the Meteor 350 or Hunter 350 be good from a comfort perspective on bad roads?

Hi Abel, thanks for the comment. People argue all the time about this but I don't think the cruiser bike style is the most comfortable. I would try the Hunter 350 or even the Himalayan for maximum comfort.

Hi Kya, that is a great point. I have ridden the Himalayan and have heard about the 450cc (still a single so useful engine) 'Hot Himmy'. It was appealing as is the Himalayan Scram (man that one looks excellent) and then there is the Super Meteor with the 650 engine. All of these are great options but I wanted something available now. With the Meteor you see in this video I ordered it in March 2021 and it was delivered in November. My new bike I ordered in April (this month) and it was delivered to my house 3 days later. This meant I miss none of the warmer weather riding season we have here in the UK. Thanks!

As an owner i have to say that according to the manual, the 3000 mile/6 month is not a service but just a check over - which can easily be done by the owner and not affecting the warranty, according to other commentators ! ?

Hi Glen, thanks for the comment. I'm on a couple of Facebook groups for the Meteor and the servicing and the warranty has been the subject of much discussion. Its true that every other service is a check over, but the manual states and authorised RE reseller 'should' perform the work. What's a little unclear is whether an owner doing it (even checks) would be enough to trip the warranty into not valid, even given the fact the owner could use genuine RE parts. To me it seems deliberately vague so RE can cover themselves if needs be. One interesting thing is this rust issue on the catalytic converter, I saw that several owners are reaching out to MotoGB for this and want it replaced under warranty, it will be interesting if they start inquiring about how the bikes were serviced as part of this warranty claim process. @@glendyble4725 Agreed, for my Royal Enfield I took it in for the first service and mine wasn't at the mileage for the second 'check' service. I felt a bit ripped off as they relieved me £150 for essentailly an oil change, though they said they adjusted the valves as well. For my new bike I've started as I mean to go on, I'm servicing it myself and learning as I go. Ive done a bit on cars but never bikes. The first time I spilt oil all over the block paving and my other half wasn't too impressed 😂 but it seems simple stuff. I have another service to do at 1000km and I'll do that myself too.

Think am gonna go for the Classic as a first proper bike. Small matter of DAS haha.. The only thing that worried me slightly is how are the brakes going down steep hills? Went down one on my 125 and shat my .....😜 P.s 300 miles service ok am sure they dont mind if you are a bit over. 3000 seems ok again. Am only gone do one big trip every so often and Wales is say 150 miles from me... If abroad there are quite a few Enfield dealers. £150 is steep though! Max 50 is thats a bit annoying. I just did that on a 125... Rinse n repeat haha. (lucky have 20 mile trips at 45 easy).

That would be such a nice first proper bike. The classic would be great and there are some great colour options available. I never had any problem with the brakes on Meteor they are more than enough for the application. The rear brake is surprising good too. One thing if you are riding to Wales you might find the Meteor 350/Classic 350 a little underpowered (depending how much you weigh) for long journeys. You could consider the Interceptor 650 or the upcoming Super Meteor that has a 650 engine if you wanted a bit more punch All the bikes in the current RE line up are great though and all enjoyable. Also the most you can go to 'officially' over mileage for the 300 mile service is 323 miles. Mine was a little over that but they logged it as 323 as that's the most over you can be apparently. But you are right the power issue is a nit of a worry. 20bhp over 14bhp...should be enough. What I would like is something that chugs along at 60 around 6000 rpm...that would be fine. (Am completly happy on country roads). One thing re my 125 is in traffic the 1st to 2nd is really short which can be tiresome. P.s The interceptor might be the sweet spot. A classic 650!!!? The Meteor 650 is a poss..not sure I like the lower riding position as am 6ft...will get on one.. Good call...I love the look of the meteor.

Yes to be honest I don't find it fun at 70mph, it will do it but then engine doesn't seem to thank you for it. Reviewers will ride the bikes I guess in a representative fashion and most people I know riding this bike seem to bimble about the countryside and visiting places outside of the city. I think most people know this when the buy a Meteor. I came from a 600cc sports bike and I know 100% I was in for a shall we say different riding experience 😂

The Meteor 350 is well capable of touring, there are loads of options for cases and top boxes, even fully loaded the bike pulls well, so I disagree with what you said completely regarding touring.

Hi Allan, with much regret I am moving on the Meteor. I want to do more long distance touring and for that I could do with more luggage capacity, a slightly more comfortable seating position and a bit more power. I could have changed the Meteor by adjusting the bars adding the air intake to increase bhp and adding side boxes or panniers but it just seems a bit too far for the type of riding I want to do. I also injured my back late last year so I have to have a very comfortable seat for longer rides. I still think the Meteor is absolutely fantastic especially in the looks department!

ALL the reviews of this bike are incorrect on one aspect. You, my friend, are 5ft 11inches so you can get your feet flat down. I am 5ft 8 and even with the Low Rider seat, I can barely get my feet flat down. The seat is quite high, compared with vintage cruisers like the Yamaha Virago, DragStar, V-Star, or Suzuki Boulevard S40 LS650 ((formerly known as the Suzuki Savage). The Meteor feels heavy at slow speed, and the centre of gravity is quite high up, NOT low down, as some reviewers claimed. I had a black Stellar Model with the RE windshield added after the first service, which strangely seemed to change the engine note radically. Either that, or the engine just sounds different after the first service. Another issue that drove me up the wall is that the running-in instructions in the owner's handbook are ridiculously Conservative and almost impossible tofo.low on fast English roads like dual carriageways and motorways - you will get hooted if you crawl along at no faster than 43 miles per hour, which you are supposed to do for the first 319 miles (500 km). Even after the first service, you are advised not to go over 50mph until you have completed 1242 miles (2000km). Utterly absurd. Most of the RE dealers tell you to ignore these instructions and say it's okay to go up to 60mph after the first service. After 1242 miles you can finally go at 65 -70 mph - yippee! But 70 is the top speed, flat out. As I sold the bike after 488 miles, and was glad to be rid of it, I never got to try this out. My advice if you are on the short side and want to cruise comfortably at 65-70 mph with enough oomph to get past vehicles in the middle motorway lane - is buy a vintage Yamaha Virago 535, there's plenty still about, or a Suzuki S40 650, if you can find one; they're very rare in the UK and only available as an American import. Both bikes are heaps more fun to ride than the RE Meteor 350.

Hi Kate, thanks for your comment. Yes seat height is all relative, for me having ridden a few bikes to compare this with I find it easy to flat foot the Meteor. I might be 5'11'' but it's really inside leg measurement that best determines how far you are from the floor given a set seat height, I am 31/32 inside leg so relatively short and can still put feet down. It also depends on your expectations, you do not need to 'flat foot' to enjoy a motorcycle, some riders are aiming for the balls of both feet of even being able to put one foot down. I wouldn't personally be comfortable with one foot down only at the traffic lights but that's just me. If you want something very low the Kawasaki Vulcan S or Honda CMX500 Rebel are probably your best bet. Both these bikes are available new and have low rider option. The Kwak even advertises a fit for rider under 5'6''. Many people do not want to take the risk of owning a vintage bike, this is typically driven by passion and not practicality. The centre of gravity is low down relative to most motorcycles, its a duplex cradle steel frame which is heavy and a low slung exhaust. Perhaps a HD Livewire with it's battery pack is lower CoG but if you try to move a BMW R 1250 GSA for example this bike has a high CoG and makes off bike manoeuvring much harder. My own bike a Voge 500DSX is only 9kg heavier than the Meteor but it's a lot harder to move around as the weight is higher up. The running in schedule is a bit annoying I agree, most owners either push this a little bit or ignore it completely. I personally on mine rode to 50mph or even 55mph during an overtake. There is also the school of thought that it is not the speed but the harshness of acceleration that should be paid attention when running in. I didn't wring the neck of mine during running in but build up speed gradually. Regarding top speed, well yes I made this point in the video that you can go 70mph at a push, well every Meteor owner will tell you that it's not a bike you buy to go fast (buy an R1 people will say). For me I found the bike struggle after 65mph to get to 70mph and I wanted to be able to achieve 70mph easily so I changed bikes. I was not glad to get rid of mine and think it is a great bike with many plus points (outlined in this video). Thanks!

What I would say about royal Enfield is service it yourself. I've had problems with royal Enfield on my previous bike ( 500 bullet ) , and when it ran into gearbox , electrical and fueling problems the dealer simply didn't want to know. All the service jobs are easy and the money you'll save is crazy . The latest Enfield's are very good, the build quality is so much better than the bikes of 10 years ago . My bike does between 90 and 106 mpg which is fantastic, I also ignore the red idiot like because just like the new Honda I had before it it's always on for no reason 👍

Enjoyable I suspect that in India they are not stupid enough to salt their roads; its one of the most polluting things in the UK for salmon, trout etc when the thaw comes (Usually about 12 hours later !) Why we can't use ground granite like the Austrians ( A bit colder...) I will never know

I know quite a few people ride them in all weathers and so salt exposure is a real thing. Great video, however, you have made my mind up NOT to buy? things like the service costs and rust, as I noticed in a Royal Enfield showroom there were signs of rust on the rear mudguard just under the passenger seat. also the speed issue I need a bike to do all of what you demonstrated plus the occasional long trip to Devon to visit my sister. so all in all I don't think this bike is for me. thank you for giving an honest review.

Hi Skippercaship, thanks for the comment. The problem with the rear (and front) mudguard is that they hug the tyre very closely making it difficult to clean under there. There are quite a few owners touring on the Meteor and they are using all sorts of luggage options and equipment, I think they will be going at 60mph cruise however which for some is fine. Well good luck finding a bike that's suitable, there are certainly lots to choose from. The Interceptor will offer a bit more power and then there is the new BSA Goldstar being released soon as well. I was gonna subscribe to this channel, but after listening to this amateur talking about not being able to tour on a 350cc bike and then saying it can't carry luggage. Well you can tell the guy is inexperienced. I carried an armchair on the back of an XS250 back in the early 80's. I am sure you'll still be able to get throw over saddlebags?? Oh, and I toured most ofthe coastal route of Scotland on a Honda CB125T2 around the same time as the armchair removal. You could get away with a lot more in those days, by the way......

Please...please, keep both hands on the bars, especially in the 30mph zones where you need to be able to perform emergency stops more often, think of kids/ pedestrians and other drivers pulling out of junctions. It is dangerous riding whilst flapping your hand about trying to emphasise your dialogue instead of having full control in case of emergency.

This is about risk management, I am comfortable with removing my hands from the handlebars at times. This is because I started riding on sport bikes where the attention required per unit time is much higher than trundling around on a little Meteor at 40mph, secondly because of the ergos of these bikes riders will often take their hands off the left handlebar to rest their wrists so this is habit forming and I still rest my wrist every now and then today. If that is what you took from this video despite all the content concerning the pros and cons of the Meteor then I invite you to explore other content on KZbin, there's a plethora of options for Meteor 350 reviews with riders that will set a 'better' example of how to ride. @@MindfulMotorcyclist Your explanation doesn't cut it and the poster is correct. You are all over the place and really need both hands on both bars. God help you if you ride like this on faster bikes, but actually you can kill yourself on even the slowest scooter if you have the kind of death wish your one-handed style shows.

I started watching this several times and kept switching it off. When I saw your first review, leaving speed to the track made sense. You complained bitterly about the screen, but screens are related to specific rider height. The original RE screen will fit someone perfectly... You removed the screen and complained about the wind... It is a naked bike, deeeer. You complained about no storage space... It's a naked bike, deeeer. The pannier option from RE is recognisable as a piece of garbage from the very first picture that appeared. Once appon a time, all bikes were naked and you found an aftermarket rack and boxes to fit from companies like Craven or Vetter, or you made or modified your own. You could buy a GoldWing or PacificCoast if that's what you want. Now, if people can't buy from the original manufacturer they are lost. When they do buy OEM they call it customised. Customised is hacking the staring head off the frame and welding in a goose neck and fitting a set of 2ft oversized Leon Wallis sprigger forks, or making your own. The Meteor, with it's low slung exhaust lends itself perfectly to fitting or making a decent set of side cases, especially the way the rear seat and grab rail mount. Interestingly, your new bike has just the sort of pannier frame and rack that any backstreet workshop could make for the Meteor. Talking of the new bike, it looks perfect. For me 40 to 50hp was always optimum and anything else is unnecessary. But this puts you back in a speed bracket you were stepping down from. So horses for Courses. Hope the new bike suits you better. Have fun and be careful with the extra oomph. I will follow you again coz the new bike has got my attention.

Hi Tim, thanks for the comment here. I still stand by the point that excess speed should be left to the track and that is still something I practice albeit with a few accidents 😂. The speed comment relates to being able to cover long distances at the national speed limit on roads with a central reservation i.e. 70mph, in France this is 130kph quicker still. I think the bike is not happy at that speed with someone of my height and weight onboard. The screen has caused quite a lot of problems for many people from about 5'8'' and up, this is around the average height of a UK male rider. Its also compounded for me as I need clean air to record audio, there's nothing viewers detest more than bad audio on these videos. So I would admit that some of my frustration RE the screen comes from that side, for most earplugs would be fine. Storage space well, at the time I had my Meteor it was fairly early in the life cycle of the product and we were still waiting for aftermarket options, I ordered the RE plastic bathroom bin (aka pannier) and sent it back as I also thought it was substandard. I agree with you about customisation, everything today is dealer only servicing, OEM accessories or bust. In years gone by I've swapped engines in cars and my Dad even used a Jaguar X type headrest to fashion a pillion backrest for my Mum on his Mutt motorcycle, that I thought was rather inventive! The new bike despite not having the charm or following of the Meteor does manage 80mph (in France) rather well and as you say hits the sweet spot with 47bhp. The Voge pannier frame was lifted (shall we say generously 'inspired') from a 2012 BMW GS as the design is very very similar. It works wells to be fair. Thanks for the comment! Sean

You bike is too new for useful feedback. 1600 miles is not long term. Rubbish. I will agree with you on one thing though. This bike is an absolute rubbish at touring.
