Royal Gibraltar Regiment bids farewell to Commander-in-Chief

Vice Admiral Sir David Steel has bid a ceremonial farewell to Gibraltar, marking the end of his tenure as Governor and Commander-in-Chief.
VAdm Sir David was the head of the British enclave on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, also known as the Rock, for four years.
His departure began at the historic Convent, the Governor’s official residence, where he was met by two Guards of Honour.

Thanks to the people of Gibraltar, for helping me when I was very ill on my honeymoon, and for your support for Britain. Many of my family enjoyed the support of Gibraltar, not least my Grandfather whose ship had safe haven there after an Italian bomb nearly sank HMS Firedrake. The ship's company was able to rely on the temporary repair to a hole so big that the Admiral rowed a boat into the warship. That repair took them across the Atlantic, so they all owed their lives to the workers of Gibraltar. Thank you. It was an honour to walk there on the paths of all my uncles, my father and grandfathers, and to experience the famous hospitality of Gibraltarians.
