In October 2011, Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, R.F.A. Fort Victoria, and the Royal Navy's Type 23 Frigate, HMS Somerset, were on patrol in the Indian Ocean. Both had a detachment of Royal Marines onboard which, over the course of four days, would be employed to retake three hijacked vessels, among them Italian-flagged bulk carrier, the MV Montecristo.
By the end of the operations, the Marines would have captured just over twenty pirates and freed upto fifty hostages; all without firing a single round in action.

You gotta consider that most of the time, these pirates are desperate, malnourished young men. Who'd probably prefer to be in custody of the marines or western government over conditions back home. Why waste your life by shooting back at well armed Marines with your dusty old AK while they're shadowed by a helicopter and a frigate?

Personally, I don't have any mercy for Somali Pirates. Word needs to get out that captured pirates are not treated as heros by the Capturing Forces. This will stop the enbrazoned Criminals from repeating the same crime repeatedly, which is what is happening now. Without consequences for their piracy, there will never be an end of this kind of Atrocity!
@ghostkilla2016

@@davidgreve1081 what u didnt know is they are forced to pirate sometimes, not all of them some just want quick money, but some were fishermen and european countries fish all of the catch and sell it cheaper undercutting their businesses and so they resort to stealing it back to be called pirates although its their waters. If a russian ship pulled up to brighton the uk would not be called pirates if they boarded the ship to tell them to fuck off would they ?
@frankanderson5012
@frankanderson5012 3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostkilla2016 European fishermen are going all the way to Somalia to fish? Doesn’t seem very cost effective especially since you say they are then managing to undercutting them. That would also suggest they are then selling the fish in the same marketplace which also seems strange. There are so many holes in your comment. And why say if a Russian ship pulled up in Brighton? Why somewhere in the UK? Are they British fishermen because that would be even more unlikely. And what percentage are these pirates fishermen? What about the others? I suppose you have an excuse for them to. Next time life deals me a rotten card, I’ll just turn to crime because according to you, that’s ok. Maybe I could just rob you. Strange how fishermen in other parts of the world who have lost their livelihood for similar reasons, haven’t resorted to robbery, kidnapping and murder.
@RussTillling
@RussTillling 3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostkilla2016 I have seen this in a documentary before. Somalian fishing waters are being fished unsustainably by foreign, large vessels (Chinese?) These people have very few options for survival in a war-devasted country. Without looking through rose-tinted glasses ther is definitely that background as context. However discouraging the activity, and returning stolen property, without harming anyone, is definitely the best outcome.🙂

They wouldn't of known them to be Royal Marines to be fair, as they are indistinguishable from the Royal Navy personnel who were also there. Normally it's the sight of a heavily armed warship and the helicopter with a HMG (heavy machine gun) that really lets them know the game is up. There's no question though, the enemy have often been heavily demoralised knowing the Royal Marines are coming!

They are SOF capable, train like SOF, are as fit as SOF, and carry out SOF missions, and do a lot of SOF stuff on deployments anyways, they just don't have the label of "Special Forces" that's all. For reference, if they were put into the US military system, they would be under USSOCOM alongside SEALs, MARSOC, 75th Rangers, PJs & CCTs. However, in the British military they that "SF" part is only meant for Tier 1 type units like the SAS/SBS/SRR, who are the British equivalent to Delta, DEVGRU & the ISA.

@@BritishEmpireForHisMajesty they say it's the modern day and capital punishments are inhumane, barbaric, outdated and must be abolished. But these pirates, who knows if they're connected in any sort of way to terrorists in their home country. These terrorists may use piracy as a way to make quick bucks to fund themselves.
