In June 2009, the French Navy's Replenishment Ship, the Somme, deployed to the Indian Ocean to act as the Command vessel for all French Naval forces operating in the region. What was intended to be a low-intensity, normal, deployment for the ships crew quickly turned into the extraordinary, as they had to fend off not one, but two attempts by pirates to board the Somme in the space of 6 months.

Unfortunately, the anti-piracy measures appear half-serious at best, as most captured pirates never see justice even when sent on their way to court to places like Kenya. The most those warships actually do is deter and assist when they can when a vessel has been boarded. I couldn't tell you how many Documentaries and reports I've watched where the pirates got away with their action somehow in the end. As just a guy on the internet with no anti-piracy experience around the horn of Africa, I hope I'm genuinely wrong about this, because this really seems like such a waste of time, money, and energy.

Its about starvation. Most of them were fishermen. During the Somalian Civil war hundreds of foreign Factory trawlers illegally fished out just about every viable commercial fish species in Somali waters. Most of those men have no livelihood now, it was stolen from them by greedy foreign fishing concerns. They were, for the most part, subsistence fishers, which means they caught enough to feed their families with a bit left over to sell. Now they are sat there watching their wives and children starve, but they still have their boats, and they live in a country where you can go to the market and buy AK's, ammo and old RPG's for pennies. What do you expect them to do? Starve? Or take back from the people who sat back and laughed as your livelihood was torn away from you by greedy, rapacious foreign fishers? There are two sides to every story, and I am ashamed to say the tale I just told you is NOT simply a story. It is what happened.

It's hard to believe the Somme could have fired machine guns, presumably .50 caliber at those little boats with out sinking them and killing or severely wounding their crews. they must have been deliberately missing. I think that if merchant ships were permitted to arm themselves, and shoot to kill, and naval ships did the same, that would do an awful lot to deter piracy.

Yeah, I feel no pity for pirates. Sinking their skiffs and ships would be a great deterrent. But, I think these Somali kids become pirates after hearing "success" stories among their peers. They get delusions of "fame and fortune" and go out on these pirate escapades hoping to feed their families (sad) or just get rich (delusional fairy tale) or look like a tough guy (pathetic). Arresting them and sending them home to courts that are probably corrupt is just going to have them out and repeating the same nonsense again. If you start eliminating the pirate threat when its faced: when a skiff shows up, either disable it and leave or sink it. If you sink it, those pirates will tell no tales to their friends back home. If a skiff is set adrift on the open seas, its likely the pirates will either die or nearly starve to death before being found. At best, they'll become disillusioned and return home with tales of dread or they'll die in their next encounter. In the end, I think the best way to end piracy is for Somali kids to think of piracy of a way to "disappear and never be heard from again or nearly starve to death".

90% of Somali pirates were fishermen. They are pirates because fishing fleets took advantage of the long Somalian civil war and illegally fished for years in their waters. Enough factory boats, for enough time that they totally crashed the populations of every viable commercial fish species in Somali waters. Those boats belonged to many nations, including but not limited to China, Japan, France, Spain, the USA, the Netherlands, Belgium and so on. That fishing was totally and utterly, blatantly illegal. They had no permits to fish in Somali EEZ, let alone their Territorial waters. It was not only ignored, it was actively encouraged by some Governments. So now those fishermen have no way to feed their families, because there are no damned fish for them to catch. What do you expect a bunch of fishermen with boats, who live in a country where they can go to the local market and pick up AK's and old RPG's for pennies to do? Oh, and before you go on and blather about how the fisheries will recover... perhaps, perhaps not. Worse comes to the worse and it could be decades, perhaps never. Are there precedents for me saying this? Why, now you ask, yes, there are. In the 1980's the largest Cod fishery in the world collapsed, the Grand Bank Fishery in Canada. Despite a total moratorium of cod fishing in the area those fish still have not returned. 40 years later, there is some debate in the Marine Ecology community about whether they ever WILL return. Their niche has been taken over by several species of dogfish, the cod will need to compete their way back in, and there just are not enough of them. And before you ask, yes, my Background is indeed Marine Ecology, including some years spent with various Fisheries departments.....

3:22 Canadian Halifax Class Friggit, unfortunetly I can't make out the registry on the side of the ship for the name of it but it was either the HMSC Montreal or Saint Johns due to the fresh paint job for the time of the picture. Fun fact of the day.

@@alexcrowder1673 The ship is not threatened by the pirates, all that migh happen is a bit of scratched paint, and if they are really agressive they'll be obliterated when closer. But if the warship fire at them and the newspapers learn it it may cause huge problems in their homeland. So its better to scare them, as they won't be stupid enought to charge a warship.

French and more generally occidental navies can't do this, even if a lot of soldiers would love, because it could cause huge political problems if medias learn about it. Russians clearly don't care the same, and on this case they are clearly right.

And how long after they were turned over to 'authorities' do you think it took to get them rearmed and back out on the sea? I don't begrudge the action taken by the Somme. The good guys have laws, and tend to follow them. That is, after all, what separates the two poles of right and wrong, or good and evil, if you will. The rules say you must turn them over to so-and-so and even though you know they'll just maybe get a beating for getting caught, but will be back out hunting for prey before your ship's silhouette has faded into the distance, you must follow the rules.

The French Navy is more generous that I would have been. I am so tired of pirates thinking that they can kidnap and hold people for ransom. I would not have captured them; I would have sunk their boats and dropped a ton of "Chum" into the water to attract sharks and then left to go on about my mission. If pirates learned what could happen to them I think that type of activity would immediately cease.

Imagine doing WWI and WWII tactic against these pirates where armed merchant ships with guns tucked or hidden away deep inside the ships and when someone attack them they would reveal their guns and fire at any attackers threatening them. Imagine if they have that in 21st century where armed tankers or large cargo ship would reveal their 25mm or 30mm autocannon or fifty cal machineguns at least and open fire at approaching pirate skiffs. I know they use armed contractors onboard to repel boarders, but the autocannon option is much more of a stand off option before they come in close. I know it's not possible in real world especially with 21st century bureaucracy, but one can envision something like modern tanker or cargoship with hidden autocannons and machineguns deep in the hull or deck
@justeunfan3364
@justeunfan3364 Жыл бұрын
The problem is, if you start putting autocannons on civilians ship mostly register in doubtful countries, how much time will it take for cannons disapearing from ships and being sold to random terrorist groups ? Or just places on pirate ships? How would a merkant ship detect pirates soon enought to be able to use them efficiently ? And I personnaly won't like to have a civilians boss or compagny reponsible for stocking and maintaining ammunition. It would cause way more problems than it would solve

After several Dutch ships were attacked by Pirates always unsuccessfully, the Dutch have changed the rules for steaming in the northern Indian Ocean they now always fly a 20 by 40 ft flag at the Masthead to remind people that this is not a peaceful civilian ship! Yet that ships in the last 10 years have been attacked more than a dozen times! Always responded to lethally by the Dutch Navy!

The pirates were kind of smart in tossing their weapons overboard. They had some sense. I wonder how Somalian authorities handle those accused of piracy and related offenses. How severe is the punishment? I can't imagine Somalian prisons are pleasant given they have citizens so desperate theyre willing to take over vessels and hold people against their will.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 Жыл бұрын
There is a problem. The situation is more complex, you are just looking at them as pirates. What you are not looking at is what they were before they BECAME pirates. The vast majority of them were fishermen. How many people are talking about giving those Somali fishermen compensation for the hundreds of factory trawlers that literally fished Somali waters clean of commercially viable fish during their long civil war? How many people are talking about paying them for the livelihoods they lost because of greedy, rapacious Western and Asian Fishing concerns who were blatantly illegally fishing in Somali waters? There was no International outcry about this, some Governments actually ENCOURAGED it.... Those fishermen were subsistence fishers. They were catching enough to feed their families and sell a bit on the side. You remove the fish and people like that begin to starve, they get to watch their wives and kids starve. So let me ask you a question, if you are watching your wife and kids starve, and you have access to a boat, and some guys come up to you and offer you payed employment, what do you do? Its not like you have options here. For most of those guys its piracy or starvation, there is no middle ground. We created the problem, but as usual its the Somali's who are really paying the price....
