Most people who have phobias of insects can't help it. Tetrapods and arthropods have been at war for hundreds of millions of years. The only longer war on earth is bacteria vs. fungi. Our instincts to be repulsed by insects are hardwired by our DNA and are very difficult to overcome.

I have a genuine phobia of moths. I would run through a wall to get away from one and shake all over. This one is actually cute like a cuddly toy it's helpful seeing them in a different way.

There are actually a lot of moth species that are brightly colored, and even put butterflies to shame in my opinion! Lunar moths are a prime example, bright greens and deep purples. There’s another species that’s pink green and white I believe? (It’s probably wrong on that, don’t remember) I know how it is having a fear of bugs. Spiders are my absolute nemesis (I lived in widow country, so my fear is a little valid) but jumping spiders and (surprising) Tarantulas are ones I enjoy looking at because of how colorful they can be. Their intelligence is another thing too, jumping spiders are really smart for how tiny they are.

Glad you got to experience that, but can't help but feel sorry for the poor moth. Human light pollution has almost completely disrupted the lifecycle of indigenous moth populations near populated areas. Any time you see moths or any other bugs flying around bright lights, it's not good for the bugs. Directly leads to their deaths a lot of the time. Sure, this sounds all doom and gloom, but it's a real problem and we shouldn't just "not talk about it".

I had picked some flowers n I put them in a vase on the kitchen table. And I seen a green cattapillar rating on some succulents I picked off a bush. I now call it the butterfly bush, because when I went to get more, the bush was filled with empty pupas. 1-2 weeks I would go n get more succulents n a few flowers for Willow. I named him Willow♥️. He ate day n night. I would go to sleep n he was eating. N in the morning eating. N it is as September n we had a great summer n fall starting out. Rain n rainbows 🌈. 1 evening he was preparing the cacoon. I kept him in the same vase on the window seal with the window open 3 inches. Then one morning he came out n was the HUGEST MONARCH BUTTERFLY I ever have SEEN! Oh Willow♥️. He knew me n would ride on my shirt where my heart was😁. 1 day I had to let him go. One day we heard our dog growling in a concerned way, and we saw a black caterpillar scooting along the ground away from him. We restrained the pupper and took the ‘pillar into custody. Best way I could describe the caterpillar’s appearance was “black medieval barbed wire.” After scooping it into a big plastic jar and giving it a stick, we did some research and found out it was a “Mourning Cloak Butterfly” caterpillar. Black wings with white-ish trim, as I recalled thinking. A while later, it cocooned in front of us, which was grotesquely fascinating. It was the first time I’d ever seen a metamorphosis in real time, so I remember almost holding my breath as I watched it happen. And thinking back, I had to admire that this caterpillar trusted us deeply enough that it cocooned in front of us. Then, a week or so later… We found it had left its cocoon, and was sitting on the inside of our plastic jar lid. We brought it outside, opened the lid, and for a brief moment it crawled out and actually perched on my fingers. Its wings caught the light, and I learned something wonderful about their true colors. A Mourning Cloak’s wings were actually NOT black as suggested by online pictures, but a gorgeous, shimmering deep navy blue. Its “white” trim was actually gold. It was hands down the most beautiful butterfly I’d ever seen. Then its wings caught wind, and it fluttered away into the ether. Some research later, I was delighted to learn that Mourning Cloaks were among the most long-lived butterflies, living up to three years long. We saw it again the following year. And, amazingly, several years after we would see the beauties fluttering by. It was almost as though the one butterfly we’d raised brought a family home to roost a while. Even now they stop by. ^_^

Louisiana has a lot more than just that. You should have a fair number of big saturniids around other than luna moths, including the royal walnut moth in the video, try searching around old growth forests, or just any old walnut trees for this specific moth. Actually, you are in one of the southernmost states, in a particularly tropical part of it, so you should have a lot of large lepidopterans (and other insects). I've noticed that it's common for Americans to see strange, big, and amazing insects online and think they are something wildly exotic when they actually have a decent chance of seeing them in their backyard, and a much higher chance of finding them if they looked for them, but unfortunately they aren't even aware of how close they really are. This moth is found throughout the eastern part of the continent.

@@chitinskin9860 I'm talking about my specific region of my state. I'm well aware of what lives here. 😁 But of the 8 identified "common" saturniidae that populate Louisiana, only three of them have significant populations where I live. Now we have a crap-ton of other sizable moths in the general region, but the Luna moths are the ones that really stand out. Mostly we're just dragonflies and lubbers (grasshoppers the size of small animals) 😱 🤣

I remember when I was 12-13ish there was a storm that had hit our neighborhood. After the storm passed we were in our neighbors yard talking about the storm and the damage it had done, then my little brother came into the yard screaming that there was a giant bug trying to attack him. We went out to see what it was and it was this beautiful regal moth struggling to fly, probably because it’s wings were soaked. So I stayed with it to make sure no predators would attack it. Eventually while it was trying to fly it landed on my arm, and stayed there for a while. So I walked around the neighborhood looking at the fallen trees and flooded roads while carrying the moth. Then after a while it started to flap its wings, so I raised my arm up and it flew off. Apparently they’re super rare around where I live and that’s the only one I’ve ever seen. One of the coolest experiences of my life. And no I did not touch the wings

I am not sure about these moths, but some species, trained to get food in a specific way prior to pupation, and following their transformation they could "remember" how to do the same thing as moths, which is incredibly amazing, because some species (maybe most, but didn't want to assume/give false information) turn into a soup basically, to reform shape. It's as fascinating as immortal Jelly fish starting over.
