A less grand piece that crown princess Mary debut in 2015. Probably made at the turn of the last century

@@jonasviking9768 she only has four tiaras at her disposal right now. The ruby she received two days before her wedding. Her wedding tiara. The Midnight tiara, that was made for her but is only on loan. And the newest one that’s originally a necklace, but she uses frequently as a tiara. Only the first of them has rubies. And none of the two tiaras that now will be for her to use as Queen, has rubies. One of them has emeralds though. The ruby tiara was made for Desirée Clary for the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte. It came to Sweden when her husband became King of Sweden. And it came to Denmark in 1869, when Desirée’s granddaughter married the then Crown Prince of Denmark (the later King Frederk the VIII). It has since only been worn by future Queens of Denmark. The only exception being Queen Margrethe, as her mother kept it until her death in 2000. She testamented it to Crown Prince Frederik, and that is how it is now worn by Mary.

Danish perspective: When the Queen announced her abdication on New Years’ Eve, it paralyzed the country. She is the first Danish monarch in 500 years to abdicate the throne (litterally. The last Danish monarch who abdicated, was King Christian the II in 1523, though it was forced), and Queen Margrethe has always stubbornly said she would remain the Queen Regnant until she died. We respect her decision, but it was still a shock. We however have confidence that the Crown Prince couple are ready to take on the mantle and are very excited for them. There is a trust in Denmark. Queen Lovisa started it and the pearl and diamond tiara belongs to it. When Queen Lovisa came to Denmark, she had a huge collection of jewels. I think she had enough tiaras to give to most of her 8 children. One of those tiaras is in Norway now and it originally belonged to Empress Josephine of France, who was her great grandmother. A few others belong to Queen Margrethe’s second cousins and another with its full parure is in a museum in Japan. If you google, you might find pictures of most of the jewelry that is in the trust because they were displayed in an exhibit for Queen Margrethe’s recent jubilee. The Queen wears most of the jewels, but there are some pieces that she doesn’t wear much, if not at all.

It is more than a breach of protocol, it’s like spitting at the current queens 52 years of service to her country. Personally, my favorite is the Queen’s Floral Aigrette tiara. Mostly because it can be arranged in so many different ways and separated into smaller pieces. And every time the Queen wears it, it almost feels like a new tiara, with the way she arranges it. The ruby tiara is however a close second. And its history makes it even much more significant.

It’s one tiara that’s been “lost” to divorce. And who knows. Maybe it will return, by Alexandra giving it to a future daughter-in-law. What’s interesting though is this: a few years ago, the daughters of the Queen’s cousin put one of Queen Alexandrine’s tiaras up for auction and everyone was worried it would end up outside of the country. It was sold and no one knew who bought it. Until it turned up in a tv program where the Queen opened up the royal jewelry box and there it was.

While this is an exciting time, I just can’t help but feel so disappointed in Frederick. I remember Crown Princess Mary’s speech to him on his 50th birthday-the affection and love in her voice to him. And she is so proud and loving with their four children. And you can just feel the chill between them now because he couldn’t keep it in his marriage. He has a gorgeous, smart, loving wife and great mother to their kids and she’ll be an epic Queen. He even said she’s his greatest counselor. And despite thinking this is a great gig for her-she made a HUGE sacrifice to marry him. Leaving her family, her home country, her language, etc. And that’s how he thanks her. A lot of the British commentators think this abdication is to cover and distract from his affair. I wouldn’t go that far, but I don’t think it helps the abdication at all. It adds to the speculation sadly. I’m just so disappointed in him. Even if it wasn’t a full-fledged affair, he was sloppy and disrespected his wife. 🤬

Whether it was an affair or not, this constant bringing it up and an alluding it to be the reason of his mother's abdication so that she doesn't leave, is the currency of press and social media, it would be prudent even respectful to leave family matters to be sorted out among the members because at the end of the day we as observers don't ever really know for sure what going on behind the scenes we only speculate and at the end of the day CP Mary knows her husband better than any of us or what best for her and her children. We the observes only look at the optics, make a decision based on that without an appreciation of the real set of facts which is quite unfair to the people involved.

The women of the Danish Royal Family are stylish and gorgeous and elegant, that coral colour looks stunning on Queen Magrethe....I believe she wore a similar shade at their wedding but the coral colour seems to be her signature colour, it's a lovely and unusual cour and suits her!! I love that she is not afraid of striking bright colours. I think the tiara worn by Princess Mary is pretty but I wish it's overall shape peaked in the centre instead of being uniform height all around. Brittany! Please don’t call our royal jewels ugly!! Here’s some info concerning the Danish jewel collections. The golden puppy diadem was a private gift from the Queen‘s husband, Prince Henrik to her on their silver wedding. He had designed it himself, and it is privately owned by the Queen. So who will inherit it is uncertain. She very rarely uses it herself as I’m sure she knows that gold does not go very well with grey hair, as you rightly state. It is not my taste, but Prince Henrik was very artistic, as is the Queen, and has made some very interesting- and highly praised sculptures of marble, granite and copper. Maybe he should have stuck with that 😉 The ruby tiara is also privately owned by our future Queen and therefore not part of the crown jewels. The the-piece floral tiara Queen Margrethe almost always wears is HER way of wearing it. Before she did, no one wore it like that. It is originally meant to be worn as a stand-up tiara - or be split into hair pieces and brooches. But because she has such an artistic view of everything she often does things differently that usual. We love her for that ❤

Not just because it is said about Her Majesty's golden puppy diadem, but because it is ALWAYS DISRESPECTFUL to state your opinion on anyone's appearance if not asked for it by them. I could say a few words about the so-called 'jewellry' that Brittany promotes, but I don't. If she finds it beautiful, then so be it. She's the one wearing it! Besides, you shouldn't comment on something you don't have a profound knowledge about - or is educated in and last I checked, Brittany is a historian (or at least she says she is) and not a jeweller - or a fashion expert/stylist like for instance Beebs Kelley. Brittany should put what happens today in the world's monarchies in a historic perspective. That would be interesting and she has the knowledge to do so - which not many other royal commentators have.

Love that Ruby Tiara. It would've been so perfect for King Charles' coronation. I do agree that hopefully there'll be a trust set up similar to what the British monarchy has for their tiaras. Your comment about loaning tiaras to daughters-in-laws made me wonder if Meghan STILL has the Queen Mary tiara from her wedding (hope not).

I read that the queen had a copy made to lend to Meghan. It was not told to Meghan she was wearing a copy, but she had a habit of “losing” jewelry that was lent to her. So I don’t think the queen was worried too much if Meghan misplaced the tiara.

Mm has Princess Diana's aquamarine ring, which she wore to the wedding reception and which makes me sad! It was a gift from an early girlfriend of Prince Charles, who became a good friend to both royals. I know Mm has the gold watch Prince Charles gave Diana, and possibly has some of Diana's earrings, but there is no way of knowing how much and which pieces she has. I certainly hope she is made to return all the jewellry, eventually. When Wallis Simpson became Duchess of Windsor, her husband gave her some great pieces of the royal jewellry collection that had come down through the family, probably in the same ways that have been mentioned with members of other royal houses marrying into the Brit RF. After the Duke of Windsor's death, a female attorney requested and received guardianship of Wallace and her estate and sold off pieces of the fabulous jewellry collection. The Royal Family attempted to get the jewellry back, but the remainder was auctioned after Wallace's death. Years ago, I read that the RF bid on their pieces and may have gotten a few at huge prices; but some was lost forever to various high bidders. It's so sad. I hope there is a better outcome in the current situation, but I expect the worst!

The crown princess also has two tiara's that I.think you may have missed. A wedding tiara, and one she bought herself and adapted from.a.necklace. there's also a head piece worn as a tiara, made of, I believe, silver and enamel, featuring lillies. A very modern piece. I believe she is a very creative wearer of Jewels, and she carries most of them very well, unlike some other royals who look burdened and uncomfortable

Love your commentary. It adds to the thrill of Royal Watching. I am very hopeful, also, that Queen Mary cleans up some of the tiaras and adds to the collection. Maybe some of the outlier recipients of the Crown Jewelry will be approached and asked to relinquish the assets - even if a ransom has to be paid for them. Thank you, RFN, for all of your hard work.

Queen Ingrid really screwed the Danish house by dividing up the tiaras among her daughters. The two younger sisters of Queen Margarete both married into established families with their own jewels. Fact: You can never have too many tiaras. 👑

Your question is really interesting but one that is more or less impossible to answer. The value of the pieces are more complex than just counting carats, there value and importance are measured just as much in history and age. A couple of years ago a reporter wrote an article about royal wedding tiaras and attempted to rank them according to value. The article was mocked for the complete lack of understanding of the factor of history and jewelry making. The reporter claimed that the Greville emerald kokosnik tiara was the most valuable piece. This tiara was constructed by Boucheron in 1921, and is fantastic piece of art deco jewelry, and undoubtedly the tiara has a great monetary value. But historically it is regarded as relatively young. Compared to for example the swedish cameo tiara that was made by Napoleon’ court jeweler Nitot in 1809. Each cameo cut by hand from agate by masters of cameo cutting such as Giuseppe Girometti, Vincenzo Catenacci and Filippo Rega . Each cameo taking about a year to cut and regarded as such works of art that the cameo cutters where allowed to sign the pieces. The material value of that piece is not impressive in carats. But in history and artistry it’s impossible to value. Hope my ramblings at least made some sense.

I liked the ruby tiara much better before Mary had it altered. Now it looks a bit too stiff and massive with all the elements bunched together. When Ingrid wore it, it had a lot more charm.
