It covers Churchill's early life, his beginnings in politics and his involvement in the Boer war, his capture and imprisonment by the Boers and his courageous escape and flight behind enemy lines to Portuguese East Africa. I was lucky enough to be born in 1951 so during my lifetime SIR. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL was prime minister. My father was born on Madeira Island, Portugal in 1915 and Churchill would spend many hours on Madeira painting! I have been to the resturant in Camara Del Lobos on Madeira. Well worth the visit. SIR. WINSTON has been one of my life’s heroes, even if he really didn’t like women. I also love the stories about Churchill’s determination to land with the troops onto the beaches of Normandy on D-DAY until the KING GEORGE VI has to tell him if he was going then the king would have to go as well. Naturally-- Churchill was persuaded not to go to protect the king. I also love the stories about how Churchill would try to get to the rooftops in order to witness the bombing of London by the Luftwaffe totally disregarding the danger to himself. The only person who had ANY INFLUENCE upon Churchill was his wife Clementine and mostly he did exactly what he wanted to do.

I absolutely admire Churchill and all that he stood for, but there's one area that disturbs me about his influence on the Queen and that is how Princess Margaret and Townsend's romance got throttled. I know the Queen Mother had her nasty hand in the background of all of this but I feel that the pressure by both Churchill and the Queen Mother was enough to influence the Queen to view their marriage in a negative light. I have never been fond of the spoiled Princess Margaret, but the pressure that was put to her to give him up was horrendous and unwarranted. The Queen was put in an untenable position and she was too new at the job to stand up to the both of them which I'm sure she would have done if it had happened later in her reign.

We Americans with senses of history understand there no CLEAR delineation between our countries and histories. First time I met the Queen (when I was in a Diplomatic position as a senior US Army officer) she said, "Colonel, I understand we're distant cousins." Which is true, since I'm a direct descendant of Henry VII of England and James V of Scotland. I was amazed someone had done that much research on me! However, I somehow maintained my poise and said, "Yes, Ma'am. Over 400 years ago. I'm not exactly a close relation." Then with her famous humor she said, "Well, if your forebears had remained, you'd no doubt still have a Peerage. But they didn't, and now you're an American and out of luck!" As is customary, however, she DID give me an honorary OBE when I left. It's not much in the big scheme of things, but one of many memories I'm fortunate to have. I'm Anglican/Episcopalian, and on the Sunday after her passing, our organist played,"I Vow To Thee, My Country" during the Eucharist. In her honor, that day, for the first time (and probably only time ever,) I wore the miniature "court-mounted" OBE and a British decoration I'd received after the Gulf War in her memory. I received quite a few awards and decorations in my life, but I think I've only felt "proud" of wearing any of them on that single occasion.

British War Cabinet Crisis May 26 - 28th 1940 - When the BEF were trapped at Dunkirk the initial estimate was that only 45,000 could be evacuated . France was nearly defeated , the Americans were maintaining their position of isolationism , and the Soviets had a non aggression pact with Hitler . Under these conditions , Lord Halifax was baited into meeting with the Italian Ambassador , who offered to mediate a peace agreement with Hitler . What followed over the next few days were a series of heated meetings . Facing the loss of much of the BEF , Lord Halifax wanted to explore negotiating terms with Hitler . Churchill said Hitler never honoured any agreement and would turn Britain into a slave state . In the end , Churchill did an end round on Halifax and was able to persuade the 25 member outer Cabinet to keep fighting . Had Churchill not been able to persuade the cabinet to keep fighting , Hitler would have released a much stronger Wehrmacht on the Soviets . Regardless of who won , either the Nazi's or Soviet's would have ruled nearly all of Europe , North Africa , the Middle East and Russia . The world would have become a different place . For this reason , the War Cabinet Crisis is one of the defining moments of the 20th Century . .

Mary his mother never forgave David for Abdicating but at the same time admitted to Elizabeth to Rule is a calling from God , so when Mary of Teck was pleading with David to consider Bertie's unpreparedness for King not to mention his health issues, I think Mary was pleading not as a Queen but as a mother in that moment, and as it went bertie had a short reign and his wife Elizabeth ( the queen mother) has been said to have smacked David across the face saying " You killed him, your to blame for this". A fascinating course of events indeed, Churchill, as First Lord was the man responsible for the dismal failure in Norway and as a result, he became, I did not say was elected, he became Prime Minister and in the process, created a new ministry, the Ministry of War and to take charge he named... Himself, of course and if you add to that the UK Emergency Powers (Defense) (Enabling) Acts of 1939 and 1940, you've pretty much got yourself a genuine dictator, in blood and toil which becomes quite handy, if you're going to refuse all peace offers sent your way.

Es importante mencionar que el ejército Rojo venció a los Alemanes, en territorio Alemán, no fue Estados Unidos, ni Inglaterra, (la bombas lanzadas al japón, fue después de rendirse los Japoneses, ése es otro trasfondo Americano)

The "looming nazi threat" was well past when Elizabeth was "thrust into the role of queen of England."

Elizabeth was always going to be Queen. She was in the line of succession. Had Edward not given up the crown, she would have become Queen in the 70s, perhaps.

No, she wasn't always going to be queen. There remained the possibility that Edward and Wallace would have had children themselves
@latin50411 ай бұрын
@@lostcamper they were both in their 40s when they got married. Even before Edward became king, Elizabeth was still 3rd in line to inherit the throne. Thus Elizabeth’s chances of becoming queen were at no point ever changed thus she was always going to be Queen except it might not have happened until the 70s.

@@latin504 well, you're just wrong sugar. Elizabeth at no point was expected to become queen until her uncle's abdication. Also, pregnancy is possible until menopause and I doubt that Wallace had gone through menopause at the age of 43
@latin50411 ай бұрын
@@lostcamper it’s obvious Edward never had plans to have kids. And for the kid to have taken her out of the direct line to the thrown, his heir would have had to been legitimate. Just like with William IV, Elizabeth was in direct line to inherit the throne. You didn’t add anything to the argument but speculation about him and Wallis having kids. They didn’t. As stands, she was always going to be Queen once her uncle passed away.

They were never going to allow Wallace to marry. So your challenge to my original claim has no leg to stand in this argument.
