In 1963, I saw Roy perform at Vestavia Country Club at a Frat Party after the Auburn/Alabama football game. I couldn’t believe it was him on a party room stage. I was up front. He was unbelievable. No studio enhancements. Just pure Roy. I’ll never forget his expressionless face and the sound that came out of his voice. He stood there, expressionless and hit notes that only most people could dream of. He was unbelievable on a tiny Country Club stage with a third-rate audio system. But, he was great and something I will take to my grave.

A Black & White Night is the greatest Roy Orbison concert there is. I still remember watching it on a series on concerts called "Cinemax Sessions", on the pay channel that also earned the nickname "Skinemax", because of their "Friday After Dark" programming, where they showed a lot of sexploitation flicks. There may not be a more beautiful male voice ever recorded. I think Roy is the best ever...I really can't think of any vocalist that rivals Roy. This is other worldly....touched by the hand of GOD. Antonio Salieri hated Mozart as he was the "chosen one"....Well, GOD made a new choice and it is Roy Orbison.

This man truly has two voices, a young one and old one. And he knows it! Watch him sing when he was younger and now and he can do that switcheroo no matter what era he was in. I think the original record has such a fast tempo that even in concert he hated it but in his older years when he could play at his leisure he sang this song as he really meant it to sung.

Look closely at the Boss when Roy is hitting those high notes at the end of the song. He does a little head shake in disbelief that Roy can still hit those notes all those years later, then the big ol' smile on his face. He looks like a kid who's just ecstatic to be playing with one of his idols. Roy still has the best voice of them all.

The reaction of the crowd when they realize, here they came to pay respects and hear the voice of days long ago, then they are there again. It's really him. It's really still him. Wish I could have been there but the recording does do it justice.
