As someone who's lived offgrid for 20 years, having temp sensors on the terminals is a really good idea. Can't count how many times a bad connection at the battery caused problems that went unnoticed until it got bad enough that the glow at night alerted me. I respect that you still published the video even when you screwed up and let the smoke out; LOL! Part of the definition of craftsmanship is ownership....even when you have an "ugly baby!" This is why so many companies utilize you as a proxy "proof engineer," and why I trust you implicitly! Also, resistance produces heat. I had a professor who stated 99% of all electrical problems are due to "connections." Temperature surveillance at the main external connections, is a brilliant method monitoring basic maintenance!

I bought an Epoch 36100H for my golf cart. Same packaging as RoyPow from the outside. I has a heater so I can charge below freezing. They advertize 100 Ah but in reality it is a 105Ah. nice to see them underestimate in their adveertizing instead of the other way. On /Off switch. Wifi enabled . Meter that alarms when you get low in power and a second alarm so you won't run out of power getting home. It can run up to 120 amps continuous and 200 for a very short time. it works for my 2002 EZGO TXT series cart with larger tires. Thanks Will for letting me see the quality of the next generation 36v golf cart battery.

Will, when I disconnect things from unknown manufacturers or in language is not familiar to me I take colored marker pans and on one side of the plug I put a line straight across the two pieces that way when I go to hook it back up I can quickly and easily see that I'm putting the right plug in the right orientation in the right place. Love the excitement! The marine battery looks really nice. And at $1300 for a 24V 100ah, that is still a super competitive price (compared to 12V 100ah). For a marine battery though … that’s outrageously cheap. Can’t wait for the capacity test. It’s most likely going to pass . Looks like this company makes batteries for industrial and construction equipment and vehicles. That’s a hard environment. I’m not surprised about the consistent build quality.

Rubber on the heat sink fins and batteries is probably intended to sink the heat to the case. Try checking the thermal conductivity of the rubber or rubber foam. Air gapping heat sink fins inside of a sealed case is a recipe for disaster too. I suspect the material is working as heat sink compound.
@SkypowerwithKarl
@SkypowerwithKarl 2 жыл бұрын
Will, what would have been interesting is to have looked for heat on the outside of the case where the bms resides. That goo on the heat sinks may actually move the heat to the outside world instead of a trapped dead air space within at best heating the batteries. I don’t know if you have one, but I highly recommend the FLIR thermal cameras. I use a dongle for the iPhone and it works great.

It's really quite easy to build a 48v solar charger. All you need is a few solar panels in series and a 48v capable charge controller. Victron makes many charge controllers that go all the way from 12v to 48v. I use one. Right now I'm running 12v, but if my inverter ever burns up, I have enough LiFePo4 cells and the charge controller to switch to 48v.

I was expecting to need to to use my 10amp power supply to finish the last 10% to balence the cells but the Aims fully charged them. I have not load tested them yet as I am waiting my Victron shunt. The cells are within .004 of one another on both batteries at average voltage of 3.575v on one battery and 3.355 on the second battery.

Well my experience is that there is a glitch when using the Roy Pow app. I read 74ah then 100ah. This happened several times on three different batteries. When monitoring using my Victron 500amp shunt 100ah was observed during charge and discharge with no variation. So I believe at this point the batteries are good and problem is in the app.

I could be mistaken but that rubberized material looks like it could be some sort of potting material which could help with thermal transfer to the outside of the case instead of the heat being trapped inside the air in the case, would be interesting to see performance results with and without that material to see what the temperature difference is at full load until it is completely discharged, maybe the company could send you one with and without that material for testing

@Kfrankie46
@Kfrankie46 2 жыл бұрын
@@ralphbell1786 it helps more than you think, if it was open air it would create a pocket of hot air and because there is no airflow it would stay around the heatsink area with very little transfer to the plastic, I agree, if heat on that heatsink is an issue it would be good to see the heatsink extend to the outside of the box but still be watertight
@LiquidTurbo
@LiquidTurbo Жыл бұрын
@@Kfrankie46 No one wants metal outside of the battery except at the terminals. I agree with your analysis. Heat transfer dynamics, it doesn't look good from the afar, but having this heatsink to distribute heat to a casing (even if plastic), is far superior than air trapped inside. One can do the calculations to figure this out, particularly if the potting material has a high heat transfer C value. There's more than meets the eye here with the heatsink design.

That heat sink is probably designed that way intentionally to allow the heat to exit the enclosed system through the battery casing itself. Otherwise, a heatsink in an enclosed system touching only the enclosed air can only reliably exchange heat with that trapped air.

The rubber on the BMS heatsink in the cheap battery is probably still better at conducting heat to the outside that air would be, i.e. by filling the heatsink fins up with the rubber glue they likely achieve at least a certain amount of thermal coupling to the outside world. Of course, being a sealed system, it will always be difficult to get rid of the heat and a heatsind without fins that is directly glued to the outside surface of the battery casing would likely be the better alternative.

Thanks for investigating this trolling motor battery. I am in the market to switch from AGM to LiFePO4 and your tear-down videos have been very informative. My only request is that you add Ingress Protection testing to your mix of tests. In a marine environment I would like to see if any water "gets in". Maybe, before you open it up, you could spray it with a water hose (IP65) or submerse in a bucket (IP67), then see if any water is inside when you open it up. What do you think about this suggestion? thanks again,

When you started taking apart the first battery I thought "he really should test the battery first just in case it gets damaged during the tear down." I wonder if the temp sensors on the terminals are actually better since it's a direct thermal bridge to the cell electrodes and potentially gives a more accurate reading of the internal temps than the outside of the cell case?

Agree. If it was me, I'd def do capacity test before teardown. Probably several cycles. You never know if something you do could affect the unit somehow.

I'd love to see you do some of our batteries made available here in Australia such as the Deep Cycle Systems batteries or the iTechWord batteries which seem to look a bit like a Chins battery you have had on the Channel before. I can't imagine the testing you do is cheap but love the content you put out. Always super informative 👍

He probably won't, our country is too small as a percentage of his user base to justify it. Personally I think itechworld are just overpriced, can get the same batteries much cheaper. Like kickass they're just a rebranding and marketing company

While a quick review can sometimes help when making a purchasing decision they're really not thorough enough to make an informed decision. I bought the Powerurus 12v 100ah battery and for the most part it works fine. However, one behavior of the BMS is troubling. After charging to 100% using a Victron SCC (LifePO4 preset) "full charge protection" is triggered and the chargeMOS turns off. The battery needs to drop to less than 70% (in app) for the chargeMOS to turn on again. While it will probably be OK for my use, there have been good solar days where I prefer it topped off. Here's the response from support: "Because the battery has not yet reached the overcharge recovery stage, it is not allowed to charge. This is designed to avoid repeated charging of the battery. Charging will resume only when the voltage is close to falling below 3.3V. Please charge the battery again when the voltage is close to 3.3V."

The undocumented "communication" port is possibly an internal quality control test port and not meant for consumer usage. Update: In an Amazon image for their 24V 80Ah I see a cable attached to a "whistling" battery monitor to display the SoC, so possibly it's for a similar device that they haven't started marketing yet.

Was looking at the links to buy them. Said discount would be taken when you put in the cart. No discount. Then the 200ah was $100 more than 2 of the 100ah. Ugg. Still a great price and they look great. But there's always a bit of a catch. I'd love 2 of the 200ah for my van. Power everything and have removable solar panels to charge them while the van sits in the shade.

I'm pretty sure RoyPow is owned by EVE, which may explain the quality. Having that heatsink covered in rubber is crap, why would you insulate a heat sink?? That same BMS was in the RoyPow-branded battery that I tested. Something else had it too that surprised me, might have been the LionEnergy - I'll have to look.

Will-P you need to always film the battery test first then do the teardown. You can edit it later if you want the Teardown to be the first thing shown. I cannot tell you how many times Dave Jones motto "Don't Turn it On, Tear It Apart" came back to bite him in the ass when the unit would not power on after reassembly. He later on stopped tearing down stuff without first testing it.

As of right now, 08/13/22, their 24v200AH is $900. If trying to run 24v200AH you are paying more than a EG4LL. Not an expect but seem server batteries the way to go for building any kind of a decent battery bank and the smaller batteries are better for a single battery system.

Outside Terminal Heat Sensors without low temp cut off makes sense since the terminals can be cold from the environoment but inside cells are still warm enough. Detecting terminal overheating due to poor connection quality with loose screws and maybee overcurrent drawn is realy smart. As long as the inside cell Temp Sensors cut of charging below Zero all is good. Only one sensor for low temp cutoff is still a bummer. since if this one fails you dont have a spare. The Heatsink in the Rubber gives some body heattransfer to the outside. Better as just air arround inside the thight case working as thermal insulation. (Some newer Toolbatterypacks do this with the Plasticasing arround cells. Eliminating Airgaps between cells and outside shell even a poor thermal conductor like plastic is better as just air. The "cheap" encasing is nothing to worrie about as long as it matches outside dimentions of standard batteries abd got carring straps. As you see on the outborad batterie case the mounting wing take space some might not have in their batterie compartment. It would be nice to have a Inside x ray like view of the batterie for the customers or a clue where the bms heatsink is. This side is the point where you might put watercooling pipes for the batterie pack or press it against a tankwall or you might put a thicker metal plate (aluminium) onto an encasing as a heatsink.

13:40 "...and I think it's kind of silly...": Try looking at the terminals with a thermo imaging camera. At high currents, especially if the terminals are beginning to loosen or corrode, their temperature will go up dramatically.

Fun to watch you pull these apart. Hey Will can you look at moseworth batteries, I have a couple 200ah 12v running and would like to buy a couple more and would appreciate your feedback on the build quality before spending the cash on them. I believe moseworth made smaller lithium packs for the rc market. These 200ah are sold for trolling motors and are at a pretty low price point on Amazon. I appreciate your poking around the market for all of us trying to go off grid.
