As someone who's lived offgrid for 20 years, having temp sensors on the terminals is a really good idea. Can't count how many times a bad connection at the battery caused problems that went unnoticed until it got bad enough that the glow at night alerted me. Battery teminals are a common place for bad connections.

I respect that you still published the video even when you screwed up and let the smoke out; LOL! Part of the definition of craftsmanship is ownership....even when you have an "ugly baby!" This is why so many companies utilize you as a proxy "proof engineer," and why I trust you implicitly! Also, resistance produces heat. I had a professor who stated 99% of all electrical problems are due to "connections." Temperature surveillance at the main external connections, is a brilliant method monitoring basic maintenance!

Love the excitement! The marine battery looks really nice. And at $1300 for a 24V 100ah, that is still a super competitive price (compared to 12V 100ah). For a marine battery though … that’s outrageously cheap. Can’t wait for the capacity test. It’s most likely going to pass . Looks like this company makes batteries for industrial and construction equipment and vehicles. That’s a hard environment. I’m not surprised about the consistent build quality.

@@Gold63Beast They're really not. I have 2x100AH LiFePo4 batteries for my trolling motor. They cost $700. Don't need the On/Off switch at all. Can buy one for $25. Bluetooth? Why? Any monitor/shunt will tell you how much power you have left. I have gone on 6-7 hours for 2 days and not had to recharge my cheapos. Once, my outboard had issues and I had to troll 2.5 hrs back to my landing spot on the second day and still did not have any issues. 8 months and counting without a single problem. Will, when I disconnect things from unknown manufacturers or in language is not familiar to me I take colored marker pans and on one side of the plug I put a line straight across the two pieces that way when I go to hook it back up I can quickly and easily see that I'm putting the right plug in the right orientation in the right place. I bought an Epoch 36100H for my golf cart. Same packaging as RoyPow from the outside. I has a heater so I can charge below freezing. They advertize 100 Ah but in reality it is a 105Ah. nice to see them underestimate in their adveertizing instead of the other way. On /Off switch. Wifi enabled . Meter that alarms when you get low in power and a second alarm so you won't run out of power getting home. It can run up to 120 amps continuous and 200 for a very short time. it works for my 2002 EZGO TXT series cart with larger tires. Will, what would have been interesting is to have looked for heat on the outside of the case where the bms resides. That goo on the heat sinks may actually move the heat to the outside world instead of a trapped dead air space within at best heating the batteries. I don’t know if you have one, but I highly recommend the FLIR thermal cameras. I use a dongle for the iPhone and it works great.

It's really quite easy to build a 48v solar charger. All you need is a few solar panels in series and a 48v capable charge controller. Victron makes many charge controllers that go all the way from 12v to 48v. I use one. Right now I'm running 12v, but if my inverter ever burns up, I have enough LiFePo4 cells and the charge controller to switch to 48v.

Are there other LifePO4"Marine Batteries" on the market that you are aware of, besides Mastervolt, which are un-payable? I am considering to recommend a change from AGM battery banks on a boat of a friend of mine in the Caribbean and all these normally found soft metal (rusting) enclosures wouldn´t be recommendable due to corrosion...

Thanks for investigating this trolling motor battery. I am in the market to switch from AGM to LiFePO4 and your tear-down videos have been very informative. My only request is that you add Ingress Protection testing to your mix of tests. In a marine environment I would like to see if any water "gets in". Maybe, before you open it up, you could spray it with a water hose (IP65) or submerse in a bucket (IP67), then see if any water is inside when you open it up. What do you think about this suggestion? thanks again,

Just bought a roypow 30 amp battery. The battery I received is below 3 volts on delivery, and obviously used. It has abrasions and residue on the face of it.

I generally mark parts and take pictures when I take something apart for the first time. Get some stickers and lable thing with numbers, letters, or colors. While taking lots of pictures with your phone. Saves a lot of hassle when putting it back together.

Rubber on the heat sink fins and batteries is probably intended to sink the heat to the case. Try checking the thermal conductivity of the rubber or rubber foam. Air gapping heat sink fins inside of a sealed case is a recipe for disaster too. I suspect the material is working as heat sink compound.

The rubber on the BMS heatsink in the cheap battery is probably still better at conducting heat to the outside that air would be, i.e. by filling the heatsink fins up with the rubber glue they likely achieve at least a certain amount of thermal coupling to the outside world. Of course, being a sealed system, it will always be difficult to get rid of the heat and a heatsind without fins that is directly glued to the outside surface of the battery casing would likely be the better alternative.

Fun to watch you pull these apart. Hey Will can you look at moseworth batteries, I have a couple 200ah 12v running and would like to buy a couple more and would appreciate your feedback on the build quality before spending the cash on them. I believe moseworth made smaller lithium packs for the rc market. These 200ah are sold for trolling motors and are at a pretty low price point on Amazon. I appreciate your poking around the market for all of us trying to go off grid.

Their website has so many misspelled words that I would not buy from them because I would question their quality. My first thought was it was a Chinese company and if the quality if their battery is the same as the quality of their website, it would not be worth buying. This review changed my mind.

RoyPow just sent me their 30Ah. It barely pulled capacity and I plan on tearing it down this weekend. Hoping that it looks as good as their 100Ah! I did teardown their 6Ah for fish finders. It was a mess, the cell holders were all gooey like they were melting.

Care to explain why they are gooey? Think why they made “worm proof boxes” with different makeup due to plasticizer incompatibility…
@iceholepower8012
@iceholepower8012 Жыл бұрын
@@fishhuntadventure When I opened it up, there was a strong chemical smell. I think the plastic (ABS maybe) cell holders were melting because of the presence of acetone in the adhesive. In the 3d printing world we call it vapor smoothing to get rid of the layer lines. I am speculating that was what was going on, but I could be wrong.

Hey Will. Quick question. What was that power supply you were using to charge the battery with 49a going into the battery? I could use one of those. Thanks! I like the smaller variable power supply also.

Great review, & I think it's time to add the final testing as you are getting heated batteries and not testing that function. Here is why. Some of these heated batteries cut off the output current when there isn't enough input current for the heaters, effectively leaving you with no power at all... Is that true of your now smoked 24v trolling battery?
