Top 5 MMOs to Avoid in 2023

So there's always a lot of hype around new MMORPGs coming out at the beginning of every year and a ton of people telling you what might be worth your time. But what about the stuff that's NOT worth your precious shekels?
This video is all about those unjizztastic games that maybe dont deserve a swing at your ever-shrinking wallet. Moreover, these MMOs might not be worth your time.
Something to consider though, is that some of the stuff I've put on this list is here not because it's going to potentially be a bad game but because it's not actually going to be an MMO at all but has been marketed as one, so keep that in mind.

Great video but I must come to the defence of Throne & Liberty on one point, the "infinite number of players" is a pretty clear mistranslation, they mean "countless numbers of players" (and youtube's transcript says this as well). They have said they expect servers to be about 3k to 5k. Whilst there's obviously reason to be sceptical, this exact reason isn't really one.

Another fellow L2 vet here! Played from Prelude through Gracia, on Hindemith (before it merged with Gustin). Looks like T&L is turning out exactly how this video describes... maybe even worse. Wish I could I say I was surprised. NCSoft is a soulless money farming machine anymore. After how they destroyed L2 with GoD, telling us "we totes won't put any pay-to-win in the cash shop because it's a PvP MMO and it would be unfair!"... only to turn around and do exactly that - starting from GoD's launch. Nah. I don't trust them with anything anymore. I wouldn't trust them if they told me it was windy during a hurricane.

Just found your content today and I'm loving it. I just started Black Desert and I was very hesitant due to pay-to-win and pvp aspects, but I got to say, it really isn't as I bad as I thought. I've really gotten into it and haven't been tempted to purchase anything yet. You can buy cash shop items in the player market place. That, and there's hard caps of how much cash shop items you can sale. Someone broke down the math in one of the reviews. I'm, more or less, curious what your opinion is?

I use the Rode Wireless Go II for recordings and then just EQ it through my editing software. Keep in mind that depending on what country you're in, it can get quite pricey. I got lucky and managed to pick mine up second hand. If you're on a tight budget and looking to start out there's nothing wrong with using something like a blue yeti. You don't have to get the most expensive mic in the world, just make sure you're not dealing with unmanageable interference

this was so funny, but also really eye opening. I actually didn't realize ncsoft is so predatory, I only vaguely remembered them being publisher of gw2, and gw2's gem shop is actually super reasonable since I can convert gold into gems - several years ago when I played more, I bought all my gem store QoL stuff with gold I collected in game. didnt spend a single dime aside from buying the game/expansions. I had no idea most/all of rest of ncsoft's games are that predatory p2w. i...I guess I should feel glad/lucky that gw2 managed to retain that even after all these years. also should be glad ncsoft didn't axe it already for not being profitable 😂

Well, no. I'm pretty sure it was clear, at least perfectly clear for me since the start that Crimson Desert is like the Prequel to Black Desert and will be a singleplayer game with a deep story, and would possibly eventually have a lobby where you might show your progress to other players, but it will never be an actual multiplayer game of any sort.

Crimson Desert was confirmed not to be a true mmorpg ages ago. Also, I gotta be honest emptying out your bank account to progress on BDO isn't really goinna do much these days. Most the relevant PVP is all gear capped with really low beginner stats, p2w has never been efficient money wise and even less so now because the caps/catch up mechanics/etc. As much as I would love to shit on BDO, and there are a ton of things to give it shit for, it's really actually incredibly f2p friendly and in a great spot right now. Drop $50 one time purchase for the tent then youre cozy. Even all the pay-for-convenience shit isnt really required anymore because they give you a ton of it for free and constantly hand out more for events.

Yes all of these titles are sketchy, but I was expecting to see Blue Protocol on the list too. The devs openly admitted its going to be P2W and on top of that cosmetics will be sold only in loot boxes. Its going to be only 4 classes, very little content and will be released on all platforms including mobile. A list of existing MMOs to avoid maybe next?

About Throne and Liberty and those million players, if we look at Lineage saga games they probably mean 100 "whales" each with 10.000 bots running on their personal NASA servers and like 10-15.000 normal players trying to scam each other for the scraps :)

Slightly off-topic, but the (not) MMMORPG confusion is in my opinion a perfect example of the blurry lines we have with that genre. 10-20 years back it was easy: You can play it with many people online -> it is an MMORPG - or maybe something else instead of RPG (like MMOFPS). Today we rarely have games that don't have any online aspect to it. There are a lot of games that offer player hubs while the actual gameplay wiil take place with smaller groups in instanced areas. This even applies to some of the older MMORPGs (like Guild Wars 1) which I would rebrand in hindsight as "Online RPGs", dropping at least the "massively". Back on topic, I still hope that Corepunk and Throne & Liberty turn out to be good and prove to not belong on this list. But the concerns are sadly valid.

After FFXIV and Guild Wars 2, companies are just lazy to not build a single player like experience within a MMORPG environment. It's possible to satisfy greek and troyans. (about Crimson Desert). After my delusion with Lost Ark, i will wait a few years before i try Throne and Liberty (TL). The one thing that i really loved about Lineage2 was his design of cities and races, such thing is not present on TL.

Modern asian mmo's "developers" are incapable of creating anything that worth your time. Those guys unleashed so much "potential" on our simple "non asian" brains. I never thought that i would witness such a change of development model. Most of those "creations" are nothing more than "inspired" by great western titles and build with UE4 asset store materials.
