@IgnisAchilles9 ай бұрын
All valid points here. I mean comparing it to the landscape of 2012, where the average MMO player was not to expect any scripted story at all most of it was maybe feeling fine. But still, all the points you made very much apply to any kind of storytelling. If a story itself does not care to give its characters or previous plot points any relevancy, why should you exactly care? And I don't think these points in particular are very unpopular, because right after the Base Game story they radically changed their approach to story telling to use a more concise character cast and to not jump so much back and forth between plot activities, to keep it a bit general

Just for a fun little lore fact: The events of the base game story take place within one year of the peace treaty between the charr and the humans. At the end of the conflict, the charr were actively sieging the city of Ebonhawke, which is just southwest of Random Forest #87. So the location of the peace talks and the scene they've set up there is more representative of the "Both sides just freshly put down arms and are meeting for the first few times" idea instead of some long going diplomatic thing. It's still a pretty random location for something so pivotal, but I like to think that makes more sense of it at least.

I never really had a problem with the dungeons. As long as you create the LFG yourself, you can set the conditions. If it's clear in the LFG post that you want to watch the cutscenes, people will wait for you to finish watching them. After getting groups to help me while I experience the story, I've gone back quite a few times to the dungeons to clear them with new players that wanted to experience the story as well. The social aspect of this game is truly one of it's biggest strengths. You'll have a couple people that are a bit "elitist" but the general community is completely happy with helping out newer players as long as they ask.
@lordflunder24 күн бұрын
hm, but unless you run with only people under lvl 80 (for the story version) i still think it's a very different experience from vanilla. back then the game didn't have dedicated healer specs, less stat combinations to choose from and most importantly, not the powercreep we have now thanks to all the expansions. dungeons (as well as fractals) were quite challenging back then, somthing you wont be able to experience today unless you put alot of deliberate limitations to your whole group.

The basic problem with the story (that a lot of players never quite realise) is that you're Dr. Watson, not Sherlock Holmes. I was a huge GW1 fan, mainly because of the darker, more serious tone of the world. Everything felt much more mysterious and there were many great fan theories back in those days about lore. The main story was generally much more bleak, while not having the best VA, it was still much more mature than anything you will find in GW2. There's a 1000 things I could mention and talk about that GW1 does better in its story and worldbuilding than GW2, but I don't want to write a schizopost longer than the transcript of this video. I still love the game though, it's incredibly fun and has many enjoyable systems within it. I just can't stand the story, it's the only thing that consistently bores me so much that I want to quit, especially when some important things are LOCKED behind story, like the legendary amulet.

Cool vid, and awesome jokes! On the matter of the story starting out on "local issues" before moving on to the main "kill Zhaitan" plotline later, unlike many games/MMOs GW2 really goes out of its way to avoid the "you are the Chosen One/already a big deal/tragic character out for vengeance" tropes. A lot of players tend to miss this and only realise it later on. You literally start out as a random person, with an above average ability to smack things into submission, and an inclination to head into the fight against the Elder Dragons once you're ready for it (Only the Sylvari have a definitive "you're gonna fight Zhaitan" angle, and then only due to the way Wyld Hunts work). But as the Sylvari player character says right after you wake up from the Dream "one does not simply awaken and rush off to fight a dragon". You start out local, dealing with local issues and gradually building-up your skills and your reputation (this is in line with you gaining access to more skills etc as you level). That reputation later gets you recommended to act on behalf of your local leader in liasing with the three Orders on a problem, and you then get a chance to do a trial run with to see how they operate before you choose which to join. Once you join them, just like before you're building your skills and earning your way up the ranks in the Order you went with. You've joined the bigger fight, but you're still a long way from fighting the dragons. By this point lorewise it's obvious to all around you that you're not just "above average" in terms of talent etc, you're becoming pretty darn strong and are a name to watch as you rocket your way up the ranks. It's this strength, skill, and reputation that then lands you in the position reputation-wise (at the last part of the lvl 60 chapter) that the "you are a big deal/chosen one" tropes start out with. Except you're not doing what you're doing cos someone said you're the chosen one, and you're not given the rank you get because of some daft oracle or such. You're doing it because you darn-well earned your way up to it and heck no are you going to let Zhaitan continue to threaten all life on Tyria. In such your character has taken a more realisim-based route from "local hero/known face" to "known to multiple nations, highly-ranked member of huge dragon-killing alliance" :)

They removed the map later and many years later remade it, altho without a underwater part anymore. I personally think, they have a solid basis for UW combat, but have to change some annoying things, like the headgear having it's own rune slot, fine tune it afterwards and maintain it, but sadly they insta dropped it (they do/did insta drop a lot of things as recent as a few years at best now)

Let me spoiler you, that will drop off in all following story. Somewhat understandable, since writing unique dialogue for all races, including the personality system, would absolutely shatter ANet's capabilities, but still. During the first 20 levels, the Sylvari character was naive, optimistic and curious, the Asura player character is smart, cunning and boastful, the Charr are hardened warriors, the Norn wants to become a legend and the Human character is boring. They were unique. Or at least partially so. But after lvl 20, the character becomes pretty bland. Good things are good, bad things are bad, they got the personality as the color beige.

Highly recommend getting GW1 with all the expansions on sale, you can run the whole game story solo (or create party with NPCs) and you understand a bit more of the story. The dungeon stories become much cooler. GW1 now is almost like a single player game with a party system. (Various genocides occur, lots of necromancy and death pacts. So the venue cant be some random room in a random neutral city (though LA would the logical and only logical choice), but has to be right in the middle between the two faction's capitals. Besides, they need some stupid danger to occur, otherwise we wouldn't have anything to do. Unless you want a heart quest where you destribute bandages for the numerous papercuts and deliver stacks of documents to their rightful but hopelessly overworked owner. "World of Workcraft", baby!! XD I suppose a former GW player (yes, GW, the original, the real one, no substitudes XD) I had quite a good understanding about the world and its stakes. Not to mention that I read the books, too, so there's that... Never the less... I didnt really mind the story that much, I found it even quite good (but there again, I was used to Retail WoW at that point, sooooo... yeah) : the setbacks, build-up and journey to the final boss... it was quite memorable. But yeah, that was back in 2012... a long a** time ago when the leveling and story experiance was quite different. Unfortunately I couldnt even tell you: I flat out forgot ^^° I only remember that you could progress the story right after the tutorial (and if you were 5 levels below the story mission, well you had some leveling to do first...) and that the talents actually had short descriptions about what they did and what you could expect. For whatever reason they removed that... Right... so where's the next video? ^^

As someone who played Girdle Weakness 2 when it launched, I can say that the dungeons were much worse than they are today. Imagine that boss fights can be overcome by simply releasing if you die, running back, and continuing the fight, so long as at least one party member remains alive at any given time. Or a boss fight where you and one other player take turns throwing a rock at the boss from either side, knocking it down each time and preventing it from doing any of its mechanics. Or trash fights where the mobs knock down players every two seconds, but there are so many of them that you need extreme coordination of stability buffs to be able to defeat them (that, or just release and run back and win through eventual attrition). I was really looking forward to dungeons back when Gee Whiz 2 first release, but it was by far the most disappointing part of the game. ANet eventually abandoned dungeons in favour of Fractals, so even they saw it as a lost cause (which is really too bad because a rework of them could make many of them fun).

I also agree that I'd LOVE for them to go back and revamp the base game, but they'll never do it. They don't have enough resources like WoW or FF do. They would have to basically quit expansions for a couple years at least, and they need the income. Plus the last time they did that (remaking living world season 1 to be replayable, because it was originally designed to be live one-and-done updates), only the diehards were happy. Everyone else was upset because "content drought", even though they were doing something and releasing content, but it was old content being reimplemented.

From an 11y veteran player -- what u describe here as The Problem of GW2 is, I'd say, the best thing about GW2 for me. I'm given some (quite various) skills and a world to run around with them -- ty anet u're NOT shoving ur story in my face more than necessary! Or, actually, u do but not much, it's quite bearable. I would trully hate lvling in this game if I had more of that 'connection to story', 'caring about secondary characters', 'significant story progress'. I wanna play a game coz if I wanted to get a good story I'd pick a book ty, that's where good stories are. As it happens, espec with expansions, year, the story becomes later more intricate and palpable, but we r now an established character in the world. On starters, like before hitting some lvl 60+, I really need some deep connection with my inventory space and weapon skills and utilities. I'm extremely happy with GW2 'main quest line' being unobtrusive as it is, and even more so for underlvl chars. )

Great take on the clunk of the GW2 leveling journey. Did someone take you on a magical journey to see Tequatl the Sunless, The Shatterer or any of the other world bosses?

I absolutely love the game, but my first leveling made me quit twice before I set foot in the first expansion. I agree with you on how the world and lore is rich, but the solo story delieveries are subpar to put it nicely. Hope you stick with GW2 to experience the masterpiece that is Heart of Thorns, it'll be worth it.

If you do the dungeons at the appropriate level with other people at similar level then there's still some real difficulty to it (specifically in Explorable Mode). Especialy if your group isn't just a bunch of twinks. Btw, do Story mode of dungeons, then do Explorable Mode. (In general it's going inside the same dungeon 4 times and doing different paths with different enemies/bosses). Also, i'm betting he found Tomes of Knowledge or Crafting in the end there... hmm. I'm assuming Boosting is to be ignored.

I did the main story just at release. I remember binging this game for few days, it was longer than most mmos I played and hence the level progression was slower I was feeling like doing mostly map completions with msq lagging behind. What kept me in the game was the mechanics, however I left 2 weeks after reaching max after doing few events and pvp. The economy was toxic and most importantly: there was absolutely nothing to realistically do in the game or project yourlself into doing. I rediscovered it 2 years ago or so and I love current gw2, it's unperfect but I have always things to do and people to interact with, raid and t4s are fun and pvp too. Yes it's p2p in a hardway but what I spent on it is very ok despite beeing generous with myself in games nowadays(I bought inventory, bank tabs, and all the shits that do not make me feel like a f2p pinoy player). Gw2 imho is not really p2w in the p2w sense of things, it is p2necessary convenience, like you bought the game and got scammed with a clause saying "if you do not pay for that your experience will be crap". Ofc most streamers are delusionnal about it, I mean those same dudes make cash shop items tier lists on the side, they're degrading :).

GW2 must be weird af to anyone who didn't play GW1, lore-wise. GW1 shows Human-Charr conflict and sets up the other 3 races pretty well. I have like 20 years worth of investment into the story but I 100% understand why someone would be like "who are you and why should I care?!?!" for the entire 1-80 experience. 🤷🏾♀️ I ended up beating Zhaitan in the mid 60's and after the core story ends the game goes "well you better get to level 80 or you can't play any expansions or living world". 😂 I ended up crafting those final levels bc my main is an Elementalist and made of paper. When I went for map completion I discovered that every map has it's own story and those dynamic events actually advance it. 😢 So I enjoyed all those stories at max level and was sad to have missed them earlier. The maps with a world boss will always complete the meta right after reset but for some maps it's tough. I can't wait to see the next video. I would love to hear your opinion on the meatier core world bosses like Tequatl and Triple Trouble.

You can level up super fast just by killing random neutral enemies around the zone.

Anet's only interest in Tyria is to block sneaky work arounds of their moronic jumping puzzles, other glitches have been reported for a decade and still don't get fixed. Also good luck with group events in Tyria for ? 20 hours per day unless it involves a daily. That's not where the money is.

A thing about the old dungeons... they are extremely dated. And one might argue... well then anet should update it. Anet fired the original team and apparently that is undocumented spaghetti code. They apparently don't know how. If they try to change something in there, it will likely mess something else up elsewhere.

No, they dont, its just that the powercreep over the years make them much easier, buy they are still designed to be done in a group.

During Vanilla times you got the story quests at lower levels. It's a more recent change that they only start at level 10. However, even then I felt that the leveling process was extremely boring because after the first couple of zones you realise that you're doing the exact same things, just packaged in different visuals and beyond level 35 ish, the levels are just there for the sake of levels. The original Guild Wars had just 20 levels and you got there relatively quickly and then you could just throw yourself at any content. In any case, the entirely boring leveling process made me quit the game. I came back after a long while and because characters get birthday presents every year since their creation (with items that allow skipping levels) and gaining tomes of knowledge (click to gain one level), I never have to level a new character anymore. I still do the main story on my main for expansions but I never put any other characters through that. The story does get better but I still don't give a rat's ass about any of the npc's. I play GW2 still but not for the story.

Dungeons can't progress much during a cutscene, so you're not losing anything there. Can also look for people who can take the story part of it at least easy XD I think the core story was fine when I did it.

As a GW2 veteran (been playing since launch) I love nothing more than to help new players, talk about the GW2 lore and do low lvl dungeons to help out new players. I get that your videos are just 'hot takes' and I do enjoy the banter but if you just put "no skips" in LFG when looking for a group you would actually get to enjoy the cutscenes. People would wait for you. You think lvl 80 players are joining low lvl players for dungeons because of the loot? You can make 20x as much gold per hour easily. Oh and the personal story actually sets up the dungeon story and progresses as you progress through the dungeons. And some of the personal story will make more sense later. When you've learned more about the rest of the lore the puzzle pieces suddenly fall together! :)

One of the biggest issues with GW2 story telling is all the cool shit is outside the MSQ and/or is from the first game and is alluded to which is only really cool if you know about the story being alluded to.
