how light perceives time? well from the moment its born to its end it already saw the end of the universe. So When we die is like when we weren't born yet, 13 billion years happened in a instant before us. And the entire remaining time of the universe will be just gone as soon as we die too. So just like light, when we die, we see the end of the universe. And in the meantime, our loved ones that are gonne just in stand by, already saw the end of the universe relative to them, and just waiting for us to live and enjoy the rest of our journey

Son: A star just fell from the sky. Laughing Bull: That is not an ordinary star, my son. That star is the tear of a warrior. Son: What warrior is it? Laughing Bull: A lost soul who has finished his battles somewhere on this planet. This scene always gets me whenever I watch Cowboy Bebop and this song is a huge reason why. The music is really allowed to take center stage in this episode and it turns an already emotional scene into one that I can't help but tear up at every time I watch it or hear this song and think about it.

As I watched the original TV series in 1998 in Japan (restricted 11 stories, then authentic 26 stories), I can tell you that the last thing Laughing Bull said to his boy was different. Instead, he said: 「グレートスピリットを信じられなかった哀れな魂」 "The pitiful soul who couldn't believe in the Great Spirit.."

This song has always reminded me of the word "Nostalgia" The beginning is the, quite typical in this show, soul-crushing-yet-beautiful city jazz that reminds me of the everyday grind, the emptiness you feel after the long week's work and the allure of the civilization, the possibilities, the beauty and stillness of the city at night. And then the song transitions into... ...Peaceful tribal music. The aura of community, belonging and ease. Now that I think about it it's not a coincidence this song's titled "Space Lion". Those two parts, Space-y sad jazz and tribal Lion are having a conversation about "Is the future really better than the past? Or is that just nostalgia talking?" ...And then you get to the end, where both parts meshed together in perfect harmony. Goosebumps. Just pure beauty.

When this song hit at the finale... waterfalls. 😭 Yoko Kanno is such a dope and legendary composer/artist. If you haven't seen the original animated series, it's def worth a watch! It's a classic for sure, and the music really brings it to life. Ghost in the Shell (1995) is another anime film and later series ('00s) Kanno composed for. Lots of great tracks to choose from there. As for Cowboy Bebop, I gotta recommend "Tank!". It's the opening song for the series, and just a really great jazz track in general by The Seatbelts and Kanno. I think you'd enjoy that one. Kanno composes solo a lot of the time, with collabs here and there, but for Cowboy Bebop she collabed with jazz group The Seatbelts for the tracks with live instrumentation. This reaction was a weird one for me, because I literally just got a hankering for hearing this song again (it's been a while), and was just curious if anybody reacted to it. How the planets align. 😆 Pretty niche for reactions, so I thought it was an ez no-go. lol Glad to see it hit the same spot in you as it did me! This one is hands-down my favorite off the OST. The rest of them are excellent, but this one just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. 😊 And a little bittersweet, if you know the show (no spoilers lol). Edit: Nvm, I totally skipped over the part where you said you did Tank already. Can't believe I missed that one! D'oh! :p

Here's a few thoughts. Space Lion stands out because of the spacing, the odd but slow pacing of the song. With the syncopation at times i feel its not 4/4 time... Which gives that awesome kind of african cadence. In a weird way the space from the title is about how this song slows down. Its much emptier than the other seatbelt songs which are chaotic with layers upon layers jib jabbing in and out. This song more than others feels... intentional in every note.

Space Lion, what a piece. I hope you do a couple from the movie, it's hard to imagine them without the excellent animations they go so well with! And if be interested in if the animations match how the track feels in reaction 🤓

It's kinda nice you listened o the two Seatbelt's songs in order. Tank! is the show's opening, and Space Lion is the final song of the final episode, leading into the end credits for not just the show, but the series... and, admittedly, my favorite song of the series. Such a beautiful song.

The opening makes me think of the sax song from the original blade runner movie

Your analysis is so spot on and it says a lot about the song that the essence of the scene it accompanies is evident purely from the music. you haven't seen the visuals but a man who has had truly life altering hardships strives for his revenge, almost succeeds but ultimately fails and the only witness to his effort is a stranger, who despite not knowing him knows the people he fought and understands how brave he was to even try. He honours his dying wish of launching him into space so his ship containing his body will crash into Saturn's moon titan. A mix of hope amd sadness, glory and honour and, futility and ultimate peace all run through the song at points in time with the events unfolding on screen. Its a eulogy to a brave, flawed, ultimately failed yet poignant and well loved warrior who fails yet deserves to have a glorious end and gets it only after death. You caught that in your analysis purely from the music. A+ man

I appreciate you man. A year late but just found this channel. As an independent musician who has appreciated this music for almost two decades i really appreciate seeing someone else getting goosebumps. Recognition where it's due. And yoko has always been a big influence for me. Even though I spent my compositions on mostly metal and noise ambient. Jazz and blues have always been a huge influence. So refreshing to see a legitimate composer appreciate what i did. I never understood theory as much as i should. But music like this influenced my entire (though very limited) career so much. Music is about feeling. And yoko did that so well. Good to see someone who understands the ins and outs more than me appreciate it as much as i did.

Yoko Kanno is a GENIUS. She is easily amongst my top 5 musicians ever and I am thinking of very big names here (precisely Peter Gabriel is one of them). This song was featured at the end of what Cowboy Bebop´s producers thought it was gonna be the final episode of the series. Eventually they produced more episodes but this finale is just DAMN BEAUTIFUL.

Thanks for doing this one Geebz! I know you'd like it. You were spot on with saying there's a hell of lot to listen to from this show. I can't emphasize how massive an impact this show made on so many facets of pop culture and storytelling, all while only having one single season. Definitely need to check out more! Also, my SECOND favorite OST from a Japanese production is Silent Hill (most songs from SH 1, 2, 3, or 4 are worthwhile). There is a TON of super cool, weird, dark, trip-hop-esque stuff in there to sink your teeth into. Cheers!

Just found this channel, but love to see someone discovering Yoko Kanno. A lot of my favorite music of all time comes from her. Macross Frontier soundtrack is probably my favorite, but she's done so many iconic Anime soundtracks, it's incredible.

"Very journey oriented" Yeah, you could say that.... Every episode of Bebop is episodic, and every episode begins with Tank! and ends with "The Real Folk Blues" - except for the final 2parter, and the mid series 2parter, Jupiter Jazz, about a lost saxaphone player, a veteran or a war on Titan, who's a character foil for both the male and female protagonists. This song plays to a slow pan from the final scene up into space, across the stars, and ends on Saturn.

Very nice work from you here. Yeah these guys (Seatbelts) are amazing. Every single song of theirs pits you on a good mood, either with fun and surprise or emotional depth. You still have a long journey with these guys. The next CBebop albums have more and more guest artists which creates very interesting variety of genres. Keep up the good work!

Absolutely adore the Blade Runner-esqe deep, deep, **deep** drums that sound like they're being played a thousand miles away. And everyone? Try to remember: You're gonna carry that weight.
