Too many random battles, and combat was slow. Wasn't a fan of the ship battles either. I stopped playing once I reached a part where you had to find some really specific thing with the airship and I just couldn't seem to locate it. Just kept getting into fights while searching so I gave it up. I did love the setting and characters. The title and cover art alone made me pick it up over Grandia II alone. Although I do regret not playing Grandia II until years later.

Joe Stevens it's one of my absolute favorite RPG's it is on equal footing to me as the first RPG game I ever played Grandia 2 for the dreamcast

I miss the days when the Playstation had loads of JRPGs to offer. Nowadays I don't see many JRPGs for PS3 or PS4. I prefer watching lists like these to the ones by IGN or watchmojo. There its all about fanwars, while here it's a "well, let's see what other people like and WHY" ^___^

Jose Cadiz I remember that I almost didn't buy a PS3 at all, because of the lack of JRPGs for the PS3 in Europe. But then my sister won a FF13-drawing contest organised by Square Enix, and received some rare & amazing prices (including the game), which made us buy the PS3 in the end. Still, I have far more JRPGs for my PS2 at home than the amount of JRPGs an average Gamestop has to offer for the PS3. I heard that it's because the gaming/console industry in Japan is shrinking.

AugustBurnsSam Really, 'good'? I've read many reviews that literally smashed the Atelier games. After watching a few walkthroughs, I too think that the characters don't seem very memorable/innovative, and the gameplay isn't anything new (for RPG fans). Even as a huge anime fan I can't get into the Atelier games, idk why. (Maybe I'm missing out some amazing games, maybe not?)

I really just spent the time building my character up using the Monk and Ninja job classes (after unlocking previous jobs), putting effort into unlocking Double Attack while also bringing over the high strength while using fists. I can't tell you exactly just because it's been a while, but I remember doing it in that fashion.

ah, and with the tales of games, I would suggest you give Xillia/ Xillia 2 on the PS3, Vesperia on the 360 , or Abyss on the 3DS a try they are some of the better games in the series , both Legeinda and Graces F are good games they are far from the best in the series . and before I get jumped by other tales of fans in the comment section I did not put TOS because everyone and their mother would have already recommended it. also with those games that is of course if you have the time to give them a try

Loved that game. I reached a point if no return on the last boss though. Started a new file where I was determined to power level every chance I got and grind for the best gear. Sadly, never went back to finish it. Still one of the best stories in my opinion. Just enough characters and plot elements to keep you fully engaged and not be confusing. Had a friend in high school who played it almost non-stop over a weekend and somehow beat it. Hats off to him

I played and loved Shining Force 2, and Diablo 2 was close to making the list as well. Honestly, making this a Top 20 wouldn't have the same impact, in my opinion. For software, nothing special - just either used an HD PVR with Hauppauge Capture or grabbed footage from the internet.

Xenogears is also my favorite RPG of all time. Played it for the first time in the late 90s as a high school sophomore and I think the reason why it clicked so much with me is that it explored concepts and storylines that are unique from all the other RPGs back then. It completely went all out in terms of storytelling; in fact, I felt like reading a really complex novel upon playing it. Such an underrated masterpiece. I want to play it again. :)

The Laughing Man There is no way any Suikoden game should be ranked under a Final fantasy game, with much deeper stories, better battle systems, and 100's of character Suikoden is many times better than any of the FF series. Well maby FF tactics can holds its own with Suikoden but that's about it.

I loved Grandia to death, and it was a close contender for the Top 10. I unfortunately lost my save at the last boss and have yet to go back. Enjoyed Grandia II and III, though. I have yet to play Suikoden at all, and Skies of Arcadia as well. Need to get to those soon, though!

RPG Site I like grandia series too. Based on your list I think you would like those titles too. Skies of Arcadia is old but unique. It is not really necessary to play Suikoden 1 to play 2. But 2 has just improved on everything about 1. Even great soundtrack and superb storyline. I don't think you'll regret it. When you play them, let me know your opinion

TheRezro You do realize that the cliche of a "Silent Protagonist" came from RPGs, right? Most early games didn't let your main character talk, letting you pretend to fill the role of the hero. Chrono Trigger is an example.

It could only work for people who are piece of wood, because how I can fill like character when is no such? It's not RPG. TheRezro Well considering the fact that in its defention "Role playing" would suggest the you were playing a role something i could not see happening if your player is talking for you and thus play the role himself. Though no game does that specific part of the genre much better then the others. In truth i wont be fully satisfied with RPG dialouge till i start seeing some voice recognition in games so that you can actually talk to npcs and the NPCs could actually say your name (personal thing i find annoying about RPGs)

lexiis Jomar Weakness of cRPG is that what you say. You can't directly speak as you character, just choice from several line of dialog.. still playing mute wood is not role playing. In Gothic for example you have full-fledged speaking character, and still making a choice for him make you care of his future.

I wish I could play ps 1 games on my ps 2 it starts them up and makes a weird noise when it plays them especially chrono trigger then it plays the games music but the screen lags and the controller won't work and it freaks out

I think that I couldn't make such a list because it's hard to say which one is really the best in my eyes, I love to much of them. I've played all of these except for one. I don't agree that Xeno Gears must be rated at 9 almost perfect 10. I think it's a fascinating concept. I just feel that for the most part, at least to me, Elder Scrolls doesn't have a good combat system and has a rather weak narrative overall. I'm not one for open world games, but The Witcher 3 may change that.

+Sebastian Zavala Xenoblade is definitely worth looking for. You should find the re-release on the N3DS easier to find. boy is that game amazing

+Sebastian Zavala yes. play it if you can. The other Xeno titles are unrelated but still solid. Xenosaga--all three episodes are amazing but you watch more than you play, although it's quite epic. The Xenoblade games, I'd wait because they, while both immersive, are definitely involving and will eat whatever time you have. Really, I have *yet* to play a bad "xeno" game.

Great list. Certainly gave me some good suggestion to try out in the future. I'm particularly interested in Terranigma, it sounds really cool! I think when it comes to RPGs eveyone's list is going to be different because personal experience plays a huge role in how you get along with one. My personal favourites that I can think of now (keep in mind my opinion tends to jump around and I have a LOT of unfinished RPGs) are (Bonus) Harvest Moon: Animal Parade - Not exactly your tradiotonal sort of of RPG but still an RPG os sorts nevertheless, thus why its not numbered. Instead of an epic quest you simply have to develope a run down farm, revitalise the local area, befriend townspeople and start your own family. The HM series offers some of the most, peaceful and relaxing yet emersive gameplay I know and i always wind up spending way to many hours playing these games. Not for everyone but great when you need a break from action and adventure and just want to slow down for a while. It was kind of difficult to pick one stand out but I think this probably offers the best long term experience and replay value. 10. Phantasy Star Online ep I and II +Phantasy Star Portable- Can be a little repetetive at times but have great character customization and a wide variety of weapons to choose from to keep gameplay interesting. I'd say I and II have better exploration as you have to go out and explore areas independantly of missions to progress the game but portable has a more fleible class system. Also raising the little mag companion was fun. 9. Shadow Hearts-The first thing that stood out to me in the Shadow Hearts games is that they're set in the real world using real locations giving it a unique, slightly more gritty feel comapred to other jrpgs. The use of the judgement ring meant you always had to pay attention in even random encounters making turn based fighting a little more interesting. The ability to have a character transfrom into different monsters is alays cool too. 8. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King - Pretty much your standard RPG but canbe brutally difficult if you don't level up or stray to far from the main paths early on. Even random encounters can wind up taking you out if you're not careful. However, once you're tough enough you will have massive, emmersive world to explore meaning you won't always want to just run straight to the next plot point. There's a decent amount of customization as you choose to level up cetain aspects of each character to give them different abilities or make them more skilled with certain weapons as well as a great alchemy system to waste tons of time with. 7. Suikoden V- This game is huuuuge. I musthave put a fair amont of time into it so far and I still feel I've barely made a dent in it yet. With 108 characters to recruit and 3 different styles of gameplay this game can really keep my interest but can feel overwhelming at times. The story seems pretty deep so far with a big focus on the use of politics as as opposed to the cliche "village boy becomes hero and save world from evil demon" type plot. Really need to get back into this game. 6. Chrono Trigger- Honeslyy what can i say that hasn;t already been said? I decided to start playing this game on DS when i didn't have internet for a coupleof weeks and got completely immersed in it. Still have to finish off the sidequests and it's still only my first playthrough so tons left to do here too. 5. Star Ocean: Till the end of time: I always like it when RPGs break away from turn based battles and random ecnounters and this game is no exception. Battles stay fresh and challenging as each character plays differently (loved playing as Albel). The game offers plenty of optional quests and different dialogue with each character as well as a number of different endings depending of which chracter you were closest too. Worlds vary from futuristic to your typical fantasy setting giving more variety to the environments and characters you encounter and just makes the game feel that much bigger. 4. Persona 4- A great combination of visual novel style gameplay for improving relationships between characters and dungeon crawling makes for a long, challenging game with lots of replayability. The characters and story are interesting and engaging. The amount of choice you havein terms of what you do each day and how you respond in conversations means you won't be playing the exact same game even after several playthroughs. 3. Kingdom hearts: Birth by Sleep - Another series, where it's difficult to choose a favourite but ultimately I think I enjoyed thecharacters and gameplay here the most. The Kingdom Hearts world is massive deep and ridiculously complicated but that's part of why I love it so much. There's just so many different characters, settings and plot elements that it really feels like a living, breathing world that needs saving. I always feel stupid now that I was put off by the Disney element for so long. 2 (Tied). Pokemon (Soul Silver, White 2, X) Pokemon was the the first game i ever really got into and I became completely obessed with it. I still love the game to this day and put waaay to many hours into them. They;re like a second home to me.I just become so attached to my team and love raising different pokemon to see how they play. Even after you complete the main story theres always tons left to do and I always find a reason to come back to them. I picked these three as I found they were the biggest and most varied games in temrs of what there s to do and what pokemon you can find in game. and Golden Sun: The Lost Age- This was the first game i played outside of Pokemon and Harvest Moon that I just could not put down for a long time. The story and characters are pretty basic but the gameplay is incredible with some of the best puzzle solving I've seen in an RPG through the use of various techniques each character learns such as reading npc minds, revealing hidden paths/objects, creating pillars to jump across gaps and clearing covered paths with whirlwinds. 1. Tales of Symphonia- An absolutley beautiful game and one that is beyond special to me personally. Starting out as your typical advenutre the game manages to deconstruct a lot of the rpg cliches that were so common at the time. This creates a deep, powerful story that isn't just about good vs evil: it shows that sometimes those you considered evil did not start out that way there are often reasons people do bad things and they may have started out with good intentions. Maybe they still believe that what they are doing is right. It truy delves into issues such as racism and discrimination and teaches the player to not only value the the lives of others but to value their own life and be happy to exist. The characters all have incredible hidden depths only discovered through ncovering all their optional dialogue and made me feel close to them, like I was part of the group on the journey with them. It's just a magical experience that helped me a lot when I was younger and one that i can always come back to and enjoy not matter how times I play it. (Sorry for the long, long post, if tl:dr just read the game titles ^_^')

You seem like you would like the suikoden series ~ Especially Suikoden 2. It's on PSN so, if you can play it, I would. It's an older game, but it has by far one of the best storylines as well as 108 different characters that you can add to your team and build your headquarters with, each with their own story and characteristics. It's amazing!
