Thanks 😀 👍. The results were closer together than I thought they might be

Would you like circuit diagram and its description of shown in your video from Tuntable RPM measurements. Thanks.
@mrrgstuff Жыл бұрын
I don't have a circuit diagram, unfortunately. At the time, it was a useful project, but commercial ones are available quite cheaply, and they are more accurate, too. Thanks 😀 👍

I did make this video, though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rma9i3yXebdkl7s

wouldn't the weight of the phone effect the speed of the turntable?
@mrrgstuff Жыл бұрын
As shown in this video, it doesn't seem to. I expect it would make a difference with the very light cheap modern turntables, like the Crosely suitcase style ones. However the motors in better quality equipment are quite capable of driving the phone around. Thanks 😀 👍

I just wonder, how about counting the rotations for a minute or two?
@mrrgstuff5 ай бұрын
@hugonotti9192 Yes, that works fine, too. I have sometimes counted the rotations of a record label on someone else's video to see if it is playing too fast or slow! 😅. Thanks 👍 😀

I've had the same comments when I've posted results with this app. Probably the same guy insisting the phone app isn't calibrated and won't accept that the time reference of the phone is such that it doesn't need calibration. I particularly like that it gives you w&f readings as i feel this is an important performance parameter.

Yes, indeed. I think different people have different preferences also. Some are very keen on stroboscopic discs, which, of course, are fine but trickier to film from a KZbin point of view than a spinning phone. Thanks 👍 😀

@@mrrgstuff A stroboscope disc only tells you if the speed is near and doesn't show W&F which is arguably more important than speed in my view. Maybe a camera which can fix the shutter speed might show a strobe disc ok but still theres no numeric data for comparison.

As it happens, my cameras shoot 50FPS, and my mains frequency is 50Hz, so filming a stroboscopic disk does work. It is not very convenient to use in vidoes though and a direct reading display works much better for me. Thanks 😀 👍

i tried one app and showed: 78rpm. but actual speed was 33rpm
@mrrgstuff Жыл бұрын
I've not seen anything like that. For me, usually the app is very close to the other measures I have used. Thanks 😀 👍

It's the gyroscope of your cell, not the app that works with fails

To measure anything physical an instrument has to be calibrated first. I don't think an iPhone can be calibrated. My 50 year old turntable measured 33.79 with .07 WF

It's an interesting point. I think it's worth considering, though, that this sort of measurement is essentially one of time. A phone is able to measure time to a high degree of accuracy as it is quartz crystal controlled. Quartz timepieces do not require recalibration once leaving the factory, and that would include phones as well as more traditional watches and clocks. Thanks for your comment.

Improve your listening skills if they need it, then put a piece of piano music on with long sustained notes and listen for any wavering, wowing in the playback. That separates the men from the boys. And of course noise floor.
