I don’t know wheather to laugh or cry when you hear that the RUC were an ‘impartial and nonsectarian’police force, and that the army used ‘minimum force’. If I’m not mistaken this was one of the most turbulent periods of the conflict when people’s houses were being smashed to pieces by the Army, innocent civilians being rifled down in the streets, internees being tortured and beaten. The RUC seem to be complaining towards the end of the clip about how hard their job had become in the province, maybe if they hadn’t have gone in as heavy handed 3 years earlier wielding their batons and smashing the skulls of civil rights marchers things could have been different. They brought their troubles upon themselves

Ordinary young lad didn't believe this could happen until he experienced it. RUC and army were cruel and frustrated cause they knew they shouldn't have been there. Older men now they must have dread over how they carried out their duty.

So this was in 1971 i was amazed to hear on this that the RUC was unarmed i wonder how long that lasted i'd say within months they where rearmed after the short disarmament.

Interesting that the reporter went so far as to call the internees "political prisoners" even though the British government never admitted that. Usually UK media outlets at the time were much less critical of state forces and their actions.

I would hate to know is just how many of these people who are interned under false pretenses completely innocent of any crimes that could in a stretch justify some of the milder treatment they were subjected to but what could justify the atrocities the maltreatment the trauma brought upon countless innocents. It's just a crying shame how much ruthless and cruel suffering was brought upon an innocent people wanting nothing more than what belong to them by right. Men women children suffered and died at the hands of a cruel and heartless regime of the power and the might of the imperialist machine My heart bleeds for the people who suffered the troubles and I weep for the scars and the trauma that this illegal and unjust I cry for all the poor children 😭

Prisoners should not have been mistreated, but people involved in illegal activity on both sides needed to be locked up, I would suggest a prison farm or working in a prison factory or community work programs would be suitable, not isolated torture.

Graham Watts the point about internment was that people were held without trial. So they weren’t guilty of being involved in anything. Or don’t you believe in due process and the rule of law.

At 03:02 you see Patrick Shivers father of Brian Shivers. Brian Shivers and Colin Duffy allegedly did the Masserene attack in which two British soldiers were shot dead and two others seriously injured and two pizza delivery drivers where also wounded. It happened on the 7th of March 2009. Colin Duffy was released as a remand prisoner but Brian Shivers was given life imprisonment but was released after a year because the courts found that the forensic evidence wasn't strong enough and it was unsafe to hold him in prison he has the life threatening condition Cystic fibrosis and is now 54 years old.
