(28 Jan 1977) RR7704B UK ULSTER PATROLLING CROSSMAGLEN
The British government maintains 14,000 troops in
Northern Ireland to keep the peace between Protestants
and Catholics, loyalists to the United Kingdom and those
who want to sever Ulster's constitutional links with
mainland Britain. The job of the soldiers is a
dangerous one - already this year three have died
and in 1972 some 130 were killed by terrorists'
bombs, booby-traps and gunmen. This item looks at
the work of the Royal Highland Fusiliers detachment
at Crossmaglen, the front line.

I was there in 1987 (B Coy, 1 Royal Hampshire). The towers were up by then. My 4th tour. I remember hard-targeting from the RUC station. As I recall the South Armagh tour was alternating rifle coys between rural patrolling from BBK via Lynx (were we mortared there as my brick were taking off in a Lynx). I saw lads hit and fall but soon we were gone down to the border to dropped off. Then there was time in the Golf towers. Finally patrolling XMG. Despite losses and seeing friends lose body parts, I enjoyed it. If you’re a pro footballer you want to get on the pitch. My hardest tour was Fermanagh in 1982 as the Falklands was kicking off. 1 Para took over from us but teased us saying ‘stag on’ because they were sure they’d go down south. I finished my year with Recce pln (formerly COP) on South Georgia. I hope you’re well mate. Infantry ⚔️

Crossmaglen is a relatively quiet village since the British left in 2007. It wasn't even supposed to be in Northern Ireland, it was not included in the first 2 original partition maps drawn up I don't think. A slip of a British pen on a map caused all this. How Crossmaglen ended up in Northern Ireland I'll never know.

What gets me is your man saying how can you just murder men like this talking about the soldiers But they have been doing it to the Irish for decades. I don’t think any man woman or child should be murdered but it’s no big deal to them when a catholic gets brutally murdered but when it’s one of there own all of a sudden it’s barbaric. It ain’t no fun when the rabbits got the gun. I lost good friends in school from this war young innocent children. They did they just made more enemies. It was completely unnecessary conflict. The only thing they had to do was keep the peace. The nationalists treated them well and welcomed them. It’s when they started helping loyalist mobs burn down nationalist homes, the welcome mat was taken away. Besides if Bloody Sunday was a recruitment tool for the provos can you imagine wide spread killing of Irish civies on a huge scale would have had the Irish people on mass enlisting either in the provos or the Irish army, all intelligence from the republic would have been stopped and it’s very likely the public outcry would have resulted into an even more brutal ground war and made things thousands of times worse than they were.

Then it may or may not be your property after that depending on how things go. If Brexit goes sour people will be itching to leave. At any rate, there will be changes.

The original idea behind the deployment of the British Army was indeed to protect the locals and initially this was appreciated by both sides, Catholic’s included. Everything went south after 1972 and the Army was then seen as the enemy just like the RUC. As far as the Army was concerned, the official mission statement never changed especially in official communication. The reality of course was a bit different.

If you want to know what happened when the IRA actually fought their opponents head on, look no further than the story of Corporal Eric Glass - one part time middle aged UDR soldier armed only with a pistol beat back four Provos with automatic assault rifles, killing one, whilst heavily injured from their gunfire.
@whitedwarf13
@whitedwarf13 6 жыл бұрын
it was never the objective of the British to defeat the IRA though, they only meant to suppress their violence to an acceptable level and allow a political solution to emerge. Mission accomplished. The IRA spoke of having forced a stalemate in their propaganda but they had taken their armed campaign as far as they could and they knew it.

By the mid-1990s the Provisional IRA was having every good operation in Belfast compromised by informers and the UVF's war of attrition against them in rural Ulster was grinding them down further. Ya see if I'm not mistaken, this same regiment probably these same borstal boys helping to hold down the victims , were involved in what became known, the pitchfork murders of two guys , Michael Naan and Andrew Murray. Sgt Stan Hathaway, Cpl Forrester Sgt Chestnut, Cpt Snowball,etc ,etc it went right up the ranks. Person's unknown were of course said to have been responsible, with heavy inference on loyalists. Only when one of the regiment listened to the Wearside Jack , bogus Yorkshire ripper tape , he was convinced it sounded like Hathaway, undeniably a Psychopath ,who he'd been on tour with , he went to the cops in Glasgow , probably looking a reward and was physically thrown out of two separate stations. Only for a Savvy journalist at a Glasgow newspaper it would , like so many hundreds of others, have ended at that. It seems at the beginning of the tour the entire platoon were shown Naans photo and details and that he was to be treated, appropriately, having earlier been involved in the civil rights movement. It went higher than Snowball of course but he was offered a non custodial, with pension in tact no doubt. If you look closely at these individuals you can tell the half of them are unhinged.

Most right minded people on the island of Ireland would much prefer to talk of peace and reconciliation instead of reading sectarian bullshit. I’d like to think that we can all agree with the fact that there were wrongs and atrocities inflicted and carried out by both sides of the divide. How can our children and future generations truly live in peace if we continue to live in the past? History (the good and the bad) should never be rewritten/altered or forgotten and it should be taught in our school’s curriculum without bias or sectarianism.

@@contactacb I live in a country that year on year bottomed in the free speech index, where journalists are severely prosecuted. The government media (just the régime's mouthpiece) do not even produce such reports.

the surrender in Iraq was probably the most profound. when the British army arranged a meeting with the fighters in Mosul and said we will no longer patrol and will pull all our troops out if you agree to no longer attack us. that should have been the wake up call. British soldiers still say they were in Afghanistan. you weren't. you were in one small part called helmand. a joke to the local Taliban and constantly saved by american forces before once again surrendering. enjoy videos like this. this was your heyday. you know it and i know it

You’re wrong it was basra not Mosul get your facts right, we defeated saddam. No you’re wrong the Americans never saved us in Basra it was the Iraqis who took over. We never surrendered in Afghanistan again wrong shut up you keyboard warrior coward . There have been mistakes in Iraq war thats nothing to do with British soldiers, it’s spineless politicians not giving enough resources or having the will for a fight. Learn the facts and truth before you shout your mouth off behind a keyboard spouting antibritish shit

Ulster staying British was th best thing for Ireland. The British had turned it into a bankrupt welfare state. Ireland wouldn't of been able to support the population on its own.

Whisper it, but the Irish economy is booming again, with unemployment expected to dip below 5.5pc this year and GDP forecast to grow by around 4pc. With the recovery come challenges. Housing remains a considerable problem the Government must tackle, while many experts have also warned of the risk of overheating. Brexit also looms large. Five prominent economists give their take on 2018. www.independent.ie/business/irish/the-economy-in-2018-the-expert-view-36456511.html You can read here what 5 leading economists have to say. Or let me save you the bother by telling you the bottom line. You are full of shit. The Irish economy presently is outperforming the UK economy but that wouldn't be hard. Just wait for the consequences of the likely no deal Brexit to kick in and you learn what it is to live in a failed economy. Maybe you can do what you did in 1973 and go to the IMF for a bailout.

IMF says UK has a debt that is 87.02% of GDP while Ireland's is only 68.52% en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_public_debt So the UK isn't exactly the land of milk and honey is it ?????????????

That's the British tactic blame pub bombing on the provisionals even tho they were never ordered to blow up pubs. There bombing campaign was hitting mainland Britain and Europe why tf would they target pubs. Its all propaganda
