That’s why I haven’t told many people and didn’t go to court or report it, it could have been easily argued I “led him on” or “was asking for it” cuz I was okay at first and then said no but he wouldn’t stop. The assault was traumatic but what’s way more traumatic is having people blame you, judge you, shame you etc it’s literally the worst thing ever I already felt ashamed but everyone makes it worse for victims.

That, and often times suggestion is more effective than outright depiction. Like the classic monster lurking in the dark, or the chainsaw scene in Scarface. If it isn't made to be one particular thing, it can become the worst possible thing to the most possible viewers.

I really love it too. we aren't painted a vivid image of the assault itself; we never know who this man is, what he looks like, how the encounter exactly went down, none of that. we're only given bertie describing the set up, and in s3 one of her high school friends said "she technically got to third base", and that's it. what really matters is the emotional impact that the experience left on her, and that's what the show delves into. and it does so beautifully. the show doesn't provide any jerk off material centered around her jelly lakes trauma, and I think that's something EXTREMELY special, imo just another byproduct of this show feeling like it was written by women.

I love the way this show handled it.

So I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but, Bertie's reaction to Pastry Pete's sexual harassment, is a trauma response. It's called hypersexualization, people that have been victims of SA in some form or another, can develop this form of trauma response.

I really hate they had to take the "people think she overreacted" response into account. Trauma comes in many different shapes and sizes! If it's an experience that is so uncomfortable, scary or stressing that it freaks you out just to think about it, your mind causes you to re-live how you felt in that moment, and/or it changes how you brain thinks to avoid having any similar experiences, it's trauma. Brains differ based on experiences people went through, and what they're used to! What might be "overreacting over something small" to one person, might be a scary, overwhelming experience to another. Never belittle others trauma, it's insulting to how much pain they go through, and how hard it might be to get around it.

I know that sometimes I want to cry out of annoyance and frustration and even the startledness of for example, after a long day and then ramming my head not just once but twice and two the sharp edge of the dryer door as I'm about to put the laundry into the dryer, I just want to cry. If I'm on the phone with certain people, I'm afraid to just break out and cry, because it feels like it's not acceptable if you are over the age of 18 and want to cry from some physical pain.

Oh wow .. Otaku you are so right! It's never right to Shame someone's pain, ANY kind of pain. I work with children and started doing the same thing as them when I het Hurt. I start Hawking unapoligatical. It's embarrasing sometimes but it is SUCH A RELIEF. Seriously. I stub my toe, I bang my head? I start crying. Loudly. I tell people around me it'll be over soon if they just let me have this reaction for a bit. It really helps. Someone says something mean? I cry. I tell Them it makes me feel sad. They tell me not to overreact and I tell them this is the most effective way to manage my pain. Some creepo lays his hands on me? I punch him in the nose and cry and shriek like a banshee. Crying is the absolute best form of pain relieve. Children know this!

Pete confused me throughout the season. One minute I thought he was cute another he would freak me out. It wasn't until the moment with the yellow bird(Dakota I think?) and Pete where he forced her face in the roux I realized how bad he was.

If you rewatch the show you can tell it's intentional. We view Pete through Bertie's eyes and we only see how bad it actually is when Pete does the same thing to Dakota. Our opinions on Pete change because unlike Dirk, we don't know how Bertie feels about him. With Dirk, we can tell Bertie dislikes and is uncomfortable around him. He's a dick, and it's clear. But because Bertie idolises Pete, we are unsure about how to feel about him until we see it from an outside perspective because Bertie herself isn't sure how she feels about him and his advances until she sees how he treats Dakota

Real abusers are like that. No one acts like a literal monster all the time. They act normal and even charming, but they keep doing little things to control, harass, subjugate, and bully someone they have financial, legal, or social power over, in small ways. So small, people feel too afraid to even say anything about all the cruel little things they sometimes do or say. Because they’re just people. But their idea of how it’s okay to treat people, if they can get away with it, is abusive. Then, if they want, and have the victim in a vulnerable position, like working under them or being their girlfriend, they just get worse and worse.

I’ll never forget a review of Tuca and Bertie that defended Dirk and Pete, saying that “maybe they had some sort of experience that lead them to think that behaving like that, maybe someone harassed Dirk sexually so it made him think it was okay, and perhaps Pete had an ex-wife who stole ideas from him so he has a weird need to control women at his work.” It made me really angry because there are no excuses for abuse, and it was defending sexist behavior, but after watching this I think the show could find a way of showing how Dirk and Pete got to where they are without justifying it. Just saying “this is why they think like that”, without saying it’s good or bad.

I mean there are reasons for everything, but its not a justification, its annoying when ppl say these pretty regular reasons and act like the person couldnt think about what they were doing. I was abused as a child, and because of that i had my own aggresive outbursts and tended to take it out on ppl like my sister. Was that a reason for me to be a negative effect on others? yes, but was i justified to do so? No. No matter what sort of things you experienced it doesnt justify you to be a prick to others. No matter what happened you need to work on yourself.

I think its really important for women and men alike to be aware of how trauma affects their bodies and how they respond. Im glad this show brought this topic up because it's hardly ever talked about. It's sad but people cope these ways. It's a way of healing, guilt, and repainting bad memories with good ones. It's hard to talk about but super important for women especially to know its ok to explore your trama in a safe manner.

I was really happy to see how they made Pete. Most abusers dont act like someone you'd expect to abuse you and treat your wrongly. They seem alright but there are those moments where they do, say, or act in a not ok way. Its complicated until it happens. It's never your fault for when any of the terrible things they do happen. All I can say is avoid those people as soon as you see red flags. Avoid them especially if they have a group that condemns that behavior. It's normal to want to bang out or go to a birthday party but because these disgusting people exist in the world we need to be more careful and at least go places with friends who wont leave you.

I had a sexual abuser who groomed and manipulated me. I didn't realize what was happening until a night in his car, where he was taking me to the theater and asked to feel my tits. I said yes because I was too scared to resist. I chose not to go back home with him-I called the campus police, gave them his information, and started an investigation on him. He was not charged because I said yes, but I at least put the fear of God into that miserable worm in glasses, if only for a short time.

Yesterday i watched a terrible review of the same topic shown in the series, whereas the guy who made the video spent all of it trying to justify Pete's and Dirk's actions. I watched the show not long after my own experiences with sexual abuse, and Bertie’s initial reaction to pete’s abuse of her, despite it being an unhealthy reaction, made me feel seen in my own experience of hypersexuality in response to sexual abuse. The show helped me in some ways to understand my own trauma responses and how unhealthy they could be when I initially watched it as a 14-15 year old, and I think it contributed a bit to me leaving that cycle.

I kinda felt so happy about this show, bc if i tell someone about what happened to me, no one takes it seriously and thinks im overreacting. Even the police! The Story: When i was 13, a 24 year old man just started talking to me. I didnt wanted to say that i felt uncomfortabel so i just played along. He was talking to me at the bus station, so i couldnt go anywhere else. He always wanted that i go into his house "Just 10 minutes". He didnt wanted that i speak to my mother about this and said things like "i got my Driving permission, HUG ME". He always huged me, even if i didnt wanted it. One time he just took my hand...he didnt wanted to let it go. At this day i didnt went to school, i was going to the police. And then the officer said something like "What you said to him, could be interpreated as flirting, so its your fault too" or " His behaving is maybe a little wierd" MABYE? A LITTLE?!

I really like the way they showed the complex feelings that such abuse can bring up. They show the grittier side, the traumatic side, they show when it haunts you, but I think most importantly is how complex the feelings quickly became around the Pastry Pete incident. It's a side of abuse that I don't often see shown (or if it is it winds up taking a full 180 into being romanticized). How it's still sexual abuse even if her reactions to it were mixed or even "positive" at times. Feels like something that's important to be portrayed, especially when such feelings can so easily make someone second guess if what they went through was "true" sexual abuse or "traumatic enough."

This has me struggling. The people who abused me have gotten away with it almost all my life. The only people who believed me and held them responsible were my husband (from the beginnin and in-laws...(AFTER I tried ending it all). It makes me so angry that people judge and gloss over abuse as just things you have to 'put up with'. I hate that my abusers were constantly validated and I was not. That I've been called a liar and attention seeker for it before. I've had nightmares since I was little of running to people and screaming for help, and they didn't even see or hear me. I was invisible. I still AM invisible. Part of me wants the people who ignored and abused me to suffer. I want them to feel deep, insufferable, unrelenting shame and powerlessness...just like they made me feel. Over and over again. All these TV shows show people standing up to abusers being the right thing to do. How? How, when it meant constant invalidation and horrible accusations thrown at me? Then people have the nerve to say stupid bs like 'I didn't know it was that bad.' Or 'I thought she was faking.' No, you just chose to believe what YOU wanted to. You didn't pay attention. You didn't listen. You don't get to act surprised. I'm so sick of enablers acting shocked when the truth hits them like a Mack truck. Poor you. I HAD TO LIVE WITH THIS FOR DECADES. I know how that feels. I often feel cursed to be ignored and invalidated by people around me, even though I keep telling them again and again about what horrible things my abusers did to me. And I also still feel a lot of hatred to people who abused me in the past, even though I haven't contacted some of them for years. I also want them to suffer as much and as long as I did because of them. Well, sometimes we're just unlucky with what people we have around us. But even so, I find people who understand me and help me get through my trauma. So, I'm happy that you found people who understand you too.

I related to so many episodes, and I'm now fully invested in the series. Everything you talked about here is right on point. When I was a kid back in middle school a peer of mine in gym class would feel up my thighs and make inappropriate comments...this lasted about a year. I was always confused in the moment, but afterwards I would process those situations a lot like bertie did... I assumed that this meant I had a crush on him, which couldn't have been further from the truth. It wasn't until years later when I told a friend about it that she told me it was sexual abuse, which confused me even more because as much as I hated the guy and was afraid of him I couldn't help but process those problems the same way bertie did, and I felt especially stupid thinking about those things in such a romanticized way years after they had passed and he moved to a different highschool. Seeing this years later I wonder if I could have stopped him before things got worse knowing what I know now, instead of misinterpreting his abuse as affection. I wish I understood why I coped the way I did but it feels a lot better now to understand what the situation really was and know I'm not alone in this experience.

abusers pick lonely people because they know they want attention, its natural to want and like attention and loneliness just makes you want it a little bit more. Anybody who says you're over-reacting or that you somehow did something wrong to cause it needs to be cut from your contacts plain and simple. Workplace really sucks when it’s a huge corporation that rather replace you then to help you. I was exposed in my first job at Disneyland to it. I hated that guy and he laughed in my face along with other young female workers that told him to stop and he said go ahead and go tell on me, I’ll still be working and getting paid more than any of you, and sadly he was right. They didn’t listen.. they paid him higher than any other cast member because of his weird relationship with the bigger managers. I felt so wronged and so silenced by them. I haven’t even heard of this show before now, but wow… Just wow. Like, genuinely one of the best and most heart-wrenching depictions of sexual trauma I’ve seen in basically any media ever. I REALLY like and appreciate the portrayal of the past trauma as being really vague and more symbolic than anything else, at least for me when recalling past stuff that’s often how it feels. And it also makes for a less triggering and also more nuanced depiction of trauma. PLUS PLUS PLUS I REALLY appreciate how they portrayed hypersexualization. It really isn’t talked about a lot, but as someone who has developed that due to sexual trauma, it is SUCH a real thing and it is something that contributes to so much more shame even though it’s not like you CHOSE to feel that way… And a lot of people don’t talk about it or even worse they view it as a way to invalidate your trauma, even though it’s just as damaging and difficult as sexual-repulsion from trauma. It’s hard to put my thoughts into words right now, but yeah I almost cried when I saw that because even now, I still blame myself constantly for things and shame and belittle myself into thinking I’m overreacting, and I honestly still genuinely believe I am, but whatever… Anyway, I think I might just have to watch this show now, thank you so much for making this video and (inadvertently) introducing this show to me! Sorry to anyone who doesn’t want to hear about my life (I don’t blame you lol), but I figured I share some of my own thoughts and feelings.

I will say as a sufferer of SA on some level that the power dynamic never leaves you. You find situation/situation of others powerful to you. You find outlets that are harmful to other and offensive to other painful but empowering to you. It's never easy and others don't understand but it makes sense to you. It makes sense to you that this doesn't make sense to others and that you can relate to others. It's hard to explain but easy to explain to other's who have experienced your pain and that it isn't easy for others to know what turns you on or why. Or how much damage it does to you or how hard it is to explain to others. It's hard to explain but easy at the same time. You can relate to others by shared experiences but can't share with others who wouldn't understand or understand the way you do.

I watched another series (crime series) that portrayed young abuse kinda as the same way as bertie's with the victim being abuse for some time at a oyung age incapable to know what was going on and as a result assimilating that "lifestle" and returning to the abuser ven knowing now that wat happened to them was bad. Don't know how many people knows this but sometimes when kids are sexually abused they might reenact that event later in life but try to be in control that round. That way they can get some of there power back. Birdie is a good example because in her flash back she was repeatedly saying I was special as this horrendous thing happens. Then with the baker her whole goal was to be special to him as well. After the advancement she did try harder to be more of his equal.

I know this is 4 years ago but I wanna say that Bertie not lashing out when being sexually harrassed hits very close to home. When I was sexually harrased and touched, I didn't reacted to it because I thought it was normal and I was just overreacting until several woman stands up against the sexual harrasser. This show accurately portrays that so well, which is why I love this show so much.

i was so pleasantly surprised with adult swim when they adopted the show, then surprised again at their second season there. you can kind of tell there's different producers involved. they're getting away with more. more cartoony bullshit, more gross out humor. i wanna say it's somehow more feminist now, but that could just be the artists throwing their weight around. but it's hard to tell a creator 'hey, you can't do this, it's too sexual' when you're the channel that makes squid billies and metalacalypse. and you can't tell the creator 'hey we want everything to reset at the end of each episode like its still the 80s' when venture brothers and rick and morty have such broad appeal. we're talking also about a channel that has dabbled in making its own anime, with anime-style on-going plots, too. so tuca and bertie fits in so well with the other shows being produced right now. idk if its just the algorithm, but when i got to the AS site to watch shows with my cable subscription, tuca and bertie is always the banner. i think AS is hoping this is their next big thing, and I think they could be right. audiances are tired tired tired of the edgy-for-no-reason narcissism of the 2000s. they ant that 'trauma happens, but we come out on the other side' story, now.

I do find it interesting that victims oftentimes will not get angry at the abuse given to them but will become enraged as soon as they see the same abuse inflicted on another. Scenes behavior in myself told me deep down that I was a good person and that my feelings about my treatment were valid and I needed to stand up for him just as I stood up for others. Most of abusers are unwilling to give up their victims but I was tired of being abused °~•.☆.•~°

I know this is a 1 year old comment so feel free to ignore but I feel like it should be common knowledge not to make comments on your coworkers body unless you have a close relationship outside of work. I feel that "unclear boundaries" is a poor excuse for what dirk did, and the fact you didn't think he was a dick for the s3xual harrassment is telling. Watching the episode, dirk makes those comments alluding to the idea bertie can't get the promotion without s3xualising herself. Not only is that degrading to suggest, but the s3xual nature of it is just harrassment, which he has a history of as shown in the episode. Someone having a history of s3xual harrassment is a perfectly fine reason for being laid off, or at least diciplined. I've not had a coworker make any weird comments about me, but I have had classmates make such comments as well as invade my personal space, and in that case it was malicious because their goals were to make me uncomfortable since it somehow got out I was r@ped when I was 6 and they wanted to essentially trigger me. And at my job I've had customers, literally old enough to be my dad, make comments on my body, try to hook up with me, and even try following me home. No matter the severity, all of these events have made me intensely uncomfortable, the last one making me terrified to walk alone at night after just getting over that fear due to my experiences with CSA. I would never make such comments no matter how attractive I found someone, because I know how degrading it is. And trust me, I am horny as fuck, for men and women alike. But I'd never say that to them. If I wanted to pursue them, I'd prefer to build at least a baseline relationship with them first, and if I wanna show them I'm interested I'm not gonna do it in a work environment and I'm not gonna be degrading about it. I don't know how it wouldn't be common knowledge not to make such comments.

B is not as unlikely considering a lot of people have lived sheltered lives free of consequences than you think, it was even shown that Dirk gets away with it because people find hima charismatic and attractive. I think his actions are bad, but at most really bad HR violation with a threat of firing with mandatory sensitivity training ( even if most of them just teach you to mask the problem, instead of fixing it ). Truth is these kinds of situations are a huge problem, and I have done these a lot myself, because I had a very sheltered upbringing. I don't want to hurt others, I just have terrible social skills

Therefore if there is a really bad person at work and someone speaks out against them, it's just a matter of who would cost the company less money to cut off (usually the outcrier as they're more likely to not be in a position of power). So the bad person gets away with that behavior. If you see this character portrayed a certain way in an episode that is about workplace and sexual harassment and think that's okay, I think it's a sign you need to rework on what you define as proper behavior towards peers.
