In this episode of the modest house build, we start window and door framing. The difference is in this video, I show you typical window and door framing installation as well as atypical. This is how you frame a window where a post is on a post frame!

Kyle if you want to pull nails an easier way is to put the nail as far into the slot in the hook end of your hammer and then push the handle sideways towards the wall and use leverage to roll the nail out of the board much easier than pulling down on the handle,try it you will like it !

Without chains there may be a slim chance in a really strong wind that you would loose your bare structure (no sheeting on walls yet). But those columns bolted into steel supports that are then tied into the foundation are most likely going to hold up in windy conditions. But chains are of course necessary until sheeting is installed for safety and peace of mind.

This house I'm living in now, built in the late 60's, is put together with nothing but ring-shanked nails. Right down to the smallest finish nails. Whatever room I remodeled, it was a pain to remove ANY framing or molding because of them but I appreciate that this house "isn't going anywhere"!

I was serious question regarding your header that you put in for the door and window. Your load is not carried from the header to the foundation. You put a header board on the outside so in a sense you’ve only got nails, carrying the load between those two post, not sure that makes sense to me can you clarify? I noticed you have the doors or the door post frame running from the header down so OK you’ve got the one side but you’ve got no jack studs on either side. I’m not a professional carpenter. I’m more of a plumbing guy, but I was just curious. I love the way you guys do stuff. I’m sure you’ve got a reason. It just doesn’t make sense in my mind. It’s not registering can youexplain that a little better thanks, Scotty.

Scotty, I am with you on how that load transfers. But this is the same header process used for large garage door openings too, so it's proven through real world use that it works for carrying roof load. I'm assuming something would be different if it were carrying a second floor load too, but I could be wrong.

Doesnt the header to carry the load of the cut beam have to be under the beam? Are the nails into the beam enough for support?
@c.a.martin3029
@c.a.martin3029 2 күн бұрын
Exactly what I saw, they don't have sufficient load carrying ability with just nails through a 2x10, even if they double it. There should be a header that spans under the cut post and sits on jack studs to do it right.
@runliftshoot
@runliftshoot 2 күн бұрын
Not with a post frame. When I built mine the engineered plans looked just like that. Even for my 12 ft wide garage doors. Those ring shank post frame nails have insane sheer strength.
@c.a.martin3029
@c.a.martin3029 2 күн бұрын
@ The issue here is not just relying on the shear strength of the nails to carry all the weight, but really an inadequate header that is only held by nails as well, with the lack of a solid path down to the foundation. I know in post frame construction "pole barns" often stretch the limits for cost reasons and usually (not all) agricultural buildings don't get inspected and are exempt from building codes, but this is a person's home and not just an implement shed or hay storage. There is no way this would pass an inspection where I live.
@runliftshoot
@runliftshoot 2 күн бұрын
@@c.a.martin3029 codes are different across the states so I couldn't tell you how they would recommend it in your area. Regardless of living space or not, it is still sufficient to carry the weight. Otherwise the 1000s of barns would have the doors fall off and the wall come down. But they've built barns like that forever and I see many farms in my area that have a 100 year old barn still standing. My county is a pain with the codes and mine was acceptable.

Big fan of extra framing to hold the door to the concrete but were I live that would be Lunch for the Termites. Here in Pa. I would try to have all treated for the first 4 feet and when the outside is done I would spray Bora-Care heavy on all exterior walls and footers to keep them out. Lexel keeps the air out at the joints. I would have centered 2 window and eliminated the extra work.

Like knowing how you overcome putting doors & windows in the middle of post. I feel like the customer is wasting the cost & time savings that post gives you. I understand the client gets what they want but I would have adjusted my plans. The only thing they did right was the garage is as big as the house.

I build post frame out In southern idaho . I'm running into a lot of issues with engineers . I try to mimic your building style as I think it's strong and efficient . BUT I can not get an Engineer to pass the header method you use for garage doors with the double stack LvL. I understand every geographic area is different . But the closest I can get is the call for a glulam with a ton of cs strapping because of lateral strain . Is this a problem you ran into until you found an engineer that works with you ? He is worried about the building moving and drywall cracking . My new engineer is willing to work with me . I was just curious if you hit those obstacles ? I just assume Illinois has a heavy snow load and more wind then southern Idaho we are rated for 115 mph wind and 50lbs dead snow load

I've been wondering why you used the bolt down post brackets on this build and on RRHQ 2.0, instead of the wet set brackets? Is it because the concrete stem wall isn't wide enough to support them? Or is it because there wouldn't be enough time to set them all when they pour the walls?

@joeyjohnson9765 the holding power of the nail demonstrates the clamping force between board and post. It's not just the nails holding, it is the friction of clamping the two bords together. Drill a hole and just place a bolt and you can move the parts, tighten the bolt even with an over size hole and you can't move it.
@joeyjohnson9765
@joeyjohnson9765 Күн бұрын
@@timothydillon6421 Still…I just feel it is less strongly supported compared to a header on stick framing with the load being transferred through the jack studs. It would be cool to see some sort of test with one of those online structural engineering type things
