Hi Kyle, You asked about “Field Science” and then you answered your own question perfectly. You’re dealing with the actual dimensions of your lumber and “Perfect Math” doesn’t account for the fact that (a) each board’s thickness is about 1/16” away from the promised 1 1/2” thickness, and (b) your clients can’t afford to pay you to plane every surface to perfection, because that level of exactitude isn’t necessary (or even helpful tbh, since wood swells and shrinks with the weather lol)

Thanks for explaining not only the math, but why it is important to learn. Twice in my life I worked with men who had 35 years experience and I had to show them how to do the job that required math. I was in my 20's and had to make a light shadow box in a conference room out of 1"x6"'s. The second was making hip rafter & jack rafters with 1"x6" metal studs for a porch just like this one here. I did not like math in grade school but made it my minor in college, because applied math is so much fun. Geometry & trigonometry is so useful in a lot of applications & trades.

I am so happy to have found your channel a year or so ago. Its great to see a builder do things the right way and not cut corners even when it is an area that no one may see or can be hidden. And the fact that you and Greg do so much of the work yourself is amazing. Keep up the good work, it is appreciated .

strive for perfection, if you fail, you'll end up great not good enough. the time it took to do the calculations and cuts is worth it for the results. Many will simply fudge it and walk away; the Porch won't fall down (hopefully) but when you get to the detailed finish work, you'll have extra steps as nothing will line up.

Tapcons would work fine as long as your not in freeze zone , as the frost would cause the two different cement slabs to shift at different levels , unless you poured a footing and went down four to six feet
@WorldWideWillem-360 Жыл бұрын
When (at 17:15) you were not 100% happy with your angle, could it have been that the rounded edges off a 6x6 (same with 4x4's) isn't a super good combination with a too thin /small carpenter square? While cutting on the miter saw all should be OK, but when you draw the 45 degree lines those rounded edges come into play. Not sure, just a thought.

A quick tip on cutting the top cut of your hip is when you're marking your pitch(37:32), mark both sides of the tongue of your square and cut your 45 on the long side and then reverse cut your 45 on the short side and you will have a perfect beveled top cut

Have you ever done a lap joint on the porch headers at the mid beam like old barn beams? I do not know which joint is stronger but it probably does not matter much using 6x6's . Great work. Been following you for a few years now and I show your videos in the 8th grade math class that I teach to show when they may use the Pythagorean Theorem. Waiting on an update of your new shop on KZbin. I do not have the IG to follow you.

The only tool that I have that's Black & Decker/ DeWALT is my miter saw stand. The stands that you have suck unless your on a board flat surface to set them on. I mounted my Hatachi miter saw on a 3/4 piece of plywood and then fitted the DeWALT brackets on the bottom of the plywood. It clicks right on easily every time. I'm on my 4th DeWALT miter saw stand because they are not built very well. They always ware out on the ends where the extension screws on. I wish someone would make something like this that's built better.

It’s blade deflection man. Miter saws (especially contractor grade saws, regardless of brand) just aren’t heavy enough, and don’t have good enough blades and tolerances to cut big materials like that. Is what it is. Only way to do better than what you did is to build in shop with commercial/industrial grade tooling.

OK I'll admit it. I have no idea as to what a "FARM CHAIN" is. I know what a chain is but what makes it a '"FARM CHAIN." Kyle, you've got to give us city folks a break now and then. Have you ever heard of or used a prazi beam cutter? Instead of working so hard on all the math for your corner ceiling joist why not , set corner, set 2 hip pieces, mark both ends and chalk line across hip. Beams straight, chalk lines right.
@charlievanlandingham567 Жыл бұрын
Just a note but that style framing would not work in Florida. I know things are different in other parts of the country. 2x4 will only span 6ft, plywood seams have to have clips in them. I've done some similar porches with 4x6 rough cut heart pine and 1&1/2x6 t&g juniper and cypress mix for roof deck.
