RSD 2024 Review: Art Tatum's Jewels in the Treasure Box by Resonance Records

I was fortunate to receive a copy of one of Resonance Records' releases for Record Store Day 2024, which is Art Tatum's Jewels in the Treasure Box, a 3LP set consisting of 39 tracks from a variety of dates at the Blue Note club in Chicago in 1953. Here are my thoughts.

Love your insight, knowledge, history. A lot of people love to deep dive into their passions and interests. One thing I would change slightly is to cut to the chase much earlier in your videos, grab the attention of your audience faster, and then support your opinion with all of the information you want to share. Rambling a lot in the beginning is harder to watch, but take that as you may, always enjoy your content!

Great Video - useful, interesting & thorough. Re-playability, as you mention , is becoming increasingly important as my collection grows also. This RSD has so many interesting titles it is going to make for some some difficult decision making.

Can you imagine going into a club with the great Art Tatum and there is only 50 people?? Hindsight is definitely 20/20 in this case. Sounds like a winning 3lp set. Ill probably just pick up the cd set as many times piano can come across more stable on digital formats. Plus 32 bucks vs 85 bucks. Have you ever considered doing rips of your lps that you decide to sell on ebay? Hi-Rez needledrops into a hard drive to have handy on a cheap server might let you have your “sold” jazz library pieces in vintage and well mastered sound that takes up no room. One day you may think “Hmm wish I could listen to that lp I sold”. Great Hi-Rez rips will get you 95% there in comparison to the lp. Plus it is fun to do. I have a blast doing them. Just a thought.

Three sides of Tatum intimately recorded with bass and guitar properly balanced is a treasure. If you haven't heard Tatum, you haven't heard the apogee of jazz piano, narrowly defined as the confluence of ultimate naturalistic technique with rhapsodic conception. HIs only real comp is Errol Garner.

Sounds like another RSD album that you may listen to once or twice and never again. Sounds like the Wes Montgomery RSD album where the first 3 sides sound good and the last 3 sides are virtually unlistenable.
