That one didn't come back for over a month and lucky for her my mom took care of the four year old boy she just dumped at our house. Same deal. I stole a keychain from autozone when I was like 9. My parents let me know I could get in huge trouble and drove me back. They told me I could either go in myself and apologize and ask what I had to do to make it right or, they’d take me in and I’d get grounded, cuz that’s how it works for adults. I went in and apologized and the old dude gave me a sad smile (which to this day haunts me more than anything else) and said I could just leave it on the counter, or I could buy it. It was 3.50. I paid him(my parents had made me bring my little wallet, probably knowing that might be the case) and apologized. He said not to worry, and asked me, ASKED me just please not to do it again. There was just something in his eyes, you could tell he was more worried about me than the 3.50 that BURNED an impression in my mind that I’ve never forgotten. Empathy is the best answer, I never forgot my lesson. It’s literally all it takes

I stole a bike chain when I was a kid cos I forgot mine at home and I went to return it the next day and the shop owner called the police on me. When my mum found out I copped a whopping and she made me do cleaning duties at the store, AND the police station, for 2 weeks, I also had to pay for the bike chain. I once accidentally stole from a shop and it took me almost 10 years to admit that. Basically I dragged my mom into this store at the mall while my brother and father went to the electronics store. I received a phone call by my dad (yes I had a phone when I was 9/10 it was funny) asking where we were. I told him and we met before heading back home. When dad parked under our building I was looking for my phone in my Hello Kitty bag (I still own it hehe). There I found a hair clip inside that wasn't mine but was the same I saw on one of the shelves. I figured out I must have knocked it into my bag as I answered the phone. I was so scared my mom would punish me I kept it a secret. I hid this hair clip somewhere. I'm still to this day afraid of confrontation, I think I would have cried in front of the cashier. I believe it's my mom that makes me feel that way. I was afraid of being punished so I never told her. Once she found this thing I lied telling her it was a thing my bestie gave me. She was known to have all the craziest things. I only told my parents two years ago and they were surprised why I didn't tell them earlier. I said I was afraid of getting punished or made fun of by my brother.

Call the police, show them all the texts proving that the mother just deliberately abandoned the children, and let Child Protective Services take over. Any mother who would pull a stunt like this deserves to lose custody of the children. Someone like this is the same type of person who, when the kids were a few years older, would simply leave them locked alone in the house, hopefully with food and water left out.

I was literally thinking "Call the CPS already" Oh also, my mom almost called the CPS for my niece (That lives in Colorado, we live in Washington) because her mom went to town for shopping and left a pie in the oven, along with her two small siblings (5 and 2), my niece had called mom to ask how to know the pie was ready. Mom then called my nieces mom and started talking to her. My neices mom tried to calm her saying that she would go back after she got done getting groceries and thats when mmom threatened her with calling the CPS, Neices mom hurried home at the thought mom had actually called the CPS. I would like to be able to return my items when there are no longer have any used to me or are broken and exchange them for the full value of the item purchased so I never have to spend actual money buying things I need anymore because I could just return what I don’t want need or what’s broke. That would surely leave me and anybody else who is allowed to do it on better financial terms, but I think we’ve all known that we’ve grown up in a society where you’re not allowed to return your dead Christmas tree over a week after Christmas for a full a refund. Psychologically, though, you really shouldn’t do that unless there’s no other option. It is easy to traumatize a child and having them on the sidelines during legal proceedings is already bad enough. Depending on how often they contact their son and the relationship between him and their mother, the grandparents honestly would’ve been the better choice at the time. Given how the sister behaves, his family and OP might call DCS on her together and the agency would likely give custody of the kids to them anyway provided they can care for them.

honestly the wedding dress story peeved me the most. I would of said i didnt hav money for the dress, and if they complained have returned the dress. They spent $1000-$2000 on that wedding! most brides dont ask for gifts from the ppl who paid for anything in their wedding, at most those same ppl will sometimes be very generous and offer some small money after.(unless theyre rich, then everyone hands out money like its going out of style.)
