I've seen Ali hurt and back away from a fight, and Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson...you name them. But not once have I ever seen Marciano hurt or back down. He was almost a freak of nature, as if pain and yielding were nothing to him. An absolutely incredible athlete.

@@Pedro_Le_Chef Joe Louis lost to Ezzard Charles friend. And Louis fought Jersey Joe twice and while he beat him one was a 15-round decision. the other he won by KO in the 11th round. You underestimate Marciano's ability to keep going forward regardless of the onslaught of punches coming his way. I think you are mistaken friend doing what many have done and regretted, underestimating Marciano's power, will and stamina. I think Joe Louis was a great HW. I rank him in the top 10 of all time. Rocky was undeterred. Punches didn't phase him. Even the two times he touched the canvas in his career via Walcott and Moore were flash knock-downs. He bounced right back to his feet and continued to fight. He was a relentless brawler with unparalleled stamina. He was a great champion with an unrelenting will to win as well as a gentleman who respected his opponents. A class act in and out of the ring. There'll never be another like him. RIP Champ.

A lot of Rocky's opponents describe how their arms were sore for weeks after a bout with him. Rocky would repeatedly hammer an opponent's arms to kill their efficiency. He was, for me, the ultimate fighting machine.

If Rocky was fighting today, it would probably be as a cruiser weight. He weighed less and had a shorter reach than almost all of his opponents. He fought both skilled boxers (LaStarza and Charles) and slugging heavy hitters (Layne, Mathews, and Moore). He experienced being cut, floored, and behind on points...and yet always found a way to win. He was always in great shape, had a huge desire to win, and could take hard punches.....and could hit hard....49-0, 43 kayos. He would never take a dive or quit in his corner or clown around...he was there to win. I don't know if he was the greatest, but he was a fine fighter.

I have tremendous respect for Joe, but he was beaten in this fight. I stay away from speculation and what "if." Joe was 37 and past his ideal physical age. He was heavier than Rocky and had a nine inch reach advantage. Joe was a smart boxer and quickly figured out his opponents. Rocky had his work cut out for him. It would have been interesting to see these two both in their prime, but Joe had a lot of experience to also assist him. Two great fighters fought this day and Marciano came out the victor that day, despite Joe being the favorite.

Joe Louis was the most powerful and fastest punching heavyweight boxer in ring history. His great hand speed, especially in combination, was awesome to behold. He had a powerful jab, threw every punch perfectly and with wasteless accuracy. His right cross, thrown short and straight, was sheer dynamite. The "Brown Bomber" never ducked anyone as his record 25 title defenses attests to. Of those 25 successful defenses, 21 were won by knockout, 17 of those were ten counts! 5 in the first round! He also knocked out six men who held the Heavyweight Championship of the World. From 1934 to 1949, when he first retired as champion, his record was 60-1 with 51 knockouts. He held the Heavyweight Championship for a record of nearly 12 years.

As for Louis taking a dive.... If I was looking to quit I wouldn't have dropped my arms and allowed a notorious thumper to punch me on the jaw. An excellent way to end up in the hospital. Louis was stunned by a left hook, dropped his hands and was nailed by a powerful right. Sugar Ray Robinson wrote in a book that he was at the fight and immediately ran to the ring to help his hurt old friend. There has never been any accusations, except by Christopher Miller and other Marciano haters, that Louis took a dive. When one examines today's welterweight ranking one finds that this division has been, basically, controlled by smaller men (Mayweather, Pacquio, Marquez, and Guerrero), who have built up their bodies to compete at this weight. Marciano did the exact opposite. He was a legitimate heavyweight who believed in intense/extreme endurance training. He was a laborer during his adult life so his strength came from hard living, never graduated from high school, if I remember correctly, so becoming a CEO of a corporation was not in his future. He chose boxing to escape poverty and a dead end life. I can only assume his fighting intensity derived from.

Marciano must have been incredibly strong for a man his size. He gave away 20 pounds and still manhandled Louis physically. Rocky had a simple plan: When Louis threw that long jab, Rocky would step inside, put his head on Joe's chest, and pound away. Louis needed space to throw his punches, Rocky didn't give him any. Joe was not nimble at this point; he could not stick and move, plus Louis did not do a good job of tying Rocky up. Joe needed to force Marciano's head down and separate his arms--he didn't do that and paid for it. Joe let Rocky put too much pressure on him.
@albanyorganics30302 жыл бұрын
Rocky threw the overhand right after the Louis jab or the leaping left, keeping Joe from following up with the right cross and stopping him from landing combinations, meanwhile taking hits right and left from the crowding Marciano. Unable to score anything but jabs the accumulation of punches wears down Louis for the middle round KO. Prime Louis has the same set of problems with the relentlessly advancing Rock. KO 12th round.

Two great champions, each great in different ways. Marciano was relatively short, light, with a very short reach and quite awkward in terms of conventional boxing skills. To compete at that level he had to be in incredibly superb condition and he had to maximize his power, which he did.
@MrBigden3710 жыл бұрын
Marciano fought what was there. Ezzard Charles and Walcott were no jokes. Look at his fights, always went hay-makers as long as he needed to go. Heavy power in both hands, extreme stamina, giant heart, and did what he needed to do when he needed it. Split nose, a bloody pulp and guess what he was there. Unless you knocked him out outright, or ran he'd be yours. Lewis never fought anyone like Marciano.

Louis fought against Rocky-like fighters 5 times, 4 of those ending in knockouts. He fought: Paulino Uzcudun Tony Galento Nathan Mann Arturo Godoy x2 All these guys were rated in the top 10 fighters of the year when Louis beat them. Conversely, Rocky never once fought a guy like Louis, a big heavyweight who had incredible power and youth. The best guys Rocky fought were over the hill, not big punchers and they still gave him his toughest fights. Prime Louis is simply a different animal. Rocky is going to come into him to slug it out and he's going to get outpunched, countered and battered before being knocked out. He doesn't have a single advantage over a 25 year old Joe Louis.

Joe Louis is probably the most important Heavyweight of all times. But he still said years next this fight that also at his prime he wouldn't know how to fight against Rocky. He didnt know how to fight against an infighter.
@Pedro_Le_Chef9 ай бұрын
"He didnt know how to fight against an infighter" Joe Louis is probably one of the best infighters in the heavyweight division. He knocked out fighters who fought like Rocky five times: Paulino Uzcudun Tony Galento Nathan Mann Arturo Godoy x2 Louis knew how to deal with a fighter like Rocky better than Rocky knew how to deal with a fighter like Louis. He is a complete shell of himself in this fight and he still lasted 8 rounds against prime Rocky and outboxed him for a few rounds. Even with his speed, reflexes, power and combinations long gone.

It's interesting how the video's narrator describes Louis at 30:00 as being heavier than he used to be. Louis is still just about big enough to be a heavyweight today, but if you look at him during the fight, weighing 212, he looks skinny compared to today's boxers. Rocky by contrast looks deceptively powerful, though much too small. He'll probably still knock a bunch of people out.

Big muscles and weight are often not a fight factor at this level
@Pedro_Le_Chef9 ай бұрын
Louis was 202 lbs in his previous fight and he ballooned up to 214 lbs to fight Rocky in a month I don't think it was a wise decision. His speed was already gone, adding extra weight that fast did him no favors.

This bout shows, at least to me, that if Liston had been world rated at the time Marciano was champ that Liston could have won. Joe was around 38 years old but looked more like 50 when he fought Marciano. Liston was a well trained boxer, standing about 1" or 1.5" shorter than Louis but had an 84" reach. Marciano admitted he had to eat Louis's jabs in order to get inside. A fresher, younger Liston would had been a tough nut to crack because of his excellent jab and reach advantage. Marciano's only chance of winning was to slide under Liston's jab and keep the fighting on the inside where his short arms would give Rocky the advantage. Both Liston and Marciano were powerful guys so pure strength would not be the deciding factor. I don't see Liston pushing Rocky aside like Foreman did with Frazier. I can't help but think that Liston would had busted up Marciano's face really bad. Liston was knocked out cold by Leotis Martin who was a known puncher but was only 6' tall and weighed less than 200 lbs. But this happened (1969) when Liston was at the tail end of his life. Liston also quit in his bouts against Ali because he couldn't hit Ali. He and Marciano would be doing a lot of hitting so I don't imagine Liston quitting in this bout.

Agree, Liston's jab would have cut Rocky up so bad that the fight would have been stopped.

Vincent Fisher I feel sorry for liston I know we make our own bed but when ever I saw liston I just saw that some where he had a soft side the public made him out to b be the bad champ I always liked liston but I think when you pick mob guys as friends that's what killed him he made a deal with the devil in jail very sad and the name was Frankie carbo they did time together and carbo liked liston I really think he could of beat Ali but when your doin unhealthy things and a gun pointed at you very sad

Marciano superior conditioning and relentless aggressiveness wins any fight beyond 12 rounds. Short arm reach is an advantage for inside fighting. Listons power offset by Marciano sidewinding crouch.

I don't disagree with anything you said. It just seems to me Louis and Marciano were very close in overall talent, with Joe being bigger, stronger, and older. I don't think Rocky could get inside on Joe without paying the price if Joe was the same age. As for crowding an opponent, Joe is well-known for the same thing. Great fighters have many of the same tendencies, don't they?

Marciano was only 5 10 with a 67 inch reach. wasn;t like he was gonna grow taller or grow longer reach. He would become wider. He was already slow at 184 , what do you think happens at 200 plus? He become even more slower and target.No way he fights effectively at 200 plus.

@Christopher Miller Louis was still good but had lost his reflexes, and steam. He was 30lbs heavier but a bit past his prime weight. Even pressure fighters Frazier such Godoy, and Galento, were able to frustrate a prime Louis.

Louis fought "pressure fighters" five times in his first career, and he knocked them all out. Rocky was problematic because Louis was old, simple as that.

+Italo D in my humble opinion, Mike Tyson and Rocky Marciano managed so many fights in a year because they finished the fight early in the rounds with a knock out victory... making them less injured, less exhausted. which proves them great fighters

+Italo D exactly what he said. ^ both finished fights rather quickly and ending fights wit one punch and barely taking any damage so depends on the fighter

I think whoever lives in the poorer economies, produces the greatest fighters. I think this is why before 1970, there were so many great fighters from different nationalities. After that it seemed to be mostly black and hispanic. Now it seems Russians have gotten into the mix.
