Max Schmeling must have been blessed with great genetics because when he finally retired from boxing in his early forties after tough fights with guys like Bear,Louis and Sharkey he had all his marbles and lived until he was 99 years old. Schmeling was also an intelligent man becoming very wealthy after owning several Coca Cola distributorships in Germany.

Interesting- how scientifically Schmeling fought Joe Louis in their first fight, while not being able to get out of the way of Baer's wild, telegraphed, looping punches. He just ate Baer's punches. Proof that different styles make for different fights.

When Baer wanted to, and he frequently did not, he was a real monster in the ring. His problem, other then poor technique at times, was that he really didn't want to put in all the hours to be the best he could be. He had a great life and a good career and he was happy with that.

@@alanberg5575 Some crazy slow person named Nycinstyle kept saying a video I deleted was wrong, and Ali said how great rock was and how he knew boxing well. That's correct since Ali, for a fact, knew no one made even midcard fighting like these novices in the 70s. And then the wacko said how Ali said rock was better than frazier when Ali was just being humble; anybody knows that with good vision, Joe was way more advanced. Yet Ford was in the same era and fought guys who had the same advances as others in the same era. He kept speaking on rock only instead of the other people in my video, as if all these guys didn't all have the same novice like tech and flaws; these people just are really crazy and slow. I have seen multiple odd comments saying to others's and myself how we don't know what we are looking at as if we are blind. The videos are grainy, yet people can clearly see the movements of these guys and have for years. Trainers say otherwise. Have we ever been in a match? Watch a breakdown of highlights. The oddest one of them all: if the video were recorded in higher quality and upgraded to 60 fps, it would show these fighters' advanced angles, tech, timing, and defence. Is that true? By upgrading the video to 60 fps and higher quality, it can magically alter them to be more advanced in those areas. Oh they said mutiple times the videos don't show these guy's as obsolete

A couple of facts: 1) Max Schmeling was no Nazi. He rescued two Jewish children by hiding them in his apartment. Also, he refused to comply with Hitler's direct demand that he fire his Jewish manager. 2) Max Baer was not Jewish. He was only 1/4 Jewish and had no interest in the Jewish religion. Baer had fought professionally for 4 years before he adorned his trunks with the Star of David. He wore the Star of David in the Schmeling fight to honor his father who was 1/2 - Jewish but also had no interest in religion. Baer wore the Star on his trunks in this fight and thereafter because it garnered him an enormous following in the Jewish community.

Baer was never boring that's for sure. He had dynamite in his right hand, but some of the punches he threw in this fight looked downright amateurish, but I understand he liked to have a little fun in the ring to break up the monotony, but if he stayed on his game he was downright deadly in there. He certainly had all the tools, reach, power, chin, strength, etc, and if he had utilized them a little better he would've been unbeatable.

First let me say that I'm a born and raised Southern boy from the USA. That said, Jethro Sr. was a dirty fighting son of a gun! I'm not a Nazi sympathizer. I'm not a Schmeling fan either. I've been an avid fan since the 60's and I always heard that Baer fought dirty but when you look at his life outside the ring, he seems to be a really nice guy. When the internet and sites like KZbin came along, we old guys were finally able to watch some of the great heavyweight fights. Every fight that I see of Max Baer's, he's holding and hitting, low blows, elbows all the time, rabbit punching...he couldn't have fought after the 60's and television because he would have had so many points deducted and disqualification that nobody would know him and the Beverly Hillbillys would not have had Jr. as Jethro. The way God planned it I suppose!

Ironic how both these fighters have been misrepresented in film and history: Schmeling as a goose-stepping Nazi, which he most certainly wasn't, and Baer as a man-killing caveman who enjoyed sending men to their maker, a la Ron Howard's film 'Cinderella Man'. Nether fighter regarded a stiff jab as a effective weapon! Both just flicking it out with out any harmful purpose! 3. vs a modern day fighter, say Tyson, very few punches in flurries! Very interesting to watch, neither fighter would hold up to fighters of today, I believe!
